After all the 'I want to retire as a New Orleans Saint' quotes we have heard and read from Brees, it would be a PR disaster for him to then request a trade next year; especially since the Saints have made three offers to make him the highest paid QB in NFL history.
I personally think Brees will sign his contract on July 16th; I have no idea why he would wait until then to sign it if he knows he is going to sign it anyway.
Perhaps, as someone posted, he has been meeting with SP and game-planning for the season; I don't see SP jeopardizing his return to coaching by meeting with Brees and drawing the ire of Kommisar Goodell.
Brees says he is not playing under a franchise tage but then says he is not holding/sitting out. Those 2 statements don't go together if a player wants more money.
I feel that Brees made the 'not holding out' for the fans benefit, and he is intentionally not signing until the deadline to make a point.
Maybe Loomis is finalizing one last big FA signing and THAT is what is holdng things up.
But the one thing I do know is, without Brees, the Saints will have a zero % chance of playing in any Super Bowls in the near future. I am not trying to knock Chase Daniel, but letting Brees walk and pinning the Saints future on Daniel would be like jilting Dolly Parton for Little Orpan Annie!
