Corners vs Receivers

So we didn't draft a corner at all. Henderson was the better player they say.

That may be, but here is my question. Are they planning on addressing the CB position at all? Wouldn't it be easier to find a WR in free agency than it would a CB? I would think that as deep as many WRs went in the first two rounds, there will be more receivers cut June 1st than there will be corners.

we have enough CB\'s just because everyone wanted the Saints to bring in a big name and they didn\'t doesn\'t mean we need to... and yet there still maybe some trades or pick up along the way... they may even intend to sign Dale Carter again. Maybe, just maybe they need to add some presure on the qb...

Here\'s what Haslett had to say about the cornerback position. For what it\'s worth...

Q: Didn\'t you want to get a cornerback in the draft?

A: \"I said that before we traded for Jason Craft. Mickey and Rick did a nice job of recouping the fifth-round pick that we gave up for Craft. If you look at our cornerbacks, we have a veteran in Ashley Ambrose who played good football for us last year; Fred Thomas, and you see the quality player that he is because a lot of teams were after him in free agency; Fakhir Brown, played excellent for us, especially the last eight games; Keyuo Craver and we added Jason Craft. So we got five corners. Now there is no Champ Bailey, but there aren\'t many teams who have a Champ Bailey. I think they are five good football players. If I had to line up today with the five we have, I think we are pretty good.\"

Q: So it would be unlikely you could sign a free agent now that would beat out one of those guys?

A: \"I thought there were two really good corners on the draft board. Guys who could come in and you\'d think they could start for you. Then I thought there were two others who in the future could probably play for you and be OK. Then there was a clump of five or six who I wasn\'t sure could make our football team. They might, they might not. How much better are they then your fourth or fifth guy? So why give up a third-round pick for a guy who might not be as good as what we\'ve already got? But there were two really good corners out there.\"

The Saints defensive schemes do not depend on true shut down corners. They depend on disruption at the line of scrimmage, and QB pressure. It also depends on strong play from the safety positions. The cornerback position only has to be good, not great. Fred Thomas is better than average, and Jason Craft made quite a few interceptions for the jags before being injured and losing his job to Rashean Mathis. Coach Del Rio said he liked Mathis because he was bigger and taller. I think Craft will surprise some folks. With all of the talent we have up front and in the LB corp, we should be able to better implement our scheme and make the corners look really good. QB pressures equal bad throws, and bad throws equal interceptions. With Will Smith and Courtney Watson in the mix we should be stronger and faster. Rodney Leisle should be a pleasant surprise as a run stuffer.
