I still have a feeling Drew won't get a long time contract

Something is up, I can smell it. There is too much smoke around this contract thing. Im hoping I am wrong but I don't see a long time contract in Brees future.

Just stop it already!

QBREES9 06-29-2012 10:51 PM

Oh My God ! please.

thefifthwall 06-29-2012 10:54 PM

Look at it this way. Benson is a business man first. The return on a 100 million dollar investment in Drew is greater than the return on his investment in the Hornets. Drew will be signed and on time.

alleycat_126 06-29-2012 10:57 PM

The worry is starting to crowd the room, they have offered him three different deals now in order to make him the highest paid player. He will get his money!!!

QBREES9 06-29-2012 10:58 PM

I bet at just around 20 million a year.

Really???

pherein 06-30-2012 07:16 AM

Dude in the end, you know and I know they will cut who ever they have to for Brees to stay on this team.

SaintsBro 06-30-2012 12:07 PM

I look at it like this. We need to be rational and realistic, and not grope for stuff to worry or feel negative about. If you think that Drew is not going to sign with the Saints, okay, then WHAT exactly is he doing to do. You tell me! Somebody here come up with a scenario, a plan for him, that might really actually happen.... In order to believe that Drew's future is not with the Saints, you have to pretend to be Tom Condon for a minute, and come up with a SCENARIO or plan that works for Drew and is actually possible within the rules and what we know, that gets him to another destination. If Drew doesn't get a long-term deal done, then what does he do? Sit out a year? Then what happens when he gets tagged by the Saints AGAIN next year? How does this work so that it could get Drew coming out ahead by all hell breaking loose. Give us some specifics, of how it COULD happen, what needs to happen. It's got to be based on something other than a weird hunch, or a negative nellie feeling that it's not going to happen, based on past bad experiences that happened to us all during the bad years of the Saints. That's all behind us now. That's why the Super Bowl was so important, was more important for us than for most teams.

He they work out a deal to sign a one year deal and demand a trade for multiple draft picks and go to a team that is willing to pay him what he wants. It would take both sides to cooperate but if the Saints are really worried about cap space why not.

Oh ye of little faith....Although this doesn't quite pass the smell test.....it will get done.....it shall be grasshopper!

Yep, it all makes perfect sense, if you just don't put any THOUGHT INTO IT.

OK. That idea of a deal kinda works for the Saints, long term, but not for Loomis or for the Saints short-term. For one thing, it would be Loomis's death sentence, the end of his job here, and he has already said that much. So as long as he's here, it's highly unlikely to happen that way. Also, what happens, if the Saints announce today they have signed a deal, that they signed Drew, but it's only a one-year deal and it's already announced that Drew would be leaving after this year? What would that do to Benson's profits, for season ticket holders to know in July that Brees is gone after this year? Would they all renew? Remember, it has to be plausible scenario.

Drew has said many times that he won't sign a tag, because of what happened to him in San Diego. If he signs a one year deal designed for him to be traded in a year, you don't think fans would be booing the heck out of Drew the minute he walked onto the field in September? How is this gonna help Benson's bottom line?

Halo 06-30-2012 04:03 PM

How does Drew signing right now, or last month, benefit the Saints or Drew?

Last year he didn't show until training camp, it's what many seasoned QB's do over time, required or not.

What about Vilma? He's worth 10 mill against the cap. If he gets an injunction and can play this season, how do the Saints figure that cap hit? And how does that affect Drew's deal?

My answer is: Vilma's situation (not bounty, but cap money) plays a lot into it.

If the Saints wanted to part with Vilma I think he would be gone by now.

Lastly, when Drew signs that contract, he can no longer have contact with Sean Payton. Many speculate he's in contact now game planning for the season, and I believe it (Sean Payton will be sorely missed this season - and NO neither Vitt nor any coach is a replacement for him).

If training camp started then I would agree with you Dude, but until then I don't see how it matters whether he's signed in March, April, May, June or the day training camp starts.

Just my opinion.

He never said he wont play under the tag he just said it didnt work out for him too well last time and he didnt want to play under the tag. Anyway a one year deal is the same as using the tag from an injury standpoint, either way it does not offer him any security if he gets injured. If he does sign a one year deal be ready for him to request a trade.

SaintsBro 06-30-2012 06:22 PM

OK, you're saying that Drew will sign a one year deal with the Saints and then request a trade? Why would the Saints offer him a one year deal that wasn't the tag deal? The one year deal already is the franchise tag!

So following your scenario, he signs a one year deal with the franchise tag, and then turns around and requests a trade --- the Saints don't have to give it to him! Why would they? He's TAGGED. They can tag him again in 2013! Why would the Saints give him a one year deal that wasn't the basic boilerplate franchise tag deal they have already offered? Because again, if Loomis offers him that one-year-and-a-trade-for-draft-picks deal, this crazy idea you're suggesting, the fallout from it is insane-- then Loomis is toast, he loses his job, the profits for the Saints go down in 2013, Benson loses money, the Saints have no QB, it all goes in the toilet. Every party to the contract including Brees would have to be out of their minds to sign it.

If Brees signs the tag and then immediately requests a trade, what do you think will happen to him? He will get booed just for running out the tunnel in the Superdome, on opening day! His reputation will be trashed. He will be a national sports scandal and his endorsements will go in the crapper and there would be people lined up to smash the windows on his local Jimmy Johns!. You think he's that stupid? Just offer me something besides pure negativity as a reason WHY this might happen, that's what I'm trying to get you to do.
