New Orleans Saints injury update: Chris Chamberlain, Andy Tanner and Isa Abdul-Quddus hurt

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints suffered a pair of injuries against the Jaguars that appear to be relatively serious. Backup linebacker Chris Chamberlain had to be helped from the field in the second quarter after he was felled by a left knee injury. He did not return.

http://media.nola.com/saints_impact/...0496-large.jpg

Later in the quarter, another Saints reserve vying for a roster spot, receiver Andy Tanner, was carted to the locker room after suffering a left ankle injury.

Also, backup safety Isa Abdul-Quddus, who had a third-quarter interception, left the game in the third quarter after suffering either a head or neck injury. He, too, did not return.

Chamberlain, who was signed this offseason as part of the Saints' linebacker overhaul, was battling in camp for one of the starting outside linebacker spots. He was injured when his knee buckled beneath him while trying to position himself to make a tackle on Jacksonville running back Montell Owens.

Tanner's injury occurred while he was attempting to block for his teammate Travaris Cadet, who had caught a screen pass. But Cadet crashed into the back of Tanner's leg, sending Tanner sprawling to the turf.

Tanner's injury is the latest to the backup Saints receiving corps. Two other players vying for the fourth receiver spot have been out due to injuries. Adrian Arrington had surgery on his knee last week, and Nick Toon has been out since suffering a foot injury in practice Aug. 2.

Also as expected, the seven players who missed the Saints' practice Thursday did not play against the Jaguars.

Running running back Darren Sproles (knee), cornerback Jabari Greer (sports hernia), defensive end Turk McBride (ankle), defensive tackle Tom Johnson (ankle), cornerback Kamaal McIlwain (groin), Arrington (knee) and Toon (foot) all missed the game.

Hope not!

Chamberlain at least was putting pressure on his leg when they helped him off the field.

Tanner's looked a little more serious

Chamberlain is the one that I hate to see injured more than the other two. Tanners position has more depth than LB'er does. Besides I had very high hopes for Chamberlain to nail down that third spot. I just hope that they all are back. On the bright side we can put Tanner on IR then we have him for next year and he can't be stolen off waivers.

If this is true, hopefully Lawrence Wilson makes the team in his place.

The Chamberlain injury really hurts. If nothing else it means we'll have to suffer through endless Scott Shanle hate posts again all season long.

Not necessarily; I think Cassillas has a chance at taking his spot... He has been playing really well...

What does that have to do with this injury thread?

The reserve linebacker tweeted the results of his MRI Saturday afternoon, saying, “Definitely been feeling the love of my friends, family and the #WHODATNATION! Unfortunately my season is over but working for 2013 begins!”

Casillas can't play SAM but Herring has been looking good at SAM. There is some hope for him to grab the start over Shanle but not much. One thing that Shanle does well is stay healthy, usually because he's nowhere near the play. Not saying I wish injury on anyone, because I never would, but would anyone be upset or disappointed if Shanle got injured? (lol)

No, because if he is starting that means there is nobody better behind him to take his place. He might be the smartest kid in the retard class type of thing.

Hawthorne plays WILL, Shanle starts at SAM with Herring as the back up. Casillas is in a battle with Hawthorne.

According to scouting reports done by PFF Shanle has been one of the worst starting LBs over the last 4 years. We have had people like Humber, Casillas and Dun-Bar who all have graded out better then him at every aspect of the game.

Then why don't we use them? I mean this team has proven they will start players based on talent rather than draft status, why wouldn't they bench a veteran for a younger player if he sucked?

Re: New Orleans Saints injury update: Chris Chamberlain, Andy Tanner and Isa Abdul-Quddus hurt

I'm not as disappointed as some people who seem to have believed Chris was going to be a starter, but it does suck for overall depth, and obviously you hate for a guy to lose a season... especially in a meaningless game.

Casillas has been enigmatic, but I think he was going to be, and now most certainly will be the other starter, along with Lofton and Hawthorne. I really thought Martez was going to challenge for a starting spot at outside LB until they moved him to DE. Chamberlain would have been quality depth.

Re: New Orleans Saints injury update: Chris Chamberlain, Andy Tanner and Isa Abdul-Quddus hurt

I for one am looking forward to seeing Shanle, Harper, Jenkins, and the front four play under Spagnulolo...

Then you'll know if it was scheme (Williams) or lack of talent...

Shanle has been no pro-bowler, but I think he takes way too much heat for the poor transition play of the safeties...

I hope Tanner gets well and makes the final 53.

I think Chamerlain was simply a Shanle clone, which isn't all bad.

Hawthorne is the one I have high hopes for. And of course Vilma getting his suspension overturned.

Ideally, my dream lineup at LB is...
Lofton - MLB
Hawthorne - SLB
Vilma - WLB

With Vilma suspended, its...
Lofton - MLB
Hawthorne - SLB
Casillas - WLB If he can stay healthy.

I agree. I viewed Chamberlain very much as another Shanle type who doesn't make big plays, but he always makes the play in front of him. I'm not crazy about Vilma at this stage of his career but if he is healthy and were not suspended I would feel more comfortable with him than Casillas. But Casillas has dynamic abilities, if he can put it all together, so here's hoping for the best. Shanle will probably see a lot of playing time even if he's not starting.
