Mortenson on Saints pick

Robert BSLMS>: Hello Mr Mort ! First of all the saints passed on drafting a CB for the second year in a row, an area they really needed to add some depth,But beings that should they not try to go after a free agent like maybe Mckenzie from GB and they picked up another speedy reciever so should it not be hard for other teams to match up with the saints speedy reciever cor? or should they try to get Brooks some compatition say like maybe trying for Kurt Warner from SL Rams?

Mort: Will Smith was just great value. I know the Patriots were trying to trade up to get him whent hey saw him falling. And the best friend of any secondary is a domiant defensive front, which the Saints are building. There was no corner after Hall and Robinson projected to go in the top 20. McKenzie from GB is not a free agent. He's a disgruntled guy wanting a new contract. They could try to trade for him.

Try and convince the naysayers of that. I swear some people just like to complain.

Another point I\'ve been waiting for someone to make. Who were the Saints supposed to Draft at 18? We get the best player available and people start beetchin\'. If we\'d taken Gamble (a reach in my opinion) then they\'d beetch and claimin it was a reach. WTF did these people want the Saints to do...crap themselves a CB at 18.

What\'s goin\' on with that Mickey Mouse Operation up there in Green Bay? A player wants out? The coach, GM, AND the owner must all suck coffee beans.

Last time I checked, the city of Green Bay owns the Packers (seriously...) so I guess the whole city must suck coffee beans.

I know huh....maybe ol Tom Benson should divide a portion of the Saints and make it available to shareholders too. They wouldn\'t want me as a .05 percent owner. ;)

this is the city of new orleans were livin in saintfan..thats all people know how to dois friggin complain!!we have grown over the years to pick at every thing the team does cause were so used to it..we have to put the blame on someone somewhere or else things just dont feel normal..i happen to like what were dong now..from the looks of things..our defense WILL be way more improved than last year AND with plenty of depth..and with the offense staying the same(and the addition of henderson)i think we will be a contender this year

The complaint wasn\'t that we should take Gamble at 18, it was that we should have traded down, got extra picks and taken Gamble. While I disagree that this would have been the best move, I think you guys should get your opponents view right before you make fun of them.

Actaully, JKool, the complaint I see most often is that we didn\'t trade up. People have even posted as recently as today to that end -- they also post that we didn\'t trade up as if we didn\'t even make an effort to do so. Well, we did make an effort, and there are lots of articles floating around indicating that we DID attempt to trade up but couldn\'t find any takers. Do I really need to post a link? :casstet:

My opinion -- as well as others -- is that the Saints did pretty good considering where they were, who the available players were, and the fact that they were unable to move up. The simple fact is those that are saying we didn\'t try are (a) not doing much research and (b) would likely have something to complain about regardless of WHAT the Saints did last weekend. It\'s the nature of the pessimistic beast you see?

That\'ll just give Whodat and Gatorman more people to blame. ;)

your right......the links are there.....i don\'t even wanna know what they offered to move up to 11 had it worked out...... denver moved up very early which coulda came back and bitem in the a##, however, they got what they, and us, wanted......i think the saints were a little cautious this yr after trading up last yr and not seeing what they wanted right away, but they were willing to risk it again......it was just not meant to be.....in all fairness, you would have to say that most teams were not prepared for the draft as in the willingness to give up the farm for the player they wanted, not just the saints.....
after reading the patriots tried to move and take smith, you have to wonder just how tough some teams were hanging not to trade....
i mean, the patriots did have many picks, did they not?
only 2 teams gave up a lot to get their player.
let\'s sign the draftees, see what\'s left with cap and move on.....
the wheeling and dealing is far from over.
i like the cautious approach this yr. i like the depth we\'ve added. other than almost 40yrs of waiting, at least i\'m still here unlike many who have gone before me, hoping and waiting....
we are improving....
now, let me go on the record now and say, i don\'t see the redskins going any better than 8-8 this yr.
i\'m glad the saints did not come out with guns blazing like they did.
the skins are trying to buy a superbowl, and those days are gone.......

Poor, poor Saintfan. The Saints draft was average, and I\'m sure that you\'re incredibly happy to see all the sportswriters chalking that up to BAD LUCK of all things. LOL.

I don\'t think we necessarily made terrible moves given what was thrown our way in the draft. That\'s not my problem. My problem is that we did not address areas of need BEFORE the draft. It\'s no big surprise that the draft is a little bit of a crap shoot. Holes should have been filled in free agency Saintfan. You know it. You know they weren\'t addressed properly last year. You know that they weren\'t addressed properly this year. You know that last year\'s draft didn\'t affect the team much. This year\'s very well may not either.

Let me give you one example - Tebucky Jones. In my eyes, T Jones was a bust as a FA pickup. His fundamentals are terrible and he was not the impact safety that the Saints thought they were getting. It seems they overpaid for him. Even with all that, he was still more important to the team in year one than ANY player we drafted last season. He will probably make more of an impact THIS season too. We never should have been looking to fill holes in the draft to begin with. Especially when we had the third most money available in FA and only a few positions to upgrade.
