Report: Bud Adams was willing to pay Peyton $25 million a year

Report: Bud Adams was willing to pay Peyton $25 million a year | ProFootballTalk
When he signed with the Broncos, Peyton Manning got a contract that will pay him a little more than $19 million a season. But Manning could have made significantly more than that.

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, if Manning had decided to make it all about the money, he could have gotten $25 million a year from the Titans, whose owner, Bud Adams, never made any secret that he desperately wanted Manning to return to Tennessee, where he had been a college star in the 1990s.

Mortensen didn’t say who his source was for that nugget, but it sounds like something that Tom Condon, the agent for both Manning and Drew Brees, would want to put out there as the ongoing negotiations between Brees and the Saints approach the critical July 16 deadline for franchise players to sign long-term contracts. With the Saints and Brees not seeing eye-to-eye on the parameters of a long-term deal, it’s good public relations for the Brees camp to get the word out that at least one other quarterback has been offered much more money than the Saints are offering Brees.

What the Saints are offering is reportedly a contract that would pay Brees $19.25 million a year, just barely more than the Broncos are paying Manning and the highest average salary for any contract in NFL history. But Brees reportedly wants more than $20 million a year. Or about 80 percent of what Adams was willing to pay Manning.

If this is what Brees and Condon have in mind?

Bye Bye Drew! And kiss my Black and Gold Azz!

That true. I give 20 million

19.5M per annum is too much for a guy that hasn't won any League MVP's...

I don't want to end up like Indy and watch the slow decline of a franchise and then a bottom falls out conclusion...

Let Drew play under the tag and walk - Payton found Romo on the practice squad and got Romo to the point he could start in this league; wonder how he'd had turned out if Payton had stayed...

To Mr. Condon...

It's about the coach, stupid...

Why not report Manning could have made down $50 Million.

Anything like this is pretty much, white noise.

I heard Bud Adams would have paid Joe Montana or Steve Young $50 million to come out of retirement and play for the Titans.

I think the point jeanpierre is making about Romo is that you don't have to like him, or think he's the bee's knees, but just look at the fact that under Payton's watch in Dallas he was brought up from practice squad to at least a decent starting level NFL quarterback. I don't think Romo is "all that and a bag of chips," but it's a very good point that he emerged and flourished as a QB under Sean Payton. Since Payton left, not so much.

Correct.... The question is if Brees is gone.. How long does it take Payton to find even another Homo? Its not like there is a huge "nameable" talent pool to just snatch one up and throw him under Center.

I keep bringing this point up LOL... Next year and beyond is completely a different story from this year... This year we do not even have a Payton to find another Homo to start.
