New Orleans Saints Adrian Arrington’s Knee Injury Opens The Door For The Number Four Receiver Position
 

If Arrington does require surgery and will have to miss some time some players that could vie for the number four spot are Nick Toon, Joseph Morgan, Courtney Roby, and Andy Tanner. Toon might have had the best shot of any wide receiver to claim the number four position, but unfortunately he has been dealing with some injuries this offseason. Toon was not able to play against the Cardinals and will likely miss the Saints’ next preseason game against the New England Patriots. Not being able to play in these preseason games is definitely hurting Toon’s chances to claim the number four spot.

Roby has been with the Saints for a while now and has always been a great contributor to the Saints’ special teams. Roby made a case for himself in the Hall of Fame game where he recorded 54 receiving yards on just four receptions. Roby is a proven entity on the Saints and he could definitely help their receiving corps given the chance.

Tanner was a pleasant surprise for the Saints as he had big gains against the Cardinals. In Sunday’s game Tanner caught four passes for 75 yards. Tanner played a solid game despite losing a fumble and dropping some passes. Tanner really established himself as a serious contender to make the Saints 53-man roster.

At this point I think it might be a two-man race between Tanner and Morgan. Of course, if Arrington’s injury is not that serious I still think he is a lock to be the number four receiver. With that said, Morgan might be able to edge Tanner for the number four spot. Tanner did play better than Morgan in the Hall of Fame game, but that was just one game. I will be interested to see who can contribute more in Thursday’s preseason game against the New England Patriots. Despite a few dropped passes Morgan had a solid game against the Cardinals as he caught three passes for 35 yards.

Morgan could be the speedster the Saints are looking for and I really think he would complement the Saints’ top three receivers. Morgan is able to beat his defender and will be able to catch the long ball from Brees. If Arrington’s injury is serious enough to keep him out of the lineup I think the number four spot is Morgan’s for the taking. However, Morgan will have to outplay Tanner and the other wide receivers to solidify himself as the team’s number four receiver.

4th receiver is going to be the biggest fight that will go down to the wire this preseason.

Here's how I would break those guys down...

The way that I see it, Roby and Morgan are in a one-on-one battle for a roster spot. They are similar style receivers that will also be used on special teams if they make the 46. Right now, I give the advantage to Roby based on performance in the preseason games, special teams contributions, and the veteran edge. Morgan does have potential, but he has to be solid through the rest of the pre-season.

I really like Tanner so far this preseason. He's shown a lot of good things, and a couple more performances like he has had make him hard to cut. I don't know if he makes the starting four, but I hope the Saints find a way to keep him around.

Toon has an excellent shot at the fourth receiver spot once he gets on the field. Worst case scenario I see is Toon as the fifth receiver on the roster. If he's not ready yet, then Roby probably replaces him as the fourth. Maybe Tanner.

Arrington, I remain skeptical about. The guy has trouble staying healthy, and has never really shown me anything astonishing on the field. The coaches have obviously kept him around this long because they see something in him though, and they know more than me. I would love for him to get healthy and prove me wrong, I just don't know if its going to happen.

So in a dream scenario, I run with Toon at fourth, Roby at fifth/teams, and Tanner on the PR.

Arrington has been boasted in the offseason as the feel good/breakout story.
He can't compete for 4th wide out if he's not healthy.

If he's not healthy this preseason, he's going to have a hard time making a case because the competition is fierce and exciting.

The way things are looking, there are 5 WR spots on the team. The first three are obviously taken, Colston, Henderson, and Moore. From there it does get interesting. Right now I would have to say Roby makes it, then from there it is anyones guess. My best guess is Toon is going to be headed to IR, which is the equivalent of a red shirt year in the NFL, Morgan probably makes the team and is the return guy. I don't see Arrington or Tanner making the final cut.

Morgan gets a spot due to his return skills, big play ability and his upside. Roby contributes on special teams and has shown well recieving so far in preseason. AA is done. He can't stay healthy and has no value on special teams. Toon has a leg up due to being drafted. But, he's not healthy and really needs some playing time in preseason or he will likely be placed on IR. Tanner, while having maybe the best hands on the squad, is on the outside looking in. The good news is he will easily make the practice squad after being cut. Unless an injury happens, I see the Saints keeping 5. Colston, Moore, Henderson, Morgan and Roby. AA and Tanner cut. Toon to IR. Tanner to the PS.

Roby is working hard this preseason to keep his spot. I don't see how the Saints cut him if he maintains his pace from the first 2 games.

Behind him it looks like a toss-up between Morgan & Tanner. We could make a case for keeping both, although one is likely bound for the practice squad.

What can you say about Toon & Arrington? Hard to gauge their talent when it's not on display ...

Roby does seem to have less of a case of the dropsies than Morgan. Methinks Morgan will reside on the PS as will Tanner.

We had six wider receivers on the roster last year.

Arrington
Colston
Henderson
Meachem
Moore
Roby

I would suspect that we'll keep 6 again this year.

Forget arrington, its the courtney roby show at the minute and he's showing he wants position and is making plays to make sure he gets it
