Your WORST "I Can't Believe It" moment with the Saints...

Look, folks... there are two main reasons why I do threads like this:

1. the regular season isn't here yet, and

2. the Saints are one of the top teams in the NFL, and bad memories are BEHIND us (for the most part).

With that, here's the question:

What is the worst moment in Saints history for a game, string of games, or a play in which you were utterly embarrassed ... or unbelievably UPSET?

Here are a few candidates. It will be interesting to see which one everyone here (at B&G.com) puts in the #1 slot:

Brooks' backwards pass:

Marshawn Lynch (BEAST):

John Carney miss AFTER River City Relay:

who knew there were so many worst moments. at first glance when i saw just the question i was thinking "this is a no brainer". then i saw the answers. im still undecided.lol

i ended up picking the 49ers comeback in 2011. only because its the most recent and still hurts the most.

So many in 2008, the year I thought we would turn into an elite team ( we did a year later )

Gramatica misses 40 yard field goal to win the game vs. vikes 2008, Vikings went back down and scored

Blowing a 15 point lead vs redskins in week 2 2008, lost that game

2007 winning vs bucs, reggie fumbles on a wide receiver reverse, bucs went down and won with 30 seconds left

It's damn good we are an elite team now, just writing those moments put me in a bad mood lol

Without a doubt it was the River city miracle and the missed extra point.

Sorry, but I stand corrected in a small detail. The Falcons' massacre of the Saints was 62-7 (...vice 61-7). And those "Dirty Birds" called a timeout late in the 4th quarter in an attempt to score EVEN MORE points! >:-(
62-7 reflects difference in past, present for Saints

I voted other, because you didn't have Ditka giving up 8!!! draft picks to get Ricky Williams in '99. ;-)

I chose "other", too. I wrote about this in another post: going 3-8 in 1993 after starting the season 5-0.

How do you start the season 5 & 0 and MISS THE PLAYOFFS? YES, MORA, I wanna talk about PLAYOFFS!

Well I was all poised to watch a comeback against Seattle when Lynch went all Earl Campbell on steriods on us. I'm still picking up pieces of my jaw off the floor.

I agree. That was such a heartbreaker. One of the most fantastic plays in NFL history kinda got nullified and Carney who has been so good for so long all of a sudden became a villain.

There's been a lot of bad moment but off the list l'm going with the Lynch run for couple of reasons. I'm not cooker so I invited all my boys over to my new house to watch the game. I've been amped all week talking s&$t and look what happen. I forget about the food it burns, second I get so mad I'm ripping planks of the fence in the back yard, third after the game I get drunk to easy the pain and I hit on my new next door neighbor and last after my gets on my ass the next day its raining and I have to go out in the rain and fix the fence.

Re: Your WORST "I Can't Believe It" moment with the Saints...

I was able to break down these options other than "Other" pretty easily.

1. Losing the last three games in 2002 hurt pretty bad, but it was then that I realized that Haslett was a complete moron by playing a hurt Aaron Brooks instead of a healthy Jake Delhomme.

2. I was three years old for the 21-point halftime letdown against the Raiders.

3. I wasn't even born for the Falcons blowout in Tulane Stadium.

4. I wasn't surprised about anything our defense DIDN'T DO against the Seahawks in the 2010 playoff game. They were horrendous all day long.

5. In 1983, I was seven years old and still a Steelers' fan, so I was unaware of anything the Saints were doing that year or anything outside of my Star Wars action figures.

6. Aaron Brooks made some many bonehead plays that nothing ever shocked me about the guy.

I was able to narrow this down to the Alex Smith TD run and Carney's missed extra point. While watching the Saints give up a run like that to the Bernie Kosar-esque Alex Smith was about as painful as having bamboo shoots jammed under your fingernails, it was just edged out by the most bi-polar moment in Saints' fans history when Carney botched the extra point. I guarantee every single Saints fan went from pure elation to absolutely rage faster than a Ferrari can go 0 to 60. It would take something MONSTROUSLY stupid for anything to replace that for me.

More like Sixty to ZERO! After that Graham TD, you just KNEW the Saints had the game in the bag.

But as you mentioned, our defense made Alex Smith look "All-World" that game!

I had to edit my original post to clarify that I chose the Carney play (or non-play, I should say) over the Alex Smith TD.

Re: Your WORST "I Can't Believe It" moment with the Saints...

I picked the Marshawn Lynch run. We has a great opportunity for a Two-Dat that year, and we literally let it slip through our hands on that one stupid play. Instead, that jack-ass Aaron Rodgers led the Packers to the Superbowl. I was angy for weeks. Hell, I'm still angry about that play.

Seer1 08-29-2012 07:45 PM

Re: Your WORST "I Can't Believe It" moment with the Saints...

I don't see it. We had no running game. The defense had been on the field for about eighty percent of the past six - seven games. Of course a running back, any running back was going to bust one loose sooner or later. The defense was gassed. I was really surprised that we'd made it that far that year. Now that %^*#^%@!!! run by Smith? The ONLY excuse for that was GW's unbelievably bad play calling. Smith walks backwards for a 28 yard touchdown while the entire Saints' defense is running toward the opposite side of the field on their 97th all out blitz of the game. And that was AFTER GW puts Shanle back alone in long distance coverage for a touchdown pass or two. I'm hoping Smith shared his playoff payoff for that game with Williams, he earned it. Damn, I need a Superbowl win to wash the taste of that play out of my mouth!

I was in high school for the MNF loss to the Raiders. I had a bet on the game with a friend of mine, even called him up at halftime to gloat. What a total disappointment that was. My memory might be wrong but I think Muncie fumbled 3 times in the 2nd half, deep in our own territory and thats what gave them the chance to comeback and beat us. If we had won that game we would have been in the playoffs for the first time.

With the history the Saints have we are full of I can't believe it moments. I was pretty much expect anything and nothing surprises me anymore. The score by Smith and the run by Lynch were sucky, but definitely not one of the biggest oh **** moments. Must be a lot of younguns voting. For me it was the river city relay. That was so amazing, but somehow I know when we lined up to kick the extra point we would miss it. God Im still pissed off about that.

They all suck, but I have hurt less from personal tragedies than I did for the River City Relay. It gets my vote.

Re: Your WORST "I Can't Believe It" moment with the Saints...

The day that I heard we were getting Steve Walsh and gave up a ton of draft picks was my lowest moment as a Saint fan. I admittedly am an Ole Miss homer, and thought John Fourcade was indeed Johnny B. Goode, and I was so pleased that Fourcade was finally going to get the chance he deserved.

Fourcade may have been the original guy that ESPN homed-in on during the draft that didn't get drafted...or the original "snub". His college coach made a comment prior to the draft that, IMO, made pro GM's shy away. He was a "black sheep" his whole NFL career.

Anyway...Mora announced that he would be the starter that year, and Hebert took his football and went home. Fourcade got 3 games as the starter before Mora threw in the towel and mortgaged the farm for noodle arm.

The missed extra point was definitely the worst from history, because I remember watching it. But overall we had a great chance to make it to our second super bowl and win our first on the road playoff victory, all we had to do was stop Alex Smith (ALEX G.D. SMITH!!) for less than a minute, and we couldn't do it. I absolutely could NOT believe it.

Re: Your WORST "I Can't Believe It" moment with the Saints...

So far, no one has picked the Mike Lansford FG in the poll.

I guess I understand why... maybe. It was back in 1983, and many Saints fans weren't following the team (or even born) back then.

But for those who remember, the stage was set when Bum Phillips didn't trust Morten Andersen to make a 50 yd field goal. Morten would have iced the game, and the Saints would have been in the playoffs.

The late sportscaster Wayne Mack recounted: "That was the day Bum quit coaching. When the man John Mecom brought in to lead the team to the promised land fell short, Mecom decided to sell the team. And Bum Phillips lost his fire and motivation."

All water under the bridge, I guess!

Anyway, I'm glad we have the current team, FO and leadership!!!!!

Re: Your WORST "I Can't Believe It" moment with the Saints...

I will go about this a different way...

I cannot go with the missed extra point, because I am of the opinion that the extra point was missed on purpose!

I remember that I knew at the time the extra point was being attempted that we were already eliminated from playoff contention. The fact that we missed the extra point meant that they got to go home instead of playing an overtime that had no significance in the playoff race. Someone could've got hurt, too.

Missing the extra point put us higher in the next year's draft, so that is why, after considering all of what I just said, I believe the kick was missed intentionally.

I am beginning to believe that I am not remembering that correctly, because if I am correct, then missing that extra point was actually a smart move...not the darkest moment.

Having been a Saints fan for as long as I have, I don't know that things like giving tons of draft picks for 1 player, or missing a field goal, or a bone headed play qualify as worst moment as a Saints fan.

As a Saints fan, I think the worst I have ever felt watching the Saints play, was the Saints-Giants game after 9/11/2001. The first NFL game after the attack, playing NY at NY. I just wanted the Giants to win that game so bad...

That is exactly what I was thinking.... seems like just yesterday GREGG WILLIAMS was calling the most rediculous, predictable blitzes and got our asses handed to us with less than a minute left on the clock... ALEX SMITH looked like the white MIKE VICK out there... I'm getting depressed just thinking about it....

True, but the initial question was: Your WORST "I Can't Believe It" moment with the Saints?

So, it was not about the worst moment as a Saints' fan as you stated... an event related to the Saints that shocked you when it took place was my interpretation of the question at hand.

The thread is about an "I can't believe it moment"... to me, nothing better defines that phrase than the missed EP after the River City Relay. It was one of those moments where you were so elated you could hardly breathe, and then in a matter of seconds, the complete opposite reaction. I was watching the game with my brother and he actually said right after the TD: "Watch, Carney will miss the extra point."

I will say that the 2002 collapse was filled with those "I can't believe it" moments, especially losing to that god awful Bungles team. My goodness that was the essence of our old Saints' kick you in the crotch moments.

I voted other. I think being the first team to lose to the "NEW" cleveland Browns on a last second Tim Couch hailmary was pretty low. Cleveland lost by 31 the week before and by 32 the week after. They came into the Superdome with a roster of Tim Couch, Kareem Abdual Jabbar, Kevin Johnson, Leslie Shepard and Terry Kirby and beat the Great Billy Joe Boys. Ricky Williams 180 yards were not enough. That was a pretty sad moment.

The Saint have way more heartbreaking losses than memorable wins unfortunately. It's no so much the losing, it's the manner in which it went down for the most part. Who misses an extra point after moving the ball 80yards in one of the greatest plays of all time. Ditka also had a couple of serious brain dead clock management gafs. Anything else is before my time but I know there are too many to count of seriously bad football.

I don't know if this has been mentioned but it was a pretty sad day when I heard that Archie had been traded to Houston. It was not so much that we were parting ways with him, but more the way the FO handled it. If I remember right, I recall Archie saying something like, "I heard it from someone on the streets."
