If Brees sits out in 2012, things get very interesting in 2013

Thumbs down If Brees sits out in 2012, things get very interesting in 2013

Recently, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported that, under the CBA, the NFLPA believes Saints quarterback Drew Brees will be entitled to a 44-percent raise in 2013, if the Saints use the franchise tag on him again. But Brees has available to him a much more potent tactic, if he’s willing to walk away from $16.371 million in 2012.

Article 10, Section 15(c) of the labor deal explains that, if Brees doesn’t play in 2012, he can be tendered as a franchise player once again in 2013. Though the language is a bit vague as to whether the franchise tender would equate to 120 percent of his 2011 salary or 120 percent of his 2012 tender (which is much higher), Section 15(c) contains a much more troubling provision, for the Saints. If Brees hold out for all of 2012, the Saints would be prevented from using the exclusive version of the franchise tag on Brees in 2013.

The key here is that Brees is a franchise player and if the Saints are stupid enough not to work out a deal now they are beyond stupid. A player like this comes around only once. No other franchise type quarterback will be willing to come here again because they will know that this organization will not take care of them. If anyone thinks we will be fine without Him and have that we will play with what we got mentality count on watching other teams in the playoffs like Atlanta and maybe even Carolina. Without Brees we will be last or next to last in our division. Brees will not sign the tag and I don't blame him. If they don't get this done the bad blood will destroy the relationship and the Saints oponents will be the happiest people in the NFL. They will all be praying to have the Saints on their scheldue.

I think the Saints have done an excellent job with player relations. See the recent move with Ivory for example, or for that matter the willingness to sign Drew the first time. The Saints have made Drew multiple respectable offers, and while I'm all for Drew holding out for every last dollar he can get until the deadline, I don't see the Saints as 'bad guys' in this deal. I don't see how anybody could.

At some point Drew and his agent have to be held accountable too.

I just absolutely cannot see him sit out an entire season, he's just too big of a competitor to do that, and it would only hurt his future prospects since he'd be seen as unreasonable by majority of the FOs around the league.

Maybe if he sits out he can work behind the counter at his Jimmy Johns store and call the shots from back there.

He may be a competitor Fin, but he's a union man first. I know a lot of you guys on here are union members, and I'm not trying to piss anybody off, but Drew is 100% union. If he feels he is not getting what he thinks he deserves, he will sit. Plain and simple. He will not sign that tag, and if no deal is struck he will sit.

As far as other front offices, we just saw a frikkin multi-million dollar auction for an old, injured, Peyton Manning, and man who, with just one hit, could spend the rest of his life paralized. You know there will be offers from many teams next year if Drew becomes free to intertain them.

It's not just the sitting out. the loss of endorsements, his non profit loses visability, his status in the HOF take a hit...all for what? A few million dollars. He'd lose that much in endorsements alone.

Brees is a great player and team player but at the end of the day his loyalty is to himself and his family. Loomis's loyalty is to the Saints organization. I know it's hard to see but Loomis is doing the right thing. He's made reasonable offers to Brees. What else is he supose to do? The team would become totally lopsided. Manning understood this which is why I don't get why Brees doesn't.

I opened the closet the other day that contains my Game Jerseys, three of them with a number 9 on them...

The scent that came out of that closet was... well, it was TAINTED.

WTF is going on with this world? 2012 MUST be the end! Damn Mayans!
