Media Begins to Question Goodell and NFL Re: Vilma and Bountygate

It's apprently taken a week to finally settle in, but now the press (at least the newspapers) are starting to cover Jonathan Vilma's civll case against Roger Goodell over False Statements made regarding Vilma's alleged involvement in a 'Play to Injure' Scheme.

La Times: Was the penalty against Jonathan Vilma too severe?
The suspension of Jonathan Vilma was not too severe if in fact he offered $10,000 bounties to any teammate who took out Kurt Warner or Brett Favre. That’s clearly crossing the line. But the thing is, did he actually do that? That’s what the NFL needs to prove, or risk suspicion that the league rushed to judgment.

It’s time for the league to lay its cards on the table, reveal what specific evidence it has against the Saints, and put the matter to rest. The league was emphatic from the start that it had the Saints dead to rights, and the audiotape of Gregg Williams only bolstered that, but the NFL’s reluctance to provide further evidence only makes it look like it has something to hide. It’s time for the NFL to prove that it indeed has the goods.
Dan Pompei, Chicago Tribune Says:
Jonathan Vilma’s punishment is severe all right. Very severe. Whether or not it’s too severe is difficult to judge because the NFL has not gone public with the evidence it has against Vilma. Given what the public knows, it seems that a year-long suspension for following your bosses’ orders is pretty harsh. Unless Vilma truly was a ringleader in the Saints’ bounty program, and not just a stooge who was doing what he was told, he should not have been suspended for an entire year.

Vilma is adamant that he never paid a teammate to try to injure an opponent. The NFL is likely to have a different version of what happened in New Orleans, however. It is worth noting that Vilma’s suspension is longer than the suspensions of three teammates who also were accused of taking part in the bounty program.
Baltimore Sun: SHOW US THE EVIDENCE
If the evidence says Jonathan Vilma was putting up money for bounties, then the penalty is not too severe. We can't really say for certain he did because we haven't seen the evidence. All we have is NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's word. I find it hard to believe that Goodell would take away a whole season from a player if he didn't have the goods to back it up.

But until Goodell lets the world see the evidence, there is doubt. It will be interesting to see what happens with Vilma's defamation suit against Goodell. Maybe Vilma's attorneys will have some actual evidence to back up the Saints linebacker's claim that he was defamed.

But I believe the NFL is too careful and too calculating to hand down these suspensions without corroboration.
Sun Sentinal: 1 year is too harsh
Jonathan Vilma is one of the most intelligent and well-spoken athletes I've covered.

He has always been a stand-up person, which made the NFL's accusations that he's the ring leader of the Saints' bounty program a head-scratcher.

What wasn't a head-scratcher was Vilma's decision to file a defamation of character lawsuit against NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who suspended him for the entire season.

No matter the outcome of the unprecedented lawsuit against Goodell, it is clear Vilma is not sitting out this season without a fight. And if that's the case, he's taking the right approach. His suspension is harsh, and the claims made against him by the NFL —without showing substantial evidence —is troubling.

Goodell is either a liar or a fool

Goodell is either a liar or a fool. He has stated any and all info has already been released on ESPN (3:20):

Doogell - "We have been as transparent as possible here"... "we released all information that can be credibly presented"...

Well, if that's the case, then this is going to be a SLAM DUNK for Vilma!

Doogell - "We took action as quickly as we could..."

Seriously, it took god-ell 3 YEARS to act on this??

The excitement continues to build. Oh boy!!!! I feel like a little kid waiting on Santa.
All I want for Christmas is a post card from Vilma showing Roger hanging from a tree.

old RG better not have "destroyed" the evidence(like the N.E. spygate) or he could be in for a world of legal trouble

This is what Asylum Guido was saying the other day. And I kind of am starting to agree with it. I am beginning to suspect, that what we've been told about (but not shown) is simply ALL the flimsy evidence there is -- a "PS" comment in 1 or 2 unsolicited emails forwarded indirectly to Payton from Michael Ornstein (that Payton did not ask for or respond to); the one weird comment from Hargrove on the video; maybe some hearsay accusations from a disgruntled ex-Saints employee someplace; and all the vague, whiny complaints about the NFCCG, after the fact, from Brad Childress, the crybaby Vikings punter, the Vikings owner, etc.

I have been kinda digging in on this, trying to figure out WHEN and WHY the "bounty" investigation was reopened in "the latter half of the 2011 season." That's all they've said so far about it, that I'm aware of. Just that it was late in the 2011 season, they reopened the investigation for some reason.

And lately, I'm kinda looking at that '11 Vikings game again -- remember the 42–20 cloberration blowout we put on them? Brad Childress was gone as coach by then, but a lot of the Vikings players and coaches (Leslie Frazier) were the same guys who lost and whined about it after the NFC Championship game. I mean I really wonder about that '11 Vikings game now -- because do ya'll remember right after that game, AP complained in the media about how the Saints were twisting his ankle in the pile?

I think it's possible that the Vikes might have been the ones who went running to Goodell and complained AGAIN, like a spoiled kid who gets beat up and then runs to teacher, crying and telling his half-true version of what really happened. I mean notice how those Vikings players, they really do tend to pile on with this stuff in the media, bashing the Saints, it's like HMMMMM
