Is Officiating this season ruining the NFL?

We see our defense is terrible, 2 games running already.

But I cant help but think after the poor play, the Saints should of still won those games, each loss has been attributed to some type of big foul up on the officiating.

Last week we saw 14 points put on the board Vs Washington due to 1 non call, and 1 stupid call.

Both involving Roman Harper, in which we saw no flag thrown on holding which prevented Harper from making a play on Garcon, and then the 2nd one was PI on Harper in the end zone. Final Score: 40-32 for a difference of a full TD of 6 pts when you see 14 gifted to Washington.

FFWD

This week we got Scam Newton, and what do I see? about 3 plays in the game where Intentional Grounding was never called.

2 of them was throwing the ball to the side lines still in the pocket but ball never reached the LOS. I cant remember the other one, but I think it was in the same way but he threw it into the ground.

OH.........But they call Drew Brees for it when he at least had a eligible WR in the area.

Then you got the bogus PI called for Steve Smith running into Robinson.......So Robinson gets called for it.

What was point swing? Its a guessing game, but you can believe 14 of their points was handed to them.

Final score............35-27 for a difference of 8 pts.

This is just 2 of the Saints games played, this garbage is going in every NFL game, the only ones who really got no right to complain is the ones dominating the scoreboard and winning by 21+ pts.

Oddly enough, seems you need to be winning by 21+ pts to make up for the Officiating.

If our defense forced someone to punt once in a while then this wouldn't even be an issue, but we can't even force a 3 and out, never mind a turnover

lee909 09-17-2012 04:59 AM

Terrible calls in the Rams game when Jackson had a TD not called.
Terrible call that Vick fumbled when it was a obvious pass in the last two mins aswell, luckily it was rechecked in the booth and overturned.

So under the Commissar we have had a player and officials lock out.
The sooner they lock him out the bettet

Defense is doing us no favors.

But its the idea in the end, officiating can be looked at as to why we lost when you see how many pts its put up for the opposing team.

Tbh it's only slightly worse than the professional refs.... They're aren't much better.

Can't blame these two losses on the refs. We are not playing good ball.

I think we could have had pop warner ref's and still would have lost. Defense 's system/personnel is new, overall effort is weak, there is no fire, no sense of urgency. What we need is a good Payton tirade, not better ref's.

Re: Is Officiating this season ruining the NFL?

The first loss against the 'skins, we had some questionable calls. The only time Harper has ever had spot on coverage and he gets called for a phantom PI

But every team is having to deal with these refs, so it's really not fair to blame them for a loss...

Re: Is Officiating this season ruining the NFL?

Nope. Officials have always made bad calls, it's just that the replacement refs are under the microscope by everyone and their mistakes are magnified. Remember the coin toss flop when everyone on TV heard what the call was but the ref still got it wrong. Can't blame everything on the replacements. yes they are making mistakes but the real ones did too.

I keep blogging that if safety and integrity were such a factor, then why the beat down on the Saints and why the inconsistent application of practice with the officiating?

Re: Is Officiating this season ruining the NFL?

The replacements have made some significantly worse calls than the normal refs, but not on the stuff like False Starts and PI, all refs make questionable calls like those all the time. The bad calls are giving the Redskins a 9 yard first down last week, giving the Seahawks and the Rams 4 timeouts and upholding the spot of the ball after Rex Ryan challenged a fumble call and the tape showed Issac Redman down in the backfield.

The replacement refs also definitely have problems with calling pass interference and contact, and it's not just Harper and the Saints, it's league wide. If the league wants to change the rules of the game, what can and can't be done on a passing play, they should just say so.

Re: Is Officiating this season ruining the NFL?

The missed calls and inconsistencies are consistant in every game, so both teams are having to deal with the replacements refs calls. It is not benifiting or penalizing either team more than the other.

OK, after watching the game last night I have to change my opinion. Twice they walked off the wrong yardage on penalties and missed a fumble recovery when the Broncos came out of the pile with the ball. They almost lost total control of the game. Looked a lot one sided in their calls. Ticky tack PI on defense yet some receivers got away with push offs.

It didn't have anything to do with OUR team losing... but you can't sit here and tell me this past week in football wasn't the THE WORST officiated football week ever. With the worst of them being yesterday on the ONE night everybody and they mama watches NFL football...complete and utter failure is what the NFL is continuing to display. I mean yeah the regular officials screw up...their human. But they also have been throughly trained for YEARS and actually KNOW THE RULES and knows how to mediate and control players.....its unacceptable...No matter if the Saints are victim of it or not.

Re: Is Officiating this season ruining the NFL?

Yeah I was concerned about the push-offs, because Atlanta does that ALL THE FREAKING TIME. They will ride that pony as long as the league lets them get away with it. There were also a lot of illegal picks in the Lions/49ers game the other night that were not getting called -- it was like you could see the Niners were like, "okay, they're not calling it, we are gonna do this all day until the refs make us stop." Early in the game you could see the Niners would sorta look around guiltily for a flag on the ground after they did a pick on somebody, then when they didn't get called for it, they just went to town with it.

Re: Is Officiating this season ruining the NFL?

My comments are unrelated to the calls in Saints games specifically. In watching any game so far the officials have been inconsistent, erroneous, nervous making calls and calling teams the wrong name or unable to remember the team name. It's bush league and just one more thing Goodell is ignoring that jeopardizes the integrity of the game. And like everything else he will likely continue to half ass deal with it in an incompitent manner.

Re: Is Officiating this season ruining the NFL?

The fact of the matter is the officials DO matter. They are professionals just as the players and the coaches are professionals - on the highest level of the sport, and anything less is a watered-down product.

We know first hand of the calls that have gone against us. Perhaps one even cost us the Washington game? Maybe. Maybe not. But that's the rub. It's the "maybe". The game is not the same - it isn't on the up and up, without professionals reffing the games.

As I've said many times already, the league is going straight to hell under Roger's leadership. His entire body of work as commissioner is a farce and a slap in the face to those of us who follow the game.

Re: Is Officiating this season ruining the NFL?

Anybody who says that the replacement officials aren't affecting the outcome of the games needs to talk to Jake Locker and the Titans -- who separated his shoulder making a tackle, on a fumble return that was not a fumble and should have been blown dead long before his injury. Locker left the game with his injury and the Titans went on to lose. He is wearing a brace now because of it. That play was an OBVIOUS incomplete pass and should have never been happening. Fairly serious injury.... So much for player safety.

I was thinking the same thing after reading your original post Buds. The game last night was a total embarrasment and a total officiating failure. The Broncos and the Failcons both had their fair share of bad calls.

Even the networks are noting the failures each week. After week one, I saw on TV (I cant remember which one, ESPN I think) the "Top 5 Worst Officiating Calls of the Week". I didn't see it this week. I'm sure RG shut it down immediately.

Now, I'm not blaming the Refs for our losses, far from that. But I do believe we are under a much heavier officiating thumb than the rest of the league.

That Falcons game was brutally called. It was nearly impossible to sit through, and not just because the Falcons were winning. The refs were god awful and everything took forever.

However, the refs aren't ruining the NFL. Roger Goodell's punk ass is. This is just a part of his work.

JMO... The regular officials made just as many bad calls, but they made them faster.

TheOak 09-18-2012 01:12 PM

I completely disagree that the scabs are doing ok.

They are horrendous, THE DON'T KNOW THE RULES.

Last nights fumble in the Denver/Atlanta game is a perfect example.

They also CAN NOT CONTROL THE PLAYERS OR COACHES.

Those guys have to go.

It's also an integrity issue. No red should ever tell a player
"hey, I have you on my fantasy team"!
