I think we should. Howard wants over $6 million a year, while Smith would be making under $2 million a year. If we get rid of Howards cap number that'll be enough to sign the corner to a long-term deal, and we'll have some left over to put towards signing a LB like Trotter after the Skins cut him.

Thoughts?

I don\'t like the idea of trading Howard but if the price is right I might just trade him. I would prefer a 1st and 2nd rd. pick of 2005 than any corner out there.

Ummmm it won\'t be as much as you think because the Saints FO are still responsible for his prorated signing bonus. I also wouldn\'t like losing him as a player, but I wouldn\'t want another malcontent here. I don\'t think Law is a possibilty, but I like the idea of Woodson, McKenzie or Smoot.

What signing bonus? We franchised him!!! When you franchise a player they get the average of the top 5 players of their position for the next season. It is usually used to keep a player from being a FA so the team can sign him long-term during the offseason. But many times a team will just slap it on a player to retain them for one more year. Half the time, though, a team will do it to keep them from becoming FA\'s so they can trade the player, so they can get something out of losing him.

Trading Howard would do nothing but negate the players salary for the next year b/c there IS NO signing bonus whatsoever involved in a Franchise tag.

Hold ma drink, I\'m Rick James!!!

Oh yeah....had a brain fart....well that makes a trade scenario favorable to the Saints, but also unlikely.

... and if Baby Jesus cries, Darren will have to make you eat one of the walnuts he\'s crushing with his butt-cheeks.

Howard won\'t be traded... and nor should we trade him. Smith may not being playing DE for the Saints... he could end up at a LB position.

If nothing else gives us fresh players to rotate in and out for a break if need be.
