edit:
sorry it only says players at this point, but you can only hope. Please change the title Halo.

I hope this isn't conditional upon a confession.

Me too. Vilma is in it to save his reputation and career, not about money, taking a settlement is like admitting having some part in it.

SaintsBro 08-05-2012 11:24 PM

I would not be surprised. I think the bounty thing in itself is not going to get Goodell fired. But the scab officials looked TURRIBLE out there tonight. The bounty thing + officials strike + flawed CBA is going to be his undoing, with the owners who sign his paycheck. Something has to give, and Vilma's lawsuit is a lot easier than the other two problems for Goodell to solve. Saints fans tend to think he's on the hotseat for what Goodell did with the bounty thing, but it's really all of it put together. I would not be surprised if something is worked out on the Vilma thing to make it go away.

Utah_Saint 08-05-2012 11:28 PM

If Vilma didn't put $10,000.00 on the table to anyone that could knock Kurt Warner and Brett Favre out of the game, then I hope Vilma fights it to the bitter end. That's a pretty ugly thing Goodell said about him and if it's not true he shouldn't get away with it.

Course it's easy for me to sit on my couch and say that. He loses 2.8 million dollars this year and possibly end his career, even if he wins.

Halo 08-05-2012 11:31 PM

Sean Payton should NOT have suffered a year suspension and treated the way he was.

If it's BS for Vilma, it's BS for Sean Payton!!!

QBREES9 08-05-2012 11:31 PM

This sound like good news.

SmashMouth 08-05-2012 11:38 PM

Well... Consider the source too. ESPN has to make amends, maybe? I say show us the money!

QBREES9 08-05-2012 11:54 PM

If hasn't been on the NFL N. I don't believe anything till i see it on the NFL N

SmashMouth 08-05-2012 11:59 PM

Linky here on ESPN

Hhmmmmmmmmmmm!

CharityMike 08-06-2012 12:00 AM

But lets think about this..why would they do this if there evidence is so damning?? They just laid there hand on the table and guess what.. THEY WERE BLUFFING!!

It makes perfect sense as to why no other information was shown or leaked.
If I was Vilma I would tell him to suck on it!! It's not happening..you are going down for what you have done to me, my team, my city and my FANS!!

QBREES9 08-06-2012 12:09 AM

Goodell, boy did you screw with the wrong guy.

SmashMouth 08-06-2012 12:11 AM

Vilma should not settle for 8 games. Are you kidding me? RG wants him to drop his defamation lawsuit.

Halo 08-06-2012 12:11 AM

I think this is it. Read the article as the video is old...

Sources -- Jonathan Vilma suspension could be reduced if he withdraws civil suit - ESPN

D_it_up 08-06-2012 12:13 AM

Like Admiral Ackbar said in "Return of the Jedi", it's a trap!

QBREES9 08-06-2012 12:13 AM

The talks could also lead to reductions in the suspensions of the other three players -- Saints defensive end Will Smith (four games), Packers defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove (eight games), and Browns linebacker Scott Fujita (three games).

Settlement talks are expected to continue Monday and sources say that Friday's next scheduled appearance before U.S. District Court Judge Ginger Berrigan could serve as a soft deadline to reach a settlement. The two sides filed more arguments in the Louisiana court this past Friday in advance of this week's hearing.

I guess they saw the evidence. Their wasn't any !

SaintsBro 08-06-2012 12:15 AM

Remember that the judge explicitly told the NFL lawyers that their argument had problems, that Goodell "sliced the salami too thin," and she also told Vilma's attorneys a few minutes earlier, that he may be right but she may not have a remedy. I think she was basically TELLING them to work it out amongst themselves and settle. Judges do this all the time.

SmashMouth 08-06-2012 12:15 AM

If even remotely true, this should open the doors for SP's speedier return!

Thats a good point. How about Loomis and Vitt too.

SmashMouth 08-06-2012 12:20 AM

During the pregame, Marshall Faulk interviewd Brees whom had some candid answers. Perhaps this is a result?

QBREES9 08-06-2012 12:22 AM

Smash thank for posting I missed this.

Ok not crap !

Halo 08-06-2012 12:34 AM

From those videos posted above, Drew Brees is THE PREMIER QB, player and TEAM SPOKESMAN I have EVER witnessed in my life.
Drew Brees is the ULTIMATE class act of the NFL.

Haters gonna hate simply because they don't have this kind of leadership on their team and in their locker-room.

sharke 08-06-2012 05:26 AM

But why would the NFL settle? Their case is clearly air tight w/o any room for doubt....unless Goodell was wrong but...nah, that could never happen......

I am not a truster of twitter lol..

However you asked a good question so here is my take. The NFL wants this to go away.. ASAP. I believe the NFL also has a feeling that on Friday the judge will grant a stay of execution allowing the players to play until there is a legal outcome... This would ensure that this drags on, It would also be perceived that the NFL took a loss of yardage on that ruling, and that Goodell didnt act correctly... We know this but a judge letting those guys play would make that official.

They have already publicly admitted that they were wrong on Hargrove.

As far as for the coaches... Well that is going to depend on how hard Vilma and Ginsburg want to push in the negotiations. The coaches are not included in this suit and they have all publicly (except for Vitt) admitted and apologized...

This will test the strength of both sides cases and testicular fortitude.

Yeah, I'm a fan boy of the trilogy. I try to make it a point to make a reference once a day. :lightsabres:

jeanpierre 08-06-2012 06:53 AM

IF this were true, then Goodell must be dragged into court and forced to show docs; if there's doubt about the evidence, then the Inquisition comes into full doubt...

I want to get Cerullo on the rack, err, stand and sit that little coward squirm...

saintsfan1976 08-06-2012 06:56 AM

Keep pushing Vilma. You are the only one who can bring this entire facade down!

I agree, though also wonder if this would have further implication eventually leading to violations of CBA. If a federal court rules against goodell and the league for how the case was handled then it would violate the office and trust placed in their hands as acting disciplinarian which was granted by the players in last year's decision. Once this violation is found then it opens the proverbial floodgates to other investigations regarding discipline or whatever. Which aside from dragging on forever, would completely f*ck the league over. Making the urge to settle quickly and lose little ground (opposed to massive) tempting.

sidenote, I also like how goodell keeps hiding behind the league and shield now in HIS civil case.

Truth...Justice...American way.... all that glory and fun stuff.

As mush as I enjoyed seeing men in pads and helmets playing football once again.. I do not want the following to happen:

Judge rules that CBA has been violated, needs to be rewritten, season is cancelled until a new CBA is in place.

Sorry Vilma.. My need for sanity overrides your career.

I doubt it would ever get to that. Would lead to more rulings overturned and personal suits if such an event happened.

Budsdrinker 08-06-2012 08:34 AM

Here's what my crystal ball is telling me. Injuction will be granted, suspended players get to play which gets everyone in an uproar calling for Goodell to step down because he over reacted to having his feelings hurt in the first place and Condolezza Rice is the new commisioner.

Suspended players get to play except for Vilma who cant play because he is still injured... lol

Beastmode 08-06-2012 08:42 AM

I suspected they would try and call a truce. If they cut all suspensions in half, including the coaches then yes, this is a good deal. Both sides made mistakes. Meet in the middle and drive on. If it's just Vilma then no.

Vilma should just go ahead and fight it out. It makes no sense to adjust one player's sentence.
