Joe Vitt uneasy after Drew Brees takes some hits

For the Saints, a rough offseason would get a whole lot worse if quarterback Drew Brees went down with an injury. So Saints coach Joe Vitt wasn’t pleased when he saw Brees shaken up on Friday night against the Jaguars.

Yea I wasn't either. I guess its to be expected as we have almost totally replaced our offensive line over the past year. I hope they start operating at a unit soon, for Brees sake. I have seen him get way more pressure this preseason than I am used to seeing.

Graham just flat out missed the block, didn't even get a hand on Mincey I believe it was?

You are correct, it was Mincey

He should have just held him and taken the penalty

With a travel "beaten" team, a team that has basically been flying around the country for 3 weeks to practice and play footabll, I cannot believe and have expressed extreme disapproval with Brees playing most of the first half of last night's game.

NFL teams start their starting offense during the first half of the 3rd preseason game. That means Drew and company will probably play the entire first half of next week's game. Why play them most of the first half of the 2nd preseason game?

Vitt's insistence on playing offensive starters last night until practically halftime shows poor judgement. Sure, o-line should play... they should practice blocking and running game, etc. etc. But why would we risk injury to our most valuable player on the team is beyond me.

While I totally agree with you, every other team in the league has kept their starting QB in the game for the first half of the game this week. I think it was more about Brees competitiveness and wanting to stay in the game until he could get a good drive going than anything. Vitt needs to grow some balls and tell his starting QB no.

Losing 1 person doesn't mean we replaced our entire offense line...

NEVER, EVER let Brees play right after having a baby.

It is the kryptonite to Superman's game. Remember 2010 vs Cleveland in the Dome???

At least he did not get hurt and it was just a preseason game...

Center, Guard and Tackle. The only ones that are still there from 2010 are Jahri and Bushrod.

De La Puente is the center and he started all last season...

Just noticed you said 2010, why are we worried about 2010 again?

Someone else mentioned it, and I agree 1000%. The man and his wife just had a baby. Anybody who's been through that knows that it'll wear a couple out, and no offense to the ladies, but there's a lot of stress on the man too.

So that, coupled with the fact that Drew doesn't need an entire half of work, combined with what Halo said about being road-weary, Drew should have never even been on the field in my humble opinion.

He just got paid $100 million. his stress levels outside of football should be non existent. I know he is not worried about how he is going to pay for the hospital bill or if he can buy diapers before his next pay check

I'm guessing you don't have kids, man. Having a baby is a huge deal and if you haven't had one, or been close to someone who had one, then you don't know. You could have $1 or $100 million in the bank, it doesn't matter -- it is still one of the biggest, most stressful events that can happen in a person's life.

He gets paid(a lot) to play.

He's OK and the lineman should take a lesson from this that if you're the one that lets someone hurt Drew your career is over in New Orleans

He's not paid for preseason. Drew is a known quantity. He should get some work, but he shouldn't be risked when the bullets aren't real BECAUSE he gets paid a lot of money.

Still not concerned it's preseason. This is just fancy practice.

Preseason doesn't count... But it does matter, and protecting a 100m QB should be priority 1 regardless of whether its preseason, regular season, or if his hobbies include alligator wrestling.

i have 2 daughters. the thing that stresses me out the most is affording them once delivery has happened. kids under 15 dont stress me out. living in poverty does

Understatement of the pre-season so far. I can think of 100million reasons we were a little more than "uneasy" with that hit.

I have two daughters..... I never stressed.... It wasn't me passing a cantaloupe from my nether region.

My wife stressed... I was just a pillar of strength... again... knowing I was not going to have a small human crawling out of me actually gave me a little solace.

100 million should come with a personal assistant. The guy should follow him everywhere he goes, just to make sure his damn shoes are tied. Put that man in a bubble for christ sakes.... that's 100million getting the **** knocked out of him in preseason....

At 100 mil he cant have laces... Croc's would also protect his toes from being stubbed.

At 100 mil, his home is rebuilt just outside of the practice field and someone else peals his crawfish for him.

At 100 mil, someone chews his food as if he were a baby bird.

Re: Joe Vitt uneasy after Drew Brees takes some hits

Drew is known for his quck completion. But he is also known for holding the ball to the last second for the play to develop and then delivering a strike but getting knocked down in the process. He is going to take some hits. It's just the way he plays. He keeps him self fit so it hasn't been a factor.
However, he is 33 and the line needs to keep him upright if we want to keep him healthy.

People are going to come free and get shots at Brees just part of the game. Brees is going to have to be tough and I hope he is. He is going to take some hits just freaky about the shoulder.

Re: Joe Vitt uneasy after Drew Brees takes some hits

I happened to catch the rebroadcast of the 4th quarter of that game last night and Chase was getting some hits and ugly near-misses, too. Of course that was the bottom-of-the-barrel line at that point but still. He got popped a couple times earlier in the game as well, one of which I remember really dinged him up pretty good. Hope it's not an overall trend.

Yeah but not the Patriots. Brady isn't even playing.
Ryan Mallet starts tonight.
