Frustration boils over at Saints practice as fight breaks out

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints have endured a frustrating offseason for obvious reasons. The offense -- missing its quarterback and head coach -- had a particularly rough Wednesday morning.

Backup quarterback Chase Daniel was repeatedly picked off and his passes kept getting broken up. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that linebacker Curtis Lofton touched Daniel after one play, which touched off a fracas.

Daniel threw the ball at Lofton, someone yelled "stay off the quarterback!" and pushing and shoving commenced.

Practice fights are a rite of summer. Fights usually pick up in volume in training camp, when the hitting truly starts and the players are more ornery. But the Saints have plenty to be ornery about now so they got started early.

Rapoport tells us the fighting lasted a minute before everyone got back to work. Meanwhile, Drew Brees was somewhere filming a NyQuil ad.

Daniels isn't looking good. Hmmm......
What should we do about that?
EDIT: What are we going to do about that?

|Mitch| 06-06-2012 02:51 PM

Spag must have taken the training wheels off the defense, looks like they turned it up a notch

SaintsRule11 06-06-2012 03:40 PM

Dear Mickey Loomis,

stop being cheap, you know damn well the Saints are nothing without Brees. Just get the damn deal done! Now!

NuNu318 06-06-2012 03:42 PM

Naw Chase had a flashback remembering how hard Lofton hit him in college when they played each other, flipped out for a second and his teammates on O came to his rescue cuz lets face it....Chase has no chance of taking Lofton in a fight. LOL. Its just a camp scuffle....least it wasn't on a suckerpunch level after the fact like Steve Smith or that guy from the Lions recently. It happens all the time...I found it funny & telling tho afterward when the media was in the locker room one of the reporters asked Malcom Jenkins if they ever got into like that with Drew. He said no nobody would touch Drew because Drew is our HOPE & DREAMS. LMAO.

ScottF 06-06-2012 03:55 PM

interceptions? this seems like good news. Good job, D

foreverfan 06-06-2012 04:24 PM

Time to break out the socks and quarters yet?

UK_WhoDat 06-06-2012 04:41 PM

Funky.

More!

dizzle88 06-06-2012 04:56 PM

You mean our defense has actually learnt to catch interceptions when they are available? That's shocking in its self lol

Spags is going to be awesome for our D

Another article on the matter.

LB Curtis Lofton, QB Chase Daniel instigate mini-fracas at Saints minicamp

METAIRIE, La. – Saints linebacker Curtis Lofton came through the offensive line untouched, sights set cleanly on quarterback Chase Daniel on Wednesday during New Orleans’ morning minicamp practice.

But Daniel, seeing no outs, all but gave up on the play and held onto the ball.

Lofton, however, expected a pass so he jumped up, coming down close enough to Daniel to brush the quarterback.

Seconds later, the first scrum of minicamp ensued.

“Quarterbacks, they’re a little touchy when it comes to stuff like that,” Lofton said. “I was walking away and he gave me the look and I was like, ‘He better not do that.’ He threw the ball but it bounced and it hit me and I had to have words after that.”

Milliseconds later, Pro Bowl right guard Jahri Evans came to Daniel’s defense and a more than minute-long fight broke out, one that ended with the quarterback back at the huddle and tight end Jimmy Graham on the bottom of the pile.

“Sooner or later, it was like 30 people,” said Daniel, the team’s No. 1 quarterback right now. “I just said, ‘Hey, I’m out of here. I’m going back to the huddle to get ready for the next play.”

Lovin it!!!

Speedy Ron 06-06-2012 07:25 PM

"Stay off the quarterback"??!?!?!?! Did he seriously say that? Man does that sound sissyfied. you cant go into battle with a whining qb. just lost alot of respect for CD. I bet he throws the remote down when playing xbox and yells that the game is cheating. no one likes playing with those guys. I wonder what the rest of the team was thinking when he cried out to stay off the qb

4everSaint 06-06-2012 07:33 PM

It said "someone" yelled, "Stay off the quarterback."

Really? Our #1 QB getting knocked around at the beginning of June is okay?

Couldn't remember his name.

Well this might be a common thing in general, but the quarterback shouldn't be instigating it. He's in a position of leadership until Drew comes back, and this is not how you endear yourself to your teammates and fans. Very poor showing, Chase.

"knocked down" was nowhere even close to being shown in the article...

"#1 qb"...please...you can't be serious.

He's #1 until Drew signs and if what I read was true Chase getting mad because Lofton contacted him at the end of the play; I'd hate to see our acting #1 catch a freak injury in "mini-camp" when they're still without pads on...

Oh and "knocked down" has not the same meaning as "knocked around"...

This pussey behavior is exactly why I don't want Chase as our QB. He is a little *****.

I'm starting to believe that even if Loomis gets very close it will not be enough.

sharke 06-06-2012 10:26 PM

This makes me like Curtis Lofton even more.

alleycat_126 06-06-2012 10:28 PM

Just means our D is gonna be able to get into some teams heads. Good to hear. See how effective they are when Drew is signed...

QBREES9 06-07-2012 12:05 AM

Good deal get Drew in here.

dizzle88 06-07-2012 04:05 AM

The reason they yelled stay off the quarterback wasn't to protect him, if the team gets found doing contact at this point they lose practices

It happened to the seahawks yesterday, they did contact in training and goodell docked two days of practice from them

Thank you for being intelligent, and not looking for something ridiculous to complain about in every little tiny thing that happens. Practices are being filmed, so if there's contact, the league will find out about it. That "someone" who yelled it could easily have been a coach who knew exactly what he was doing.

Totally understand that but as i interpreted it....the way he "touched" Chase wasn't even that serious more like he was probably going full speed brushed him a little hard and Chase took offense. It wasn't like they were out there with pads, and running true regular season contact drills (which is what Seattle was doing I think) and actually tried to tackle him. But I do agree they need to be careful even tho this was just something silly really the practices are being taped and the NFL will use any and everything to try and put more sanctions on the team.

Or real bad news with the quality of throws from our current starting QB.

Supertek 06-07-2012 01:40 PM

Just frustration can't read to much in something like this. Not very smart though. And some (few) people here think Chase could actually take this team somewhere.

SaintsBro 06-07-2012 01:41 PM

I tell ya it's disgraceful, the kid is a bum. And Brees has never ever thrown an interception in training camp. *shrugs *

Both give me a spark of hope. Last year I can't remember a true spark out of the D all year. And as for Daniels, maybe the competitor is starting to come out, if he is going to be our #1 one day he needs to show it, now, not later, hopefully he don't want to be #2 all his life.

If anybody on D on my team so much as touches our QB you can bet I am there kicking their asses. There is NO REASON to touch the QB in practise, EVER, if he is passing.
