Was Duncan in the room?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; He's been awfully anti-saints lately. If he was in the room, it confirms my suspicion that he's trying to move to a larger outlet. Maybe fox?...

Duncan has, all along, gone with whatever the NY media say.
Totally agree with your premise.

I don't think he was in the room. He is definitely burnt out on his job and needs to move on.

My theory on Duncan is that from the very beginning he has been consistently parroting back the league's version of events on everything, not asking any questions, and being condescendingly arrogant to Saints fans, for one reason only. Well two reasons. One, because the Super Bowl is being held in New Orleans this year, and he wants/needs to get himself press credentials to the big game -- a free ticket, laminate pass, parties in the suites, interview access, media day, access to warmups, after parties, etc. Bountygate threatens his free ride on the gravy train. If he writes a bunch of stuff that rocks the boat, or asks for the truth, he risks not getting his precious laminated press pass and the big fancy envelope of media credentials from Goodell and the league. It's a classic big fish/small pond type mentality, and very New Orleans. It's the only explanation I've found, that makes his taking the league's side on everything, make sense.

The other reason #2 why Jeff Duncan is being a jerk is because, he clearly doesn't like Mickey Loomis and Coach Payton. Which is kind of pathetic and sad. I think Coach Payton probably senses which reporters have a clue about football, from sitting at the podium and talking to them and taking questions each week, and Duncan is bothered because Payton doesn't "like" him and sorta blows him off... A lot of the smug, cocky, devilish, "arrogant" Sean Payton persona, that we fans love so much, is not really arrogance, it is just him reacting to sorta stupid questions, from goofball local press people like Kenny Wilkerson, and Jeff Duncan etc. Our press corps is really small market and amateur here, and Payton knows it.

So Duncan beats this "Sean Payton is arrogant towards the media" drum every chance he gets and it just isn't supported by facts. If you watch Sean Payton with the national media, or with veteran reporters, or with television reporters who have played the game themselves, he is actually very respectful and very cordial. He's been in New York, Philly and Dallas, so he knows all about the typical overblown, self important, small-fish local media types like Jeff Duncan, and how to work around them.

Exactly!! People have to realize that Payton was taught by The Big Tuna himself. Everyone knows how he felt about dumb questions by media...Its known that he only really trusted one media member and gave behind the scenes, exclusive info to...and that was Peter King. I saw an interview where this was mentioned and Peter King said that most of the stuff Parcells would talk to him about was off the record. Payton just took that type of mentality with him. Payton probably trusts only 2-3 people in the NATIONAL media rather than local.

Duncan hates Payton because he isn't one of those few national guys and feels like he's getting slighted in Press Confrences when Payton talks to the national guys and gives them more access than him. Sports Journalists are some of the most vindictive people on the planet IMO. You can read just about any sports writer's work and tell (if you know how to read between the lines) that he might have an agenda against a player, team, or coach. Duncan has always had that underlying resentment towards Payton in his posts for a few years.....this was just the perfect opportunity for him to be blatant with it.

Its ashame when someone local, who are the ones that are SUPPOSED to be breaking this stuff first, is so blatantly biased. I mean the guy pretty much called the entire Saints fanbase a bunch of ignorant morons in one of his columns. Everyone over at TP keeps saying they have no agenda and they are being objective but it is clear that at least one of them is not. If anything the ones that have been most objective is Tripplett and Varney. Varney is the one thats actually going to all the hearings and interviewing the players.

Duncan better hope he gets put on somewhere because his columns on the Saints the season will be worthless cuz I doubt they'll let him back in the facility.
