New Saints coach returns to defense
The Associated Press

June 24, 2004

NEW ORLEANS - John Pease was with the New Orleans Saints during their glory years.

He hopes to be able to say that about his latest stint with the team as well.

Pease, the new defensive line coach for the Saints, held that same position under Jim Mora in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The defensive line then, known as the Dome Patrol, helped the Saints to its first winning season and its first division crown.

With Pease on the staff, the Saints advanced to the playoffs four times - including three of Pease's last five years. Saints' defensive units were the league's best in 1990-91.

"We had a good defense in those days," Pease said. "I think we have another one now. The guys I've seen since I got back have really impressed me with their size and speed. I'm kind of holding my breath to see if they can come through like they show."

Sunshiner club:
I think he\'s a much better acquisition than any CB we could have picked up.
He should get that young talented line playing to their potential.
He\'s proven himself an excellent coach and was highly sought after by numerous teams.
He\'s known for getting the most out of hid D-linemen and knows how a D-line should play to allow the LB\'s to be aggressive and make plays. He\'s especially good at developing young talented guys and motivating the troops to give it their all on every stinkin play.
I\'m really excited to see how much our D-line improves under his leadership.

Moonshiner Reply:
He hasn\'t shown me anything yet so whats your freakin point?
He\'ll probably suck since we\'ve been 8-8 for the last 100 years, you clueless boob!

I sure hope he returns the line to its former greatness. In 1991 and 1992 our three leaders in teh sack category had more sacks than our entire team last season. Actually, that\'s true of the 2000 season as well.

In fact, Jim Haslett, the great defensive minded coach, whose focus has been our Dline ever since he got here and shipped Glover out (and Johnson left) has produced some great numbers. Just take a look at our sack totals year by year under Haslett.

2000 - 66
2001 - 53
2002 - 38
2003 - 31

I sure hope Pease can reverse that trend. Good thing Haslett got rid of all those worthless Ditka players on D and found some studs for our line. :P
