Saints Linebackers Suffer Injuries and a Suspention

1 Attachment(s)
Beyond Chris Chamberlain's season-ending injury, New Orleans Saints MLB Curtis Lofton and WLB David Hawthorne both suffered injuries in the Saints preseason loss to the Jaguars on Friday night.
Quote:

Interim coach Joe Vitt said Monday that starting MLB Curtis Lofton suffered a high ankle sprain against the Jaguars, and starting WLB David Hawthorne suffered a meniscus injury that will require surgery.
Vitt also announced that Ramon Humber, brought in as a backup linebacker and slated as Lofton's replacement was suspended for failing a drug test.
Quote:

Then about an hour after Vitt spoke, Lofton's replacement, Ramon Humber, confirmed he has been suspended for the first three games for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

On the prognosis of both Lofton and Hawthorn, Vitt said today:
Quote:

Lofton will not play Saturday against the Texans, but Vitt says he thinks he will be ready for the regular season opener September 9.
Linebacker David Hawthorne:
Quote:

"the diagnosis on David is encouraging. He hurt it early in the game and played on it." Vitt said he thinks Hawthorne also has a good chance to be back in time for the regular season opener.

Man... Nobody ever tells us anything during the games. I never had a clue anything was wrong until today. I vote for the starters not to take another snap this preseason. This is just dumb at this point.

not surprising... Maybe they will be there in the reg season and maybe not. Who knows.

I hope our offense can score 75 points a game because or defense aint stopping ****. We seriously have no LBers worth a damn left. One of you guys who knows more about LB's around the league tell me who is out there that could possibly get cut is worth picking up.

The Bills released Shawn Merriman today. But we'd be better off bringing Ricky Jackson back than picking this guy up right now.

Vitt's saying Lofton and Hawthorn will return by opening day.
Chamberlain's injury is unfortunate.
Don't know anything about Humber.

And who do you replace? The only player we lost was Chamberlain.

Yeah, I think we might see the Saints bring in a cheap vet just in case these guys have problems recovering, but that's about it.

We picked up Humber off the street last year.

Re: Saints Linebackers Suffer Injuries and a Suspention

Lofton will not play opening day nor will Hawthorne, 6 to 8 weeks is the normal recovery time for a high ankle sprain so I would be happy to see Lofton by week 4. Hawthorne will end up missing 4 weeks and be back for week 2 hopefully. I would be shocked if we had both for opening day. We will need to move Wilson back to LB, and should look at bringing is Shawn Merriman or Joey Porter.

Agree with others in another thread, for all the poor tackling in the Jags game it appears the team, especially the defense, was gassed coming into that game. They flew to the HOF game, left that night with layover headed strait to Connecticut to practice with Pats. Half week of one-on-ones with the Pats then a Preseason game, they fly back to NOLA on a short week and play the Jags on Friday.

Including prep for HOF game, that puts them going straight since about the end of July. Today is the 20th of August.

Just a couple of days ago I thought we looked pretty good at LB'er.

A high ankle sprain can be a season-long injury that nags Lofton... He may be able to play come week 1 but will he be 100%?

Re: Saints Linebackers Suffer Injuries and a Suspention

You can play on a bum ankle. Tommy Meyers had a high ankle sprain for about twelve years.

We still have Casillas. IF he can stay healthy....

I also think if Merriman will take a paycut he's worth giving another look. Article says he been injured up to 10 games a year since '07. He's not worth 10 mill a year which is probably why the bills cut him.

We don't delete threads without some explaination.
I see the thread in the NFL forum http://blackandgold.com/nfl/48556-bi...-merriman.html
Sure you didn't start it there?
If they moved it they probably felt it not all Saints related. We have been having to move a LOT of threads lately, especially the Falcon related ones...

No biggie. You should check out the NFL forum.
Might be time to move your thread back here though. It's a valid question for sure.

i'm not seeing loftons ankle a biggie, he played on it guys, never excusing himself is a solid as i've see vilma play with injury. a tad slower but there leadership is as fast as any backer. lofton's not worried = i'm not either. picking up a backer now before there's none to get is loomis working it again. his magic i believe in.

Ankle sprain, 6-8 weeks for a regular human being, 1-3 weeks for a NFL player with a professional training staff behind him. I am not worried at all about that, not Hawthornes knee either.

And pleas lets stay away from Merriman, he is just downright horrible. I rather just see us pick up any scrub from the street.

Remember colston came back from a dislocated shoulder in 3 weeks due to the hyperbaric air chamber thing, hope lofton and hawthorne are using it

A high ankle sprain can ruin your season, just ask Pierre Thomas.
