PFT Today’s ruling means nothing to Payton, Vitt, Loomis, Williams

Today’s ruling means nothing to Payton, Vitt, Loomis, Williams | ProFootballTalk
Perhaps the most common question raised in the wake of today’s ruling from the internal appeals panel scuttling the bounty suspensions and sending the process back to Commissioner Roger Goodell (and square one) is whether it will affect the suspensions imposed on non-players, like Saints coach Sean Payton.

The quick answer? No.

Payton, Saints interim coach Joe Vitt, Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis, and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams were not disciplined within the confines of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and the players. The player protections come from the fact that they have a union that has negotiated a comprehensive and detailed labor deal. Non-players are protected only by the terms of their employment contracts — which simply don’t include the kind of provisions that helped the players in this specific case.

For non-players, every dispute on every issue goes back to the league office for resolution. So while the CBA has given the players new life (for now), the non-players continue to be suspended, with no hope for any change in their status.

Thats pooters. Don't see why if it can be proven that nothing was done intentinally to harm anyone. I think this is where a judges ruling would open the door for the coach's to bring up legal action if they felt inclined to. Maybe go back to the Komissar and have a new conversation.

Albert Breer said the same thing on the NFL Network. They have already went through the appeals process, so they are S.O.L.

Schefter (sp) on ESPN (yes, I had to go see if they even reported it) said he is almost certain Sean would pursue "some sort of legal action".

I guess we'll see.

That was about 15 minutes ago; The coaches will have to pursue legal action against the NFL/Roger so that may take awhile...

It just makes sense that if the coaches are guilty and punished for facilitating something that can't be proven, they should also not be penalized. And the hearing should be rushed given the timing and circumstances.

Players punishment was vacated because Goodell was out side of his jurisdiction according to the CBA...

REMEMBER TWO THINGS:
Coaches are not part of the CBA.
Sean Payton already admitted to it and apologized.

The audio of GW may be what screws the coaches

If all coaches are held accountable for their underlings behavior then why the Hell can't the owner be held responsible?(in no way am I implying anything about Benson) My point is where the Hell do you draw the line???
Bring back the coaches. Give them a heavy fine and be done with it. Acts of mercy are generally looked favorably upon. And Der Kommisar could use some good PR about right now.

Did he? I recall Williams admitting to a pay-for-performance system, which we all know is different, but I do not recall Payton admitting to anything.

Exactly! Sean didn't admit to a bounty program. He admitted that there was a pay for performance system in place. As far as I'm concerned if the players are practically exonerated of having a "bounty program" then it's freaking absurd that Payton should still suffer. God the NFL is such a joke nowadays... Thanks Herr Goddell.

Re: PFT Today’s ruling means nothing to Payton, Vitt, Loomis, Williams

On paper "there is nothing to be done" but something tells me that ol' Tom Benson is already working the phones on this, lobbying to Goodell and the other 31 owners, and to the media, behind the scenes. I think that whatever happened at the meeting between Goodell and Benson in New York back a few weeks ago, becomes more important now. I'm convinced that something happened at that meeting. The NFL said that "owners meet personally with Goodell all the time, it was just routine" but the Saints clearly WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY to let the world and the sports media know that Benson was up there, lobbying, they wanted it reported in the press, that those two were talking and Benson was making his case and putting the screws on Goodell. And I think the information in the Freeh report (which right now only Benson has access to) somehow plays into this.

PS Just for people who are discussing it -- correct, Sean Payton didn't EVER admit to a pay for performance system. He admitted that he was "sorry for what has happened" and that it happened on his watch, which is a completely different thing from actually admitting to a "pay to injure" or "pay for performance." "Sorry for what happened" means sorry for the scandal that happened on his watch, for not "respecting our great game and the shield" which he also talked about. Only GW admitted to a pay-for-performance program that "got out of control."

Aww come on bro. You starting to sound like the haters on random blogs. Re-post him and Mickey's apology again. In no way shape or form do they apologize for a Bounty/Pay for performance charge. They apologized for letting anything happen under there watch. NOTHING specific!

Look at the recent comments by SP. It is killing him not being able to let the TRUTH come out but he is handcuffed by twinkle nuts. I want him back as much as any who dat but feel it would be better for him to just take a vacation for the year and come back next year with a vengence.

"These are serious violations and we understand the negative impact it has had on our game, Both of us have made it clear within our organization that this will never happen again, and make that same promise to the NFL and most importantly to all of our fans. We acknowledge that the violations disclosed by the NFL during their investigation of our club happened under our watch. We take full responsibility,"

- Joint statement issued by Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton.
