1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints confirmed that offensive line coach/running game coach Aaron Kromer will take overhead coaching duties during Joe Vitt's six-game suspension to start the regular season. Here is the team's official release:

Metairie, La. - Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis has designated Offensive Line/Running Game Coach Aaron Kromer to replace Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers Joe Vitt during his absence.

Kromer, entering his fifth season with the Saints, brings 22 years of coaching experience to the coaching staff, the majority of it developing and tutoring offensive linemen. He has also been responsible for coordinating the rushing attack. He will officially take over the duties on Monday, September 3.

Solid choice. Probably the worst kept secret in weeks.

This lets Pete focus on playcalling, and Spags to run his defense without distraction.

Think it was a good choice, but would have rather they had just kept it under wraps until the last moment.

Everyone may have known, but the little bit of unknown was just enough to keep a people guessing

I thought there was a rule that all Oline coaches had to be old and fat.

No suprise there. I think most of us have known for quite a while that he'd be the choice. Pretty sure Sean even talked about it with all of his coaches and decided this before he started serving his suspension.

I don't know how it will affect his duties as line coach but he deserves the recognition.

He's a good coach.

Nobody will make them like Sean. That's the 1 glaring problem I see with the upcoming season, missing he magic man, SP. Let's hope Kromer sees this as an opportunity and makes us forget about suspensions.

6 is when the suspensions are over. Starting strong very well may be as important as finishing strong, sort of. Our first 6 games are VERY important as the remainder of the season is brutal. We lose too many of the first 6 games and it will be a long uphill battle the rest of the season. Winning early can give us the moral boost we need to have a strong showing against the teams later in the season. All Kromer has to do is coach us strong until Vitt gets back and we should be in good hands. If we manage to have a good season this year it very may well be the biggest success story ever in sports as far as overcoming adversity. We are about to see what our team is made of.

We gotta take this season one coach at a time. Might have 3

Kromer as the coach leaves Pete to focus strictly on the offense and Spags focused strictly on the defense...

Good choice, I am only afraid that we'll lose him in the near future.

You nailed it dead on. Lets say if the Saints have a solid year, maybe at least an appearance in the NFC Championship Game, I guarantee this current staff is going to get raided big time. Probably at least 4 potential head coaches right now on the staff. (Spags, Carmichael, Kromer, and Vitt).

This is something I've been thinking a lot about...Payton has a brilliant football mind. He's also got solid brass balls. But another major strength is that he is smart enough to surround himself with more-than-competent assistant coaches that he doesn't have to micro-manage. Losing Dennis Allen hurt our defense, no question. Look at how much better Denver's D was with Allen at the helm (It sure wasn't Timmy T that got them to the post-season), no wonder he got an HC job. If Kromer and Carmichael have already been pursued, this may be what gets them over the top, unfortunately for us. Vitt I'm not so worried about. He's older than the dirt the Saints practice on and if he were gonna get a head-guy job, he'd have it already.

Kromer and Carmichael yes, definitely. Vitt doesn't want (as of now at least) to leave or grab a HC job and the memory of the Rams is too fresh for Spagnolo.

Good choice, he just has to stick to the mantra, WHAT WOULD SEAN DO?

Re: Kromer will replace Vitt during absence...

Would you trade the raiding of assistant coaches for another Lombardi? Of course you would. The vibe I get is that Carmichael and Brees are not planning on going anywhere, so I don't worry about it until I actually read that Carmichael is on some other team's private airplane flying to a second interview.
