'Free Payton' plane to buzz NYC before NFL opener

The Saints fan behind the "Free Payton" banner seen flying above Saints training camp last month has apparently raised enough money to take his message to the home of NFL headquarters.

Philip Marshall is among many Who Dat Nation citizens who think NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell went overboard with his suspensions of Sean Payton, General Manager Mickey Loomis, Joe Vitt and players Jonathan Vilma and Will Smith. With the help of donations he solicited through his website, freepayton.org, he raised enough money to have the banner flown above New York and New Jersey this afternoon.

According to a release, the plane will circle the Statue of Liberty around 4:00 p.m. this afternoon (New Orleans time), proceed over the Hudson River, flying over pre-game activities in Manhattan, and then above the stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey before tonight's kickoff.

Have located several references to the flight yesterday, but nothing on ANY of the "mainstream media" sites. I guess the persistance of a group of NFL fans is not really news in their opinion - after all the garbage they put out about the Saints, Coaches, and players.

They will definately report on the Appeal ruling and Judge orders though.

I did locate one short reference on the WWL site.

I found several references on other fan sites, but nothing to really keep the situation on the Front Burner.

Something tells me Goodell hangs on for another year (to not look like he got ran off) and then moves on to spend more time with the family...


I know the franchise's fingerprints can't be on it, but it would be great if every time Goodell set foot in the Dome that it was free "Free Sean Payton t-shirt" night.

Seer's right -- it actually would be really nice for during the Super Bowl to get more of those "Do Not Serve This Man" signs up and hanging around in bars and businesses Downtown and the Quarter, maybe put them on some telephone poles on Poydras the day before the game, along Bourbon Street, in the windows of all the T-shirt shops, on Canal, all the businesses people pass as people walk to the Dome, etc. Put them in places where the media or someone Goodell knows personally, will SEE them and again and again, and tell him about it. A nice guerrilla campaign of that might actually be even more effective than the billboard!
