Backup QB

Saints are really screwed if Brees has to go out for anytime. I am convinced that the Saints do not have a capable backup QB on their roster at this time. If something were to happen to Brees, it is pretty much an automatic 3-13 season. Chase Daniel has been a tease, and has not shown any semblance of an NFL QB. Canfield is really a complete joke, and I have no idea why McClown is on the team.

As much as it pains me to say this, they should employ Jake Delhomme or Jeff Garcia as the backup QB. Seriously, could save a season if Brees pops an arm or something.

That might very well happen if the need arises. However for the time being its easier and better to keep developing young guys and try to make them good enough. That might get you a nice pick in a trade down the line.

Re: Backup QB

I thought about that during the HOF game & did my best to temper my judgement with the fact it was the first preseason game, but what has Daniels done in the past to ease a fan's concern?

It is what is and backups are what they are, backups. Daniels looks serviceable to me as a backup, which means he comes in for a few plays to manage a game if Drew dings his hand on someone's helmet or something, but not necessarily as a long-term replacement.

I agree with Crusader, develop the young guys and somewhere along the line, you end up with a trade ... but from what I saw, McCown is going to need a-hell-of-a-lot of 'developing', :).

I like Daniel. He's a fighter. He has skills. But, the one guy I would get if he was available would be Colt McCoy.

I think its a no brainer if Bree's goes down so does our season.

Lets face it Chase is service at best. He's just a body to hold down the position until we get Bree's back on the field. We could do worse at the back up QB position like say Canfield. lol.

Canfield is complete garbage... Chase can atleast move the ball down the field, he just has to watch those red-zone ints

Speaking of Dilfer, that dude should be on a soap opera. He gets so freaking emotional during those Elite 11 camps. And to think, he actually won a super bowl. Maybe the QB isn't always the most important player... when your defense sets an NFL record for fewest points allowed, anyway :p

Last I saw, he was with the Cheifs. Don't know if he still is.

I couldn't help but think these exact thoughts after watching tonights game. McCown has been in the league how long? He looked just as bad as Canefields.

Re: Backup QB

Not taking up for any of them... If Brees goes down we are hosed. Their playing style may be function of who they are trying to emulate....

Brees is an extremely quick route reader, he is also quick on the trigger with a quick ball.... I am sure Curly, Larry, and Moe all want to be like Shimp.... problem is that they can not run through the progressions as fast as Brees which throws the receivers off due to the change of pace.

The end result is 3 QB's that dont read progressions very well because they rush but can not process that fast... So they panic and just try to get rid of the ball.. except for Daniel who thinks he is Vick or "that guy" that went to the Jets (I cant say his name)...

Some of the throws from all three looked like the decision was made in the huddle and they were going to throw it at a point, after 3 steps, regardless if Elvis Aaron Presley him self was standing there.

McCowen is in his 9th year <---- this is not a project. Unles he is being kept to thwart off an age discrimination law suit he needs to go.

Daniel is in his 4th... He has value for a trade.. I don't care how hard he works or how much heart he has, the Chase Daniel project is not progressing, and if Brees goes down we are going to have to bring someone else to win anyway. After 4 years he has been evaluated enough. He "aint gettin it".

Canfield is a rook and I wont gig him yet.

McCoy is garbage. Daniels is 10x the QB that McCoy will be. There is a reason he dropped so far in the draft. He had every piece needed to win national championships around him in Texas and couldn't get it done.

Remember, McCoy is in Cleveland. CLEVELAND!!!!!! He won 6 games in CLEVELAND!!!!! Sitting behind Brees for 3 years Im sure he would be better then what Daniels has been for the past 3 years. One way or another, they need a top 2 rd QB in the next 2 years to learn behind drew.

Re: Backup QB

Every team in the top 10 would be devastated by losing their starter.

I doubt we'd fall to 3-13 because we'd still be better than most teams even with Daniel at the helm. We have a ton of weapons.

We'd be about an 8-8 team.

I guess the Patriots should be worried as well. There is about to be a boom on the market for washed up quarterbacks.

Chase Daniel isn't Drew Brees. Temper expectations... there's a reason why they are backup quarterbacks. Also wanted to point out that the Pats has some of their defensive starters playing into the 4th quarter.

Ya'll may scoff at this, but I actually think that the play where Chase takes off running like crazy for the green patch up the middle, then falls down, could actually move the chains in a tough game against a real team (even playoffs) and get some first downs and some yards when we need it, if God forbid we ever needed him to. He's no Brees, of course, but I'm just sayin' --Alex Smith does that trick. Smith did it to us late in the 2010 49ers game, they had a whole drive near the end of the game where he kept tucking and running with it, and catching people off guard, getting first downs. Then he did it again to us in the 2011 playoff game.

It's not how I'd want us to make our living, of course, but it theoretically could help us survive for like half a game, even maybe for a few games, just off the unpredictability.

Re: Backup QB

None of us would exactly be thrilled if Brees went down ... but as others have said, most teams would be in big trouble losing their starter. Heck, some teams are in trouble when their starter is perfectly healthy!

Given his familiarity with our system, team-friendly contract, etc. I guess Daniel is about as good as anyone we could pick up off the street. He's as good as most team's backup, anyway.

Drew will also run for the grass when he "has no choice"... I watch Chase tuck the ball last night and run while Cadet I believe it was was standing alone 5 yards past the first down marker practically screaming and waving his hands for Chase to throw the ball to him..

Daniels propensity to tuck and run for a first down when he gets rattled is not not what bothers me.... Its his inability to slide and come to a stop with out head on collision that does... If Drew goes down.. I do not think Chase will last... Leaving us with Rookie Canfield.

That's when we put Lance Moore or Darren Sproles at QB!!! :) At least they'd be getting the ball in their hands!

Re: Backup QB

Not saying that Chase is starting QB material but he has been playing behind the second string offensive line. I believe he'll be much better when he gets more time. It's been pointed out already that he goes through his progressions slower than Brees. Maybe that extra second the first string line could give him could make all the difference.

He looked pretty good Sunday night. We could do a lot worse.

I used to think the same thing but Chase is more than a capable QB. He looked good once he settled down and he had a second and third teem line in front of him which may be our shallowest position on the team.

Re: Backup QB

Well I've heard it before... A back up QB is like a spare tire. You don't want it around until its needed. IMO... if something did happen to Drew I'd still be happy with Chase.
I don't want to go crazy and spend all kinds of money towards a guy who we may never see except for pre season and routes

It's time to start looking for a back up QB. I wonder if Payton is researching QB's with his free time?

chase is the man. he,s consistent. he always seems to drive our team down to the red zone year after year and throw a darn pick. then he with hands on helmet runs straight for drew on the sidelines lookin for answers, then drew pulls off favorite w.c.fields line, bug off boy u bother me, then drew pops another seed, bbq flavored. yep 4 yrs going. lol

Re: Backup QB

As a general rule, I think it's better for a team to invest in a solid offensive line than in a great backup QB.

Daniel has been solid this offseason. Maybe tucks and runs too much, but I believe that would change behind the starting offensive line. He does what it takes to move the chains, love that about him. I also don't blame the pick against the Pata against him for a second. I think he could win us a few games if it came down to it.
