New Orleans Saints interim coach Joe Vitt putting same stamp on team that Sean Payton left
For the past six seasons, they've gotten with Sean Payton's program, adopting his self-confident ways and adhering to the smallest of details.
Now that Joe Vitt is the interim head coach while Payton is serving a season-long suspension, Vitt, who will serve a six-game suspension as well for his role in the Saints' bounty scandal, isn't changing anything.
Saints players said Vitt, a veteran coach of 34 years, is a respected leader and has already put his stamp on the team.
It just happens to be the same stamp as the imprint left by Payton.
Three weeks into training camp, Vitt has continued to follow the blueprint that helped the Saints win three NFC South titles, an NFC championship and the Super Bowl in the last six seasons.
"Our team was built a certain way," Saints left tackle Jermon Bushrod said. "We all have a certain mindset. Joe comes in and he is a passionate guy and so is Coach Payton, but you know at the end of the day we had the foundation set. And Joe is doing a great job of continuing to do the things that we were doing when Coach Payton was here."
Saints linebacker Scott Shanle agreed.
