Saints cut Matt Tennant

Source confirms that #Saints have released C/G Matt Tennant. One of the day's surprises.

Surprising indeed.

And that means Eric Olsen makes #Saints roster as backup C/G, source confirms. Mild surprise but Olsen a very good young lineman.
Didn't see that one coming at all.

I was high on this kid... oh well. The opportunity was there, he just didn't seize it.

I'd heard he was a decent center, but he wasn't very good at guard. We needed a back-up that could play all 3 interior spots. Apparently DLP could and now Olsen can as well

Dang. They keep the players they like drafted or not. Can't argue with their results.

Canfield did NOT make 53 .. Saints to release
Full 53 @8:00p

Wow, especially after they were talking about him being a starter not so long ago

Wow, Who's the back up center?

We always yo-yo our 3rd QB with #53 on the final and PS roster-- check last year's transactions- every week Tanner and Canfield were cut and signed

Now he's with the Patriots.

Re: Saints cut Matt Tennant

It was pretty apparent, when he didn't get the nod at center after Kreutz "retired" last season, that he hadn't really developed the way they had anticipated earlier when he was projected to be a future starting center.

So, while it's in a way sad to see him cut, I'm glad he is going to have the opportunity to fight for a starting job at another team.

Hokie said he was told by the Saints front office that the reason DLP was more valuable to them was because DLP could play all 3 interior spots, while Tennant could only play center.

They weren't diasppointed in his play at Center as much as his lack of being able to play LG or RG.

Homecoming for Tenant

Always feels like you have made a mistake when the Pats pick up one of your players. Unless that player is Sullivan.

OK, but I still think that they weren't really all that impressed with him since, if you remember, he was touted as the mantle bearer for Goodwin at the start of last preseason, but he didn't really perform well by the accounts I remember, and then they brought in Kreutz when that became possible after his negotiations with the Bears broke down.

Kreutz couldn't play any other position than center, and one could argue against that statement as well, but they were happy enough to give Kreutz the nod as the starting center over Tennant - to me that says something.

But, the versatility point does make a lot of sense when roster spots are at a premium.

Are you referring to Ninkovich, among others? :-)

You have to multi task now a days. You just can't play center you have to play the whole line.

The LB corps as it stands now is:

Casillas
Hawthorne
Herring
Lofton
Ruud
Shanle

Ezra Butler is on the practice squad.

Chamberlain is on the injured reserve.

And, Ramon Humber and Jonathan Vilma are on the reserve/suspended list. Humber won't be eligible to play until week 3 if I remember correctly because of violating the league drug policies or something to that nature.

Kadarron Anderson and Lawrence Wilson were two LBs they cut for the final 53 and didn't re-claim for the practice squad.

I can live with that. Thats a better unit than last years.

Also keep in mind if our offense clicks like it did lastyear, you'll see a ton of 2 LB sets as we go to our nickel defenses against teams forced to play catch up.

Agreed, it is a better group of players than last year, especially with Vilma's injuries.

Herring is another guy from whom we can expect a lot more than we saw last year, he is supposedly a good cover LB and might be very valuable in those 2 LB sets you referred to.

Gregory Gibson Jr.‏@srevolution

So the Patriots already cut former #Saints Matt Tennant. Once highly thought of, I have a feeling he never fully healed from an injury.

Now, they can slide him on their practice squad. I think that's what the Saints were hoping to do. I wish the Saints would claim him, cut one of the FB's, and after a day cut him again. Then, sign him to the practice squad. To heck with the Patriots.

Unfortunately Tennant's not eligible for the practice squad anymore.

Better Line-backing Corps than last year and a hell of a lot better defensive strategy... If our D-backs can preform and stay healthy it will be a great season..

Looking forward to seeing ALL of the starters on the field for the Super Bowl.

I don't know about breakout, but I think he's a better fit for Spags scheme than he was in Greggs scheme.

He's now playing the strong side which may be a better fit for him as well.

Doh! So if a player is picked up by another team, even if they're cut, they can't go on ANY other team's practice squad or just the team that initially cut them?

Not doubting, just ignorant

Two seasons in the NFL is all you get. There are some exceptions and qualifiers but Tennant doesn't meet them.

I know it used to be only 2 seasons of PS eligibility and/or X number of games on the active roster, with exceptions being related to injury.

Tennant was in the active roster for 12 games last season, so he isn't eligible based on that alone - a player can't be in the active roster for 6 or more games in the previous season (with the current team) in order to be eligible for the team's practice squad.

At least that is how I remember it...

Thanks for the clarification gents

Really too bad about Tennant, hopefully the guy we've got now proves to be teachable. Can't get much better of an O-line coach than Kromer. Dude has absolutely nothing to prove anymore about how to make a great unit, so if he says Tennant had to go I definitely respect his opinion

I think it had a lot to do with Olsen impressing than Tennant being a bust.

Kromer had nice things to say about his assistant O-line coach - Frank Smith - in the recent press conference, so hopefully Smith will be able to carry on Kromer's great work if/when Kromer gets a shot at being a HC with some team.

New Orleans Saints: Frank Smith
