The Saints lost only one key player — FB Terrelle Smith — from their starting lineup during the offseason, but it seemed as though they solved the problem by signing ex-Bills FB Sam Gash. Gash is considered one of the better lead blockers in the game and appeared to be the perfect fit to blow open holes for RB Deuce McAllister. But times have changed dramatically. We’re told head coach Jim Haslett and his staff became less enchanted with Gash once they got a good look at him, and his recent arthroscopic knee surgery may convince the Saints that they should go in another direction. Sources say the team believes Gash has lost a step or two and isn’t the player it thought it was getting when it signed him. We hear Haslett plans to go with more one-back sets while rookie Mike Karney gets his feet wet. Gash, meanwhile, likely will be released prior to training camp.

Now this is what i meant when i said that Sam Gash would be no help to us way back when. :casstet:

Karney will do fine. He was an honors candidate at Arizona State, so he\'s got some brains. All he has to do is block, how hard is that??? For the love of God, he lists his two favorite hobbies as 1. Watching movies 2. Pushing cars

This guy pushes two ton automobiles around...as a hobby???

Nothing to worry about... They plan on using more one back sets with the WR\'s in house and just turn Deuce loose. Gash I believe was a planned gamble and still could be in good shape to play... I also think the rookie will be awesome and beat out gash. Besides we have some TE\'s that could fit in at FB.

From what I\'ve read, Karney was a local hero at ASU: the fans loved his hard work and on field brutality. If he reaches that same status in NO then we\'re good. If he can catch a pass occaionally and convert third downs, then he just might be an upgrade. Terrelle was a wicked blocker but a liability with the ball in his hands.

If we suffer because we lost a 1-dimensional FB who only participates in 20% of the snaps we have a ton more problems than replacing him with a rookie.

FB may be the easiest position on the field to find an adequate replacement.

Punters are more difficult to replace than one-dimensional FB\'s.

I totally agree with Dano. If loosing one player makes us go from bad to worse then throw in the towel right now. Besides being a good blocker what exactly did Terrell Smith ever really do for us that can\'t be replaced easily?

I didn\'t watch the Voodoo this year. Is this guy a blocking back or a running back? Can he catch the ball? Who do we cut to give him a position? No way we keep two fullbacks on the roster with all of the wr\'s and te\'s we\'ve gotta make room for.

Also, I loved T-Rex, but he is not irreplaceable. If Karney can catch, he\'s an upgrade. What\'s more, I\'d personally like to see Boo and Conwell on the field at the same time this year. The two TE set will give us more pass/run options.
