Saints QB Chase Daniel reflects on the time that LB Curtis Lofton destroyed him in college…

Earlier in the week, Saints teammates QB Chase Daniel and LB Curtis Lofton tried to fight each other during practice. It was an interesting and brief altercation … but it wasn’t the first time those two had been jawing on the field.

Almost comically, Daniel and Lofton were fierce Big 12 rivals, and they’ve definitely gotten a little chippy with each other. Daniel was Mizzou’s star QB, and Lofton was Oklahoma’s star LB. Now, considering they’re on the same team, it’s a funny coincidence. Back then, it wasn’t. No, they were serious.

Ask Daniel about his history with Lofton, and one memory stands out. It was in the 2007 Big 12 Championship Game.

“I remember everything about that play,” Lofton bragged. “I even got a picture hanging up at my house.”

Awesome. Well, let Daniel tell it.

“Oh, you know what?” Daniel said. “Funny thing about it. He was literally the hardest hit I’ve ever had in college. It was in the 2007 Big 12 Championship game and we were running speed option right. And he came through unblocked and just leveled me. I’ll always remember that.”

This is the clip right here (at the 3:15 mark). It’s a classic. While last week’s scuffle wasn’t entirely funny, Lofton had a blast recalling his past hit on Daniel. Did he ever …

“It was a spread-out set, had the back spread out to the left,” Lofton recalled. “We knew they liked to option and we had in the game plan. The QB read off the option defensive end. So, we sent out defensive end to the pitch man and (Daniel) was thinking it was open. So, I was responsible for him and as soon as he turned up, I was right there. I mean, scott free, dead speed… BOOM. Gave it to him, Got up, Ahhhhh (flexes) And then, I also got him on a sack, too. We had words then, too. I actually got a picture of me and Chase face-to-face, too.”

That’s the one in this post. Anyway, Lofton wasn’t done showboating.

“I intercepted him, too, in the same game,” said Lofton, who then described the game. “Yeah, it wasn’t close. … Oh, me and Chase got a great history.”

And it’s all pretty entertaining.

Hopefully Lofton has enough class to not constantly bring it up

... really, and hopefully they both realize they're on the same team now? Go down to the French Quarter, have a beer/share a hooker or do whatever it is you have to do to put this in the past ... Saints don't need this kind of distraction at the moment.

Yep, sometimes I pick fights with my buddies just so we can share a hooker afterward!

Hopefully Chase realizes that the Saints can do without him more than without Lofton.

If Brees hold out, I think Luke McCown can beat out Daniel for the starting position; at least he has a little more real-time experience.

Vilma would not talk like that.

3:15 mark

For what its worth, I like Lofton's personality. He is cerebral, and he knows what the game of football is about. Maybe if Daniel were reminded more of the past he would have a better future.

I love this guy! You have to expect some smack talk when a player spends years hating a conference rival and then ends on on that other team.

That was an OK hit, nothing spectacular though. That happens 10-15 times per game in the SEC.

I sure hope that the Atlanta mentality doesn't come with him and creep into the locker room.
