So does Drew sign a contract or sign the tag?

What do you guys think?

Easy. Contract.

Long term deal will be made as soon as the arbirtrator decides on the franchise tag on Brees if it would be applied next year. Does the one in San Deigo count as one towards his status or is it just the Saints tag that counts. The difference between what could be 120% or 144% of salary to be figured in is the last speed bump. Any leaks or hint at which way the arbirtrator is leaning the other side should jump for a deal. I believe the hearing is at the end of June.

This makes sense, so we can stop the daily threads until then.

Good point BD. I still believe long term, sitting out could be a smart move financially. Let's say he plays for a big market team like Dallas and gets them a SB. The endorsements, larger pool of donators to his foundation which he pockets 80%...and of course a bigger contract. It could seriously be a smart move. I'm just playing devil's advocate here, I want him to stay and believe he will. I think he has really grown attached to the city and I think he would rather take the sure deal for his family.

I think Drew is not interested in a franchise tag or 1 year extension. I think the Saints want this situation to be locked down and over with.

Unfortunately, BIG CONTRACTS like this take time to negotiate. How many "franchise" players have ever been happy with contract negotiations? How many general NFL players like or enjoy contract negotiations, ever?

NONE. These are knock down, grind out fights with legalese written all over them.

I believe Drew will be in training camp with his contract but the timing is utterly unpredictable because only 4 people know what's going on in day to day discussions - Brees, Loomis, Condon, and Benson.

I think the reporter who reported a deal would be made with Brees last week misunderstood what the Saints were saying: "a response offer is NOT a "deal" or signing of a contract. But her intentions were good.

I think the reporter heard a contract had been offered and purely speculated the time frame in which he would sign. This is shoddy journalism at best and he should be held accountable.

I'm in the camp of those expecting a deal by July 15th (deadline for franchise players to sign long-term). Like a union contract signing, you can expect endless rhetoric & sabre-rattling until then.

TheOak 06-13-2012 12:14 PM

Drew will play this out till June 15th for the following reasons:

1. He will not sign anything until there is a ruling on the "third franchise tag" issue. He was part of the CBA committee and knows that will effect future players. (This is even if he has the contract he wants sitting in front of him with a pen in hand)

2. I believe he is truly a "team guy", but still wants all he can get.... He is going to hold out until the last minute to make sure the other 52 men are on board and ready to go. I believe if at the last minute there is a salary cap issue he will concede a little to make everything work out for the team.

3. With all of the afore mentioned items off the table, Drew is still very intelligent and understands business... You never rush a business deal.

I agree with Halo and x626xBlack.
I don't want to know or read anything, rumors of singing, until he signs. I have heard enough reports on NFL Net in the mornings and yahoo. sports reports about him signing today and today and so on.

NuNu318 06-13-2012 03:10 PM

Hearing is set of for June 27th. If it goes in our favor (meaning this is his 1st tag with this team) then I see him signing the most recent offer he recieved (give or take some tweaks or concessions on either party's behalf) within 10days of the ruling. If it goes Brees' way....expect some cuts/restructures and he signs July 15th.
