Re-Focused: Redskins @ Saints, Week 1

New Orleans – Three Performances of Note

Improved Run D

While Saints fans won’t be happy with the outcome against the Redskins, the Saints performance in run defense might be a small consolation. Perhaps motivated by Ryan Kerrigan’s strong day, second year defensive end Cam Jordan followed up his strong rookie campaign with a +6.8 grade in run defense. Primarily working against Polumbus -6.9 (run block), Jordan totaled a mammoth nine stops in 41 run snaps, good for a 22.% Run Stop Percentage. He generally overwhelmed Polumbus and any tight end that attempted to block him in the run game.

In the middle of the defense, newcomers Brodrick Bunkley and Curtis Lofton each made sure their presence was felt. Lining up almost exclusively at DRT, Bunkley dominated Redskins left guard Lichtensteiger and made four stops while constantly standing up or pushing offensive players into the backfield. Meanwhile Lofton showed Saints fans something they haven’t seen in a while; a linebacker who could get off blocks.

The other big addition at linebacker, David Hawthorne, was much less impressive, displaying his worst performance of the past three seasons. He struggled to get off blocks and make any impact in the passing game, ending up with a -4.2 grade. A missed tackle on the late three yard touchdown run by Alfred Morris adequately captured his play throughout the game.

Struggling Secondary

Even without Jabari Greer, the Saints secondary was primed for success facing a rookie quarterback at home. However, the game didn’t go as planned: only corners Johnny Patrick and Jerome Murphy graded positively in the secondary and they combined for only 38 snaps.

The safety position, manned by Roman Harper (-3.3) and Malcolm Jenkins (-2.4), continues to be a problem for the Saints, even under a new defensive coordinator. Neither player recorded a pass defense, while both were often late getting up field on Griffin’s quick throws. Harper, who last season led all safeties in sacks and was a staple in Gregg Williams’ blitzes, rushed fewer times than Jenkins against Washington and lined up at the deep safety spot three times more than the SS position where he has excelled. He’s looking more and more out of place by the game.

On the outside, Corey White allowed a reception on each of his five targets, including a red zone touchdown while Patrick Robinson was targeted six times, allowing three receptions for 56 yards, including a big reception after he gambled trying to jump the route. There were bright spots, though, as he almost came down with a leaping interception and added a sack and pressure on blitzes, but his subpar day was indicative of the problems New Orleans were having in their secondary.

Replacing Meachem

Over the course of the season, we’ll find out how much of an impact the loss of Robert Meachem will have on the Saints offense. If Week 1 is any indication, it will indeed be felt. Marques Colston (-2.1), usually a highly reliable target for Drew Brees, had only four catches in 10 targets, with two dropped passes and a potentially game-changing red zone fumble late in the first half. Speedster Joe Morgan also played poorly, failing to bring in either of his two targets as the Saints lacked the depth to rotate their receiving weapons. Lance Moore and Jimmy Graham were the only bright spots in an unimpressive passing display as the Saints struggled to find their rhythm.

Improved run D? 153 yards surrendered. Improved run D?

I was trying to remember a play when Harper was soooo out of position as he was with the 88 yard TD play. The D had to account for RG3 running at any point also. We will see how they adjust for Cam Newton this week.

Not that I have anything negative to say about Harper, I thought he actually was a plus on the D yesterday in most other aspects.

I can't remember the exact detail of the Garcon touchdown, but was he picked or screened from making a tackle?

Yes, that was on the CB (Robinson) or maybe 24 (White), not Harper. Harper was blocked legally on that crossing pattern by #15, Jenkins was blitzing. Perfect play call against that blitz.

Or as some other experts I respect have mentioned, our LB's didn't drop into coverage well at all, leaving the middle wide open most of the day. Thats what Vilma excelled at.

Thanks Danno, I was at the game and hadn't seen the replay yet, seemed like he was pretty shallow to me to start with however.

I never thought I would miss Meachump.lol:bugeyes:
He did develop nicely after a rough start with dropped passes.

Who do we have/pursue now that Devery is going to be down for a bit?

Seems we're a bit predictable when they don't have to worry about us going long to Meach, and I don't know if Morgan is as fast as Meach was

Joe Morgan looked awful but it was his first real NFL game. I think we should give him time. I sure wish AA weren't so brittle. Sigh.

If you look at the Garcon touchdown, Harper was held from at least making a tackle to the point of where it would of never turned into a 80+ yard play.

I dont know if Harper was covering Garcon, Harper was most certainly held on that play from making a play.

It should of been a Offensive PI or Holding Penalty.

Why not go after Terrell Ownes, or Chad Johnson? Its a shot in the dark but what else do we have to lose? After each of them were denied a team in preseason they are hungry.

Because they are cancers in the locker-room... They will hurt team morale and ***** when Drew doesn't make them the primary target

Possibly, but they could also be like Moss and screw there heads back on straight. 4 receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown. Just sayin....I suggested Moss when he was visiting our team and everybody said the same thing, but now we are going to have to try and cover him on 11/25. Why not bring them in, and if they are a cancer they will get cut, but if they are even a fraction of the players they used to be....CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

and that is why we're not the coaches, they know just a little bit more than the fan base.

Offense? They scored 40 pts on us and we were still in the game until the last heave. The Offense certainly had some problems but not enough to say it was a concerning factor.

Have you thought about WHY the sea hawks and dolphins cut them?

Both players were "meh" in the preseason. They're not a fraction of their old selves. The risk is worse than the reward(especially when the reward is highly unlikely with them). The patriots already tried with Johnson anyway.

The fact that Chad Johnson started becoming cancer before the season even started doesn't help either.

The 49ers and Moss is completely different. That was a team that had zero receivers and a meh offense. They would have tried to get a monkey to receive if they could. Moss brought them up because the 9ers had no leadership on offense. We're already in position to have a great offense.

I'd also like some WR's that can catch, some tackles that can block, some LB's that can cover short routes, and some leaders chewing some ass for playing like poop.
