Goodell's Propaganda Machine Hard At Work - Gayle Sayers Embarrasses himself over Bountygate

1 Attachment(s)
Less than 48 hours before Jonathan Vilma's hearing in U.S. Federal Court to determine whether his case will continue against the NFL and the evidence discovery phase starts, we think the NFL's negative PR and propaganda machine is hard at work, AGAIN!

This time it sounds like Roger Goodell got Hall of Famer Gayle Sayers fired up on "faulty facts" and Sayers stages a ridiculous emotional display in an interview for Comcast's SportsNet Inside Look where Sayers expresses disgust for the Saints players and coaches, and Sayers proclaims (Saints) Team owners paid Saints players to hurt other players for money.

Quote:

Pro Football Hall of Famer Gale Sayers became surprisingly emotional when asked about the Saints’ bounty program in a TV interview, showing anger and sadness and even suggesting that those involved should go to prison.

Sayers said in an interview for Comcast SportsNet’s Inside Look that he was disgusted by the Saints’ bounty program and that he believes the Saints’ players and coaches should be banned from the sport.

“How can you do that? I have never had anybody say ‘I’m going to break your arm.’ Never!” Sayers said. “They should never go out there and play this game again, go out and coach this game again.”

Sayers also said there are “owners out there that are telling there football players . . . ‘Go out and I will give you $1,500 to break his leg, to break his arms.’” With that comment, Sayers either misspoke or misunderstood the facts of the NFL’s investigation into the Saints’ bounty program. There have been no allegations at all that Saints owner Tom Benson was involved in any type of pay-to-injure scheme.

But Sayers believes strongly that the Saints did something very, very wrong. When interviewer David Kaplan told Sayers that some people think those involved in bounties should go to jail, Sayers replied, “You’re damn right they should.”

Gale Sayers is furious about bounties | ProFootballTalk

Why is Gale Sayers furious about a bounty?

I am pretty sure the teams he played on back in the 60s I think it was had bounty programs, I bet bounty programs in his era was very common.

also Sayers is quite misinformed to.

OH it's quite funny!

Everyone, be sure to watch the video.

Seer1 08-08-2012 10:38 PM

I thought it was pretty sad. That dude should be involved in the big lawsuit. He wasn't quite all there.

NOLA54 08-08-2012 10:39 PM

apparently he has bought into the lies.

TXGSP 08-08-2012 10:52 PM

Maybe he should join the lawsuit(s) against the NFL - apparently he can't grasp the facts and had one too many concussions.

Wonder if the old Raiders team targeted players - the league sure has played enough replays showing them pushing players back to the turf. The whole "bounty" issue is a CULTURE created and promoted by the league...

OK.. Maybe I had a bit too much Saki' tonight, but this is just getting stupid.

saintfan 08-08-2012 10:52 PM

So he's pissed off about something for which there is no evidence? I agree with Seer1. He needs to call a lawyer and get in on the lawsuit because his got too much air in his thinking cap.

Look, I would normally give the old guy a break, but I think his comments were sensational staged and outrageous. Ignorant or not, he put himself out there.

The Dude 08-08-2012 11:00 PM

I bet he was paid off. Something fishy about the timing of this and the wiretapping allegations that have resurfaced

QBREES9 08-08-2012 11:01 PM

Are you kidding me.

|Mitch| 08-08-2012 11:05 PM

WTF!?! I'm to dumbfounded to say anything... Except **** Roger!

WOW...somebody didn't take there medication. The interviewer should have handed him a bounty paper towel to wipe his tears.

Is he just old. Don't tell me they did have a bounty program when he played. Conrad Dobler, anyone remember him. He would kill you to stop you. Gale please stop.

We players in the NFL that killed people. Got in the way of a police investigation, use drugs hung out with hookers. Please. by the way that Saints Defense didn't hurt anybody. they Just played defense.

Dude Whatever !

Beastmode 08-08-2012 11:52 PM

His speech is fragmented, long long uncomfortable pauses. I actually feel bad for him. He better watch what he says is all I can say.
Probably enough there to drop a slander suit on him right now. This is on the record. He said the Saints and their coaches paid $1500 to break arms and legs.

pherein 08-08-2012 11:57 PM

Gale Sayers was one of the best RB's ever in football. Its hard to believe that Goodell is using someone so gullible like this. Its disgusting at best.
Sayers tore ligaments in his left knee and was never the same again after that. Im sure that was brought up in their conversation.

Roger sinks to a new low using an old man and great football legend like that. Shows his complete lack of respect for anyone, and players achievements.

pumpkindriver 08-09-2012 01:24 AM

Geez, what a tool Gayle Sayers is now. That was nothing but pure slander. Tom Benson should get a legal team up to Chicago asap and file suit against this dirtbag who used to be a premier RB in the NFL.

The Dude 08-09-2012 01:30 AM

I wonder if thats what Reggie Bush will be like in 40 years.

NOS2SB 08-09-2012 02:07 AM

What a loooooooser!!!

FinSaint 08-09-2012 04:09 AM

Well, what can you expect from a Bears' player..?

And it's OK if he feels that way, I'll let it slide.

Just like I won't go to a retirement home and correct all the old timers there when they speak out of their a$$ - I can't be bothered with correcting Sayers.

Ashley 08-09-2012 05:06 AM

This is just very sad, I can't believe he is saying this.

Ashley 08-09-2012 05:16 AM

Who is is clown giving the interview also? He is just a idiot.
Mr. Sayers I fell sorry for you, and before you open your damn mouth. Run the question through your head first, then answer it.

TheOak 08-09-2012 06:30 AM

there or their?

I am not sure this is a propaganda tactic.... The NFL would have discussed this with Sayers before hand which usually means the emotion would have not been there like it was...

I believe it is genuine... Genuine crazy talk... Obviously he is not in "complete control" of his faculties. That sort of rage would have been what I would have expected from someone who had a leg broken on Sunday (ending his career) and undeniable proof came out Tuesday that it was intentional.

I did read his bio: Seems his career was ended because of knee injuries. Maybe that is why he was so emo.
Gale Sayers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gales career ended in 1971. Bounty programs existed in 1974... Gale needs to read the news.
The Redskins Had A Bounty On Roger Staubach In 1974 | NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Wait!!!!! I found something else:
Update: Gibbs talked to Jason Reid on Tuesday about incentive-based pay during his first coaching stint, when the NFL permitted teams to reward players with a set amount of extra money.
George Starke: Joe Gibbs would hand out 100 dollar bills for hits on QBs - DC Sports Bog - The Washington Post

The NFL has been aware of and condoned this in the past.

jnormand 08-09-2012 06:30 AM

Much respect to Sayers as a player...but ah...he acted like a...like a....a Fool!

Did you just compare Gale Sayers to Reggie bush?

burningmetal 08-09-2012 07:18 AM

As if a man named Gale isn't ridiculous enough, he goes off about something he clearly doesn't know one thing about.

Utah_Saint 08-09-2012 07:24 AM

It's sad to see what he's become.

Only in terms of lunacy, I'm sure.

Besides Matt Ryan and Eli Manning, this is the only other NFL player who I can recall that has spoken out in opposition to what the Saints "d i d"

burningmetal 08-09-2012 07:29 AM

I couldn't even watch the whole video. I wanted to punch the guy in the face, and that's never a healthy frame of mind. Who ever said anything about somebody wanting to break their arm, Gale? How can you judge an entire organization based not only on the NFL's rhetoric, but on your own made up stories. You think the owner had something to do with it, when not even Goodell, himself, ever claimed that? I have no respect for this man. He proved himself to be nothing but a weak minded pawn.

SaintsBro 08-09-2012 07:39 AM

This is total propaganda -- why say this now, why didn't he speak out when the story first broke back in March, and what does his opinion have to do with anything. Gayle Sayers was a great player but he is one of those guys who the NFL has in their back pocket...he got hurt in an era when players were low paid, and when players who got hurt didn't get anything and the league knows he got screwed, but he's very popular, so the league has consistently funneled him money over the years through documentaries, NFL films, trotted him out at ceremonies, included him in paid autograph sessions, fly him places to toss a ceremonial coin toss, etc. To casual older fans (older white male demographic of a certain generation) he's like a poster boy for heartbreaking injury and the dangers of football, and the league knows that.

It's a ham-fisted attempt to get sympathy because their legal position is weak. It must be really weak for them to be resorting to this now.

If this was planned, it will work.

The majority will never listen to the facts, it's tedious. There are too many details and timelines to follow. It's much easier to win over public opinion with little stunts like having an old, beloved hero make a bitter and tearful speech about the bad guys. Precede that with an authority figure pounding his fist in moral outrage such as Goodell's comments on Saturday. And muddy the waters with negative distractions like, oh I don't know say...a wiretapping investigation. You'll have the majority eating out of your hand in no time. Thinking is overrated. It's much easier to have your opinions spoon fed to you. And self righteous indignation is just icing on the cake.

Propaganda 101

ScottyRo 08-09-2012 08:25 AM

Sounds to me like the Sayers is implicating at least two other owners for bounties since the NFL has clearly indicated that Benson was not involved in this:

Sayers also said there are “owners out there that are telling there football players . . . ‘Go out and I will give you $1,500 to break his leg, to break his arms.’”

Things a crazy man says that makes you go..."hmmm".

That is why I do not think it was scripted or propaganda. Too much crazytalk.

mutineer10 08-09-2012 08:52 AM

Interesting, a guy whose career was so dramatically shortened by injury is still angry & bitter almost 50 years later. Not that Gayle is one to hold a grudge! :)

He is not practiced in the art of Ley-Tit-Geaux.

Add one more to Vilma's list of targets in his defamation lawsuit. Does GS have any $ left to chip in to help RG pay up to Vilma?

NonieT 08-09-2012 09:46 AM

You notice this crap comes out right after Dennis Allen comments that in the 2 years he was here with Gregg Williams there was no bounty. Coincidence. I don't think so.
