Sources: Union seeking tag clarity

1 Attachment(s)
The NFL Players Association asked an arbitrator Tuesday to determine whether New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been hit with the franchise tag for a second time, according to sources.

The Saints placed their exclusive rights tag on Brees earlier this offseason and Brees' first team, the San Diego Chargers, placed the tag on Brees in 2005 after his rookie contract expired.

The sources said the union is seeking a decision and/or clarification regarding the league's policy that stipulates a second franchise tag is a 120 percent bump from the first tag and the third time is 144 percent.

Brees' current tag is worth $16.371 million. According to ESPN.com senior NFL writer John Clayton, a 144 percent bump would put Brees' cap number at $23,574,240, though an exclusive tag could raise the number a little higher. That would put his two-year earnings at $39,945,240, a little less than $20 million a year.

Works for me.

Halo 05-30-2012 10:58 AM

I thought all this was going to get taken care of ASAP according to Loomis and Benson.

People are already getting antsy and I'm one of them.

If they're going to let him go, let him go and let him sign somewhere else. Why drag this out. He's obviously not going to just play for us this season under the tag.

lynwood 05-30-2012 11:46 AM

I would hope that any player that doesn't play under the Tag which is part of the rules everyone signed up for gets hit with a 144% penalty.

TheOak 05-30-2012 11:58 AM

Brees is an RFA... Restricted... They do not have to let him go, then can let him sit out.... Whats better if an agreement can not be made? Let him sit out a season, or face him in the playoffs?

In 2013 they can try to FT him again.... I am going to spitball here but his love for New Orleans may have dissipated by then if "they" keep playing games...

By games I mean the same games "they" are playing with us:
"we are close"
"a deal will be done"
"we are confident"
....yada yada yada

And this is EXACTLY why I am a fan of the Saints and not of any one player... Players come and go.
if they are not preforming or being reasonable about contracts... Bye bye

JimmyB1775 05-30-2012 12:44 PM

You said it, Terminator. Reasonable. What's the best contract in the league for a QB now? Is it $19mil? And they're asking $23? That's pushing it a bit.

I know the answer already, but if he was a UFA looking for $23mil, would teams give it to him? All those looking for Manning would, but would any team pay their guy that much if they were looking to resign? Is Green Bay going to give Rodgers 25? Because if Brees gets 23, Rodgers is going to ask for 25. I guarantee it.

Rogers cant justify it.. he is not as good, his numbers are not as good...etc...

All I have found is that it is speculated that Brees wants 21m

JimmyB1775 05-30-2012 02:43 PM

Rogers relation to Brees has EVERYTHING to do with one superbowl and one MVP title. Maybe the incredible @$$ kissing the media has given Rogers. But Brees deserves 20. Rogers will get more.

And I could swear the number was 23?

Ashley 05-30-2012 02:52 PM

:puke: I'm so damn tired of this. This is more of a headache than the bounty BS

I am going to go ahead and stand by my original statement. Rodgers can not honestly justify being paid more than Brees. Remember another thing, the packers are a publicly held Franchise.. not sure how much that weighs in on how much they can throw at one player.

And if you look at a few of them, breaking 4000 this season makes him no longer tied for those record he becomes the sole owner of the record.

IMHO Brees is a man amongst boys at the NFL QB position.

Yes he is, but I don't believe he is worth 23 a year. Let me say that again 23 million. $23 a year??? But maybe he is, he could buy 9 Bugatti Veyron Super Sports Cars. to fit in his garage.
I'm just trying to make light of this crap,

or look at this, behind the number 23= Today, in the Obama economy, twenty-three million Americans are out of work, underemployed, or have stopped looking for work.
Do you think he will want all of his in Black And Gold ??

Oh yeah did we mention, this is what $23 MILLION looks like in Drew closet.

I literally read every single record you listed. On my iPhone. My eyes hurt now. You think reading that, Brees is 10 feet tall.

And that is the absolute beauty of it!

Drew is like the bumblebee or the English bulldog... Not supposed to be able to do what the do... The bumblebee is a freak of nature and should not be able to fly, the English Bulldog nearly all are born by C-Section and nearly 75% have to be artificially inseminated, they cant breed on their own very well.

Drew plays like he is 10 feet tall, but in reality he should not be able to even see over the line of scrimmage.

It's staring to look more and more like Brees will have some MAJOR fence-mending work to do upon his return if this holdout becomes even more protracted.
