America’s addiction to the NFL

One of my good buddies at The Courier is Marty Authement, the lifestyles editor.

Like most people in Louisiana, he loves football and is a die-hard Saints and LSU fan.

But as far as sports goes, that’s the extent of his passion.

He may watch a little baseball here and there.

But don’t even try to get him to watch basketball unless you want to get that look.

You know that look you usually get when you say something bad about somebody’s mama?

Yeah, that look.

Right now, Marty’s going through football withdrawal.

How bad? He’s watching NFL Europe ... and he’s happy about it.

I fully expect him to be wrapped up in a blanket and curled in a corner shivering by mid-June.

But I bring up Marty because he’s not the only person like this.

In fact, most red-blooded American men share his pain.

The NFL’s hold on America is stronger than the most potent drug in existence.

America’s addiction to the NFL

I am in much the same state, and am thankful every day for the NFL Network, Total Access, and NFLE broadcasts.

I have a question though. Do you think NFL interest might be peaking? Popularity is so very often cyclical, might this be the beginning of a crest, and we see the NFL take a few steps backward in the next five years?

America’s addiction to the NFL

With Major League Baseball threatening to strike every 3 to 4 years, the NBA going on and on and on and on and on (get the picture yet?), and hockey being....well, let\'s face it, hockey, I don\'t see the NFL losing near the popularity that some of these other sports have in the United States. Hockey is primarily popular in the north US and Canada, the NBA is getting a more international flavor, and baseball is America\'s favorite pasttime, but the NFL is the perfect season. 16 games in 17 weeks, plus preseason games (usually around 3 or 4), and the playoffs until the Super Bowl. Football brings a higher level of anticipation than any other sport. What other sport do people get so stoked about their collegiate draft? The only one that comes remotely close is the NBA, which is mostly high schoolers these days. Football is a man\'s sport. If you\'re married, you get to put the family on hold for 3 hours a Sunday while you watch your favorite team bust people in the mouth and get paid for it. Honestly, can anyone tell me a better reason to grill, drink beer, and scream at the top of your lungs? Some may say the Fourth of July, but i\'m not able to swear at referees through the television for making a bad call. Football is definitely a drug and WE ALL ARE ADDICTED. I\'ll post the support line a bit later. :P

People shouldn't be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.

Occasionally some of that drug gets smuggled across the border into Canada. The track lines are becoming blurred by the bruising already. My name is lumm0x and I\'m a Saint-o-holic!!!
