New Orleans Saints defensive end Junior Galette goes from long shot to the real deal

Galette first joined the Saints in 2010 as a long shot free agent out of Division II Stillman that defensive line coach Bill Johnson described at the time as "raw, raw, raw, raw." Galette's understanding of NFL schemes, his work ethic and his energizer-bunny personality needed seasoning.

Slowly but surely, the 24-year-old has developed into a bona-fide professional. His increased confidence and understanding of Xs and Os has been evident in conversations with the media. And on the field, he looks poised to deliver on that sleeper potential that has had Saints fans so excited for the past three years.

"I think that of all the years that I've been in the National Football League, I don't think I've ever seen anybody grow mentally and emotionally and stability-wise as much as Junior Galette in the last three years," Saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt said.

That may sound like hyperbole coming from a 34-year coaching veteran. But it may well be true with Galette.

After watching the Saints vs Pats game again today, and concentrating on the front 4 schemes and performances - Jordan actually was pretty impressing in creating pass rush, more so I'd say than Galette (vs 1st string O-line).

With the first string front 4, the Saints had Jordan-Ellis-Bunkley-Smith on the field for about 2/3 of the defensive plays, and they substituted Galette in for Bunkley for the rest 1/3 of plays where Jordan moved to interior as the LDT, Ellis slid right to the RDT spot, and Galette took the LDE spot. It was always this same sub and always for 1 play at a time.

Jordan almost made it to Brady on the throw he made to Lloyd on the right sideline, which Lloyd wasn't able to catch even though the ball was there and Marquis Johnson was a little late on the play. And he was right there to finish off Smith's sack on Brady, although the fumble was already in progress at that moment. It's really exciting to see that Jordan has been able to improve on his pass rush - or at least it seems that way in this point at the preseason - since he has never been a pass rushing DE even in college.

And, of course, I don't want to take anything away from Galette's performances, and I'm really glad we're finally beginning to see what the kids has potential to be. But more than that, it's nice to know that even if Smith is out for the first 4 games there'll still might be some guys left on the roster who'll be able to create some pass rush. Although, I'd feel a lot more relaxed about it if they had few more of them than they have at the moment.
