This would be a very good move

The guy is a model of consistency no matter how old he is, a change of scenery would do some good and he could provide very good production for us

The Dude 07-27-2012 05:16 PM

This has been a rumor for weeks.

Ashley 07-27-2012 05:16 PM

Don't see it

Saints Nation: Saints Possibly Eyeing a Trade for Dwight Freeney?
Found 8 days ago on The Saints Nation:
PLAYERS: Dwight Freeney, Will Smith, Martez Wilson
TEAMS: Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints

FinSaint 07-27-2012 05:29 PM

No way should they trade Smith and Wilson for him, and now that there's a chance of Smith getting his 4 game suspension overturned or suspended, the Saints might not need another DE.

Freeney has a massive cap hit and he'll be an UFA come next offseason, so without a new contract settlement to accompany the trade, it would be too expensive for a 1-year deal - $14M base salary and $19M cap hit.

No. Move on.

alleycat_126 07-27-2012 09:55 PM

Bull, Will Smith got to nothing last year and im usually a Will Smith supporter. Plus DE's are going to have to cover open area sometimes in Zone scheme and Freeney way faster than Smith. Fit him in.....

QBREES9 07-27-2012 11:01 PM

No, bring him in. Bloomfield Ct Dwight Freeny. That = a Press Pass for me !

How are you going to fit a $19M salary cap hit under $8M cap they have, and do you honestly think Freeney is worth virtually more than Brees?

jeanpierre 07-28-2012 06:20 AM

Rather have Cliff Avril, younger, stronger, faster; but can we afford him?

Just PAY THE MAN!!!

And don't forget, Morstead's cap hit just went up a couple million.

Its gonna be tricky enough to resign Graham, Bushrod, Ellis (or any starting DT), Galette, and Devery.

Would like to have him, but don't see how we can afford it. Even if he does restructure we still have guys to take care of who are already here.

I was under the impression that Morstead's new contract was an extension to the current contract, so this year's cap hit will remain the same ($1.95M), but the next 6 years will be at a higher cap hit (an average of $3.65M).

That is why he tweeted that he'd be around for 7 more years.

I was referring to next years cap hits. But regardless, either a 19million hit for 2012, or a long term re-structure will make it too difficult to re-sign the guys I listed.

I'd pass.

lee909 07-28-2012 10:36 AM

Id rather draft the best DE we can next season

I don't know how many good DE's will still be around at pick 32 :)

lee909 07-28-2012 10:44 AM

We go to option 2 and outscore everyone then

I know, and I fully agree with you on that signing Freeney would just be too costly in relation to the benefit he would probably give the Saints' pass rush.

Maybe the Eagles or the Jets will make a trade for him to improve their "dream teams." :-D

Rugby Saint II 07-29-2012 01:18 PM

no thanks

ChrisXVI 07-29-2012 02:28 PM

Not gonna happen. What's so wrong with seeing what we have in Martez Wilson and Junior Gallette?? I hate the idea of not giving OUR guys a chance to step up and bringing in someone else.
