Interceptions... 2012

Who in all of sam hill is going to start making them. Seems like Sharper left and the interceptions went with him. Who do we have that shows promise in this area?

Now instead of interceptions we get burnt.

Interceptions were a key part of our success in 2009, even down to winning the Super Bowl. Porters 4th qtr interception took every oz. of fire out of the Colts and Manning.

Interceptions the last two seasons have been at an all time low. With our explosive and prolific offense, we could continue to get burnt both my the run and pass and easily go 16-0 if we picked up our interception rate.

An interception in my eyes with our lethal offense is a 14 point swing, or at least with a FG a 10 point swing. That being said just one interception in the Packers/Buckaneers/Rams games last season and we are 16-0... It would have also swung the 49ers game in the playoffs.

I went back 11 years
2011 - 28th in league 9ttl 13-3
2010 - 32nd in league 9ttl 11-5
2009 - 2nd in league 26ttl 13-3
2008 - 11th in league 15ttl 8-8
2007 - 28th in league 13ttl 7-9
2006 - 28th in league 11ttl 10-6
2005 - 26th in league 10ttl 3-13
2004 - 24th in league 13ttl 8-8
2003 - 20th in league 14ttl 8-8
2002 - 7th in league 20ttl 9-7
2001 - 20th in league 15ttl 7-9

This HAS to be a better conversation than contracts/suspensions

Hoping some of these new guys may be a playmaker that is what we do not have. Not sure that anyone can teach Harper to catch a ball so we need to get someone else there. He has to be a situation type player. We have one good corner that can catch. What I am hoping is that Spags new type defense will slow it down for some of our players and put them in better position to make those plays. Constantly saw our guys out of position or totally fooled. Teams caught on to William's sell out defense and learned how to beat it.

It is sort of difficult to intercept pass from behind the line of scrimmage in a blitz

Good riddance GW

Simple, a collected effort. Jenkins can catch them when he can roam and make plays..... Which your not able to do when there's no pressure. Greer would be my first choice...... Johnny Patrick is probably going to be my favorite corner if he can stay healthy.... big things on ints this season for me.

We haven't had a solid pass rush in that same time span either. I think GW's 1st year we applied good pressure, but before and after that, not so much.

Greer is going to grab several and then teams will throw away from him. That's when I expect Robinson to get hold of a bunch of balls. Later in the season I could see where our FS could have a field day like Sharper used to. I just don't know if Jenkins is that guy. A lot of entrenched positions may shake out differently after camp starts.

I think i have it sorted.

Greggs first year was a transition year, and our Defense was still doing things Gibbs way..

Then when Greggs way took over interceptions were put on the back burner.

I chuckled after I wrote that....

Speaking of interceptions...

Drew threw 11 in 2006, advanced to NFCCG
Drew threw 18 in 2007, missed playoffs
Drew threw 17 in 2008, missed playoffs
Drew threw 11 in 2009, won the Superbowl
Drew threw 22 in 2010, eliminated in round 1
Drew threw 14 in 2011, eliminated in round 2

Yup.

I am hanging my hat on that "intangible" statistic of, it seems to me like defenses do noticeably better in the first year of a new coordinator, not just Saints and interceptions, but also it happens in other places with other teams and other stats. I am hoping we can get some interceptions and some other improvements out of our guys, caused by confusion and opposing teams not knowing what to expect. Also don't underestimate the fact that a new defensive coordinator, means all the guys on D will be playing to impress the new coaches, for keeping their starting job security, plus there will be more competitive pressure from backup guys playing hard and sensing an opportunity to break into the regular rotation. Nobody is safe at any position when a new coach comes in and brings in new players. Even veteran guys will be busting their rumps in training camp, from the opening snap.
