Knee and Thigh Pads Mandatory in 2013

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter

NFL makes it mandatory for players to wear knee and thigh pads starting in 2013

And the wussification of the NFL continues .....

lee909 05-22-2012 10:51 AM

How will a knee pad doing anything but stop a player getting turf burn.
It's not going to stop a ruptured ACL is it.

darstep 05-22-2012 11:21 AM

It will stop a bruise.
I wouldn't play without knee pads, or shin caps, or without my ankles wrapped.
If you've ever had raw bone to helmet on a cold day in December then you know what I'm talking about.
I always wondered why guys opted out of knee pads. They don't slow you down.
There is probably some fool that would play without a helmet.
Go for it.

saintfan 05-22-2012 11:23 AM

LMAO. The NFLs desperation continues...

Agreed, it has helped me more than once to avoid a bruised knee or thigh. Most importantly it will make kids watching think "oh they wear knee pads and thigh pads in the NFL so I should do that too". The first thing Mike Singeltary did when he came to the 49ers was to make Patrick Willis wear more pads wit the reasoning it would help him avoid small bumps and bruises that only serves to slow a player down.

A knee to the head hurts much less if that knee is padded.

foreverfan 05-22-2012 05:19 PM

What requirement is next... a cup?

Srgt. Hulka 05-22-2012 08:30 PM

That's gonna do a LOT to stop the concussions.

Tobias-Reiper 05-22-2012 08:47 PM

... and yet, helmet to helmet spearing from defensive player to RB is still legal. Go figure...

QBREES9 05-22-2012 11:18 PM

every little bit helps.

hagan714 05-23-2012 12:42 AM

stupid enough to play without either say's a lot about some players stupidity.

SloMotion 05-23-2012 05:40 AM

IDK if I'd consider mandatory knee pads/thigh pads as a step towards total wussification, it's not like, say, a specific rule change aimed at protecting one specific player on the field, eh?

I like seeing them having to wear the pads.

Over 2000 former players lawsuits, NFLPA grievences regarding suspensions, a defamation lawsuit....possibly more. Pads and bruises are a tertiary issue right now.

If RG wanted to bring it to the front he should have done this a while back. It's all a smokescreen. All these ongoing serious issues and the media is asking him about pads. What a joke.

TheOak 05-23-2012 07:40 AM

They need to go to mandatory Knee Braces for ALL except kickers, it will slow the game a little and protect knees.

What will be worn as the mandatory knee and thigh pad.

You can also make coffee with it.

Just give it time and Roger will have them wearing flags instead of pads

Retarded machismo, for some people it makes you tougher, more manly, and impresses others to not wear it. True for every sport. Childish logic at it's finest.

Well, of course, that makes headlines and video clips....I mean wait, the NFL is about safety and game integrity and would NEVER use violence to sell.....

...hmmm.. now that you mention Nike: given the NFL just switched to Nike Combat uniforms, and that Combat uniforms come standard with sewn-in thigh and knee pads, I wonder if the rule is cosmetic or sponsor driven.

You should look a little closer at the plays.

Proper tackling technique is for me to put my face mask between the RB's numbers. The head, the legs, the arms all move in any direction to throw a d-player off... The numbers change direction with the ball...

The RB's first move as I close in is to drop his shoulder pads and try to bull through me... This action puts his helmet coming directly for my helmet. At 6'+ not many defensive people are getting under Sproles... Rice...

My options are... aim lower for his crotch with my face mask... (not happenin). This would angle my facemask down and he would make contact with the crown of my helmet breaking my neck.

Let him run his helmet through my sternum. Again.... if you have ever had a pulling guard flank you... you know you do not want this either. I went to a smaller school where I played both sides of the ball... Ive broken ribs on people who didn't see me pulling.

UK_WhoDat 05-25-2012 08:55 AM

Oooooooooouch! He got hit, right between the pads.
