Saints GM reponds to common criticisms

By RYAN CHATELAIN
The Courier

The New Orleans Saints have some wonderful fans. They also have some remarkable critics. In many cases, the two are one in the same.

Some of the gripes are fair. Some aren’t.

When the Saints Caravan was in Houma last week, I gave General Manager Mickey Loomis an opportunity to respond to a handful of commonly heard knocks on the team.

The Saints cannot win a championship with Aaron Brook at quarterback.
"I don’t think those people have any idea what they’re talking about, for one. If you look at what Aaron has done and the improvement he has made every year, it’s been really remarkable. He had 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions last year. It is the best season ever in Saints history by a quarterback.

\"Leadership is an intangible, and we have good leaders on our team. One of the things that we’ve struggled with is that our most productive players are young guys -- Aaron Brooks, Deuce McAllister, Donté Stallworth and our good players on defense as well. They can’t really assume leadership roles when they’re trying to learn the game themselves. As we improve, as they mature, Deuce, Darren Howard, Charles Grant, Aaron and Donté, those guys are going to become the leaders of our team. It’ll be their team.
Brooks has been in professional football longer and played longer than all the other guys Loomis mentioned. The entire, \"Aaron needs more time to develop\" argument was wearing thin last year. At some point, he has to actually deliver the goods. The most infuriating thing about the front office and coaching staff is their willingness to coddle Brooks. He\'s making the big money, he\'s the only guy they are going to play and he is still excused from any responsibility.

The telling thing about this comment is:
1. Loomis is willing to acknowledge that there is no leadership at the QB position.
2. Loomis is holding out no hope that Brooks is going to emerge as any sort of leader for this team.
3. The model that is being presented is a leadership by committee sort of approach.

What this tells us loud and clear is that Brooks can sure throw the ball a long ways, but he\'s dumber than a stump and possesses no intangibles that make the guys around him better. No leadership, no hope of leadership. :casstet:

I realize your user name is BrooksMustGo. So i am not surpirsed about your criticism. But i think you are overly negative on this matter and not level headed on this. Ravens won a Superbowl without a QB leader. They could have plugged in Jake Delhomme, Brad Johnson etc and won that year. So saying Brooks has to do all that....not necessarily.

Honestly, last year, i started seeing that the leader on offense is going to be Deuce. And there\' s nothing wrong with that. He seems to be the quiet type, but he leads by example.

I think we need someone noisy and hardcore from the D to step up and be a leader too. Just so you know, most teams have more than one leader, per se. Even the Packers when they were good.

Would you be upset if the Saints won a Superbowl with Brooks? It seems your hatred of Brooks is stronger than anything.

I say all this now because it is pre-season. Once the season starts and we start losing by 20 and I see the team just \'hanging out\' on the sideline like they\'re at a pub, and i get to boiling too :casstet:

And if you weren\'t my bad, it just reallly looks that way. Not trying to be a jerk, I\'m little off today. 3 of my best friends in the LA Nat guard are going to Iraq to patrol in Bradleys in either Tikrit or Bagdad. One of them gave me his entire football card collection. I\'ve got a bad feeling man.
Gator -- Try not to worry to much, man. I live here in Biloxi, which is home to Keesler Air Force Base and the Mississppi Air and Army National Guard. I have a lot of friends that are in Iraq. I hear from them often. Although, not as often as I used to. Just keep \'em in your prayers and hope for the best. It\'s a tough situation over there.
