A look at the NFC South...

There are two funny things about the NFC South this year- Carolina could improve and not win the division (because it\'s ours for the taking) and Tampa Bay could finish as the worst team. If Vick stays healthy, Atlanta will win their fair share, and the Saints are going to smash all three. Now, if Vick gets hurt, then the Falcons will be last, but c\'est la vie. I know I won\'t be crying.

Stop me if you\'ve heard this one before...
I may have posted this in another thread, sorry if a repeat...

NFC South a Power division?

Weren\'t we the only division in the entire NFL to have only 1 team with a winning record?

We were the weakest division in football last year.

Atlanta? One man (Vick) is gonna account for a 6 game turn around? On a team with the worst defense in the NFL? On a team with a new coaching staff? On a team thats one more injury to their QB from being 5-11? A team that replaced every DB on the team? Hmmm... I just don\'t see them improving 6 whole games. I see 7-9. Maybe 9-7 if Vick stays healthy for 16 and their defense jells fast enough but its not likely.

Carolina- Pardon my skepticism but here\'s a team that was flat out lucky in 4 or 5 of their games. The NFL officialy apologized to us for blown calls that led DIRECTLY to a Panther win. Steven Davis was injury free for about the 1st time in his career. Now everyone will be shooting for them. I honestly don\'t think throwing the ball up for grabs in the final minutes is gonna win them 4 or 5 games again in 2004. I see 7-9 or 8-8 for this squad.

Tampa Bay-I\'ll never count out Monte Kiffin but this team looks like a re-build job. They still have that cocky swagger that other teams remember so I don\'t think you\'ll see teams let up on these dudes. I think they\'ll do better than Atlanta and Carolina but still hover around 8-8. If Gruden is half as good as advertised they may go 9-7.

New Orleans- This is a team that has no glaring weaknesses on their roster. One of the most talented teams top to bottom in the league. But they are still VERY young (except at CB) and the coaching staff has proven they can drive a beat up Honda (1999) but has yet to prove they can drive a Porsche. If Parcells had this team they\'d consistently be 12-4. But there\'s only one Parcells. But without a massive re-vamp, and without the massive injuries we had last year, I can see this team easily winning 9 games. especially with their schedule. Its not nearly as tough as some make it out to be.

The Falcons have never had back to back winning seasons in their franchise history...

Vick will be healthy, they have Mora Jr running things now, and their new offensive line coach is notorious for ending defensive linemans\' seasons (careers). That coupled with that inhuman monster named Vick is enough to scare me, emphasized by our suspect linebacking corps. So I wouldn\'t be that surprised if Atlanta busted out 10-6 and stole the division from us.

I\'ve never forgotten those ridiculous Bartkowski last second time expired hail mary TD\'s for victories. Nor have I ever forgiven them for it. So until our defensive coordinator shows me something to brag about (as opposed to something to cry about) I will continue to be nervous of Atlanta.

Until Michael Vick can prove to me and the rest of the NFL world that he can be a pocket passer, no one can tell me that he\'s an NFL GOD! Too many people get caught up in his hype, yet most of the games the Falcons won in his first year as starter were due to his LEGS, not his arm. If Vick stays in the pocket more, look for him to have AB type numbers in his first couple of years as a starter. He will most likely throw a ton of interceptions. He also has to prove that he can stay healthy. I stated last year that Michael Vick was one blindside shot from a full speed free safety away from being a pocket-passer. A similar scenario happened, and what do they want to do with him? Make him a pocket passer!!!!!! Who would\'ve thought it? Oh, yeah. I thought of it, and I\'m sure many others thought the same thing. Vick still has a lot to prove.

Legs, arms, butt cheeks... I don\'t care. Name a guy who has singlehandedly won more games for his team in the last TWO years (and he only played in 4 games last year). You can\'t. Vick singlehandedly took an otherwise untalented and undisciplined Atlanta team to the playoff and made history in Lambeau two years ago. Even the great Peyton Manning isn\'t that good.

Vick has one of the best arms in the NFL frm what I\'ve seen. True, he does need to improve in th pocket to become a better passer in the NFL, but if I were Atlanta, I wouldn\'t do that. Michael Vick is nothing special if Atlanta does to Vick wha the Saints did to Brooks. I like what Brooks has done to his pocket game, but I hate that he has ZERO skills outside of it now. Vick is an X factor in every game and that has EVERYTHING to do with his legs. If they take that away from him, he will be average, they will be average, and the NFL will lose the most exciting runner since Barry Sanders, and maybe ever. Vick\'s pocket game should improve, but I would\'t do it at the cost of his running ability. That\'s just my opinion.

Well, you pretty much laid out for everyone why just about every NFL fan around realizes that Atlanta can\'t allow Vick to continue to \"tuck and run\" every time he can\'t find his primary receiver, as he\'s always done. Makes for a mighty short career, with a whole lot of missed games in it.

Vick had 117 yards passing and 64 yards rushing against the Packers in that game. Sounds like someone else must have been sticking a \"hand\" into the win for Atlanta. Ahman Green, Donald Driver, and Terry Glenn failed to play the second half for Green Bay.

No offense, but what exactly have you seen to support that? Those Powerade and video game commercials? I have no doubt he has a strong arm, but I\'ve yet to see any evidence of accuracy. In the games I\'ve seen him play, most of his passing yardage comes on plays that he\'s extended by scrambling around, buying time, and one of the receivers finally shakes coverage and finds himself with noone within fifteen yards. A heave in the general direction is all it takes. The remarkable part is done with the legs, not with the arm.

Of course everyone\'s entitled to their opinion. Mine is that, playing his current style of play, Michael Vick can be healthy enough to do it for about two more years. After that, he would need to try to make the transition to being a passer, which he\'ll have delayed for a couple of years.

Why does everyone want to change a player that is one of the most dynamic in college and NFL history? His injury didn\'t come from a \"blindside full speed safety hit\", it came from a strange tackle that rolled his foot underneath him. That kind of thing happens sometimes, its risk that every player on the field has to take. It happened to Ricky in his first season and nobody said he should take it easier.

Vick does most of his magic tricks with his legs, and if he buys more time for his receivers to get open by scrambling a little, so be it. Would it be better if he were Kurt Warner and had the movement of a GI Joe action figure with a kung fu grip? Look at what\'s happened to him lately.
