Are we just spoiled as fans?

We had a lot of adversity this off-season and it trickled into the regular season.
We are playing without a head coach and some of our Defensive leaders.
Sean Payton didn't have time to game scheme, we have no idea if interim coaching staff know how to properly game-plan and from the looks of the season thus-far that might not be too far from the truth..

We'll be gettin Vitt Back soon and im sure he's being in alot of communication with Sean Payton, he's going to have a lot of detail to give to these players when he gets back on top of that Loomis will be calling lack-luster players into his office and that will certainly be lighting fire under asses, right now we have players that are skating on easy street right now and show no discipline, they did ok tonight but we rank at the bottom of everything right now.

As a fan i did expect the Players and the leaders to hold their own and win the games we all know this team can win and hold on to leads it critical portions of the game, but i realized only a real Head Coach could have kept the players heads in this game, the bogus mistakes we've had would have not constantly continued under regular circumstances.

I guess i figured we could have coasted a bit until we got some sense of normality back, i fear this season is about to turn into one of the worse seasons in decades for us.

I guess i can handle the heckling from rivals until next season.. everybody know's we are playing with a disabled staff this season, i think we are the best 0-4 team in the NFL in a long time, thats what i've been pretty much putting my mindset at nowadays.

All good points. With Payton we could likely be 4-0. I know our O-line would get its ass in gear and the drops would definitely stop, the play calling would improve.

Missing Sean Payton is reason number 1 that we're 0-4 right now, IMO.

Wouldn't Sean get in huge trouble for talking to Vitt or Loomis, since they are coming back from suspension sooner? I'm sure Roger would be happy to lay the smack down again.

No way are winless with Payton here coaching. No way. We are almost winning games with a third string coach. We are basically coach less. Payton's not the reason we drop a lot of passes but the whole moral when your winning has got to be different.

Remember, Sean Payton marched the Saints to 0-6 in 2007 before the team got their first win. And the previous year we went deep into the playoffs too, NFCCG.

I do agree we almost won with a third string coach, but props goes out to Kromer. The Saints were competitive, were in strong position to win the game and the Packers are no slouch. We drop games with SP too and could have lost that game the same had he been here.

Though Drew was seriously in the game and Kromer put a fire under the o-line because they played so much better then in previous weeks.

The Saints looked like the Saints today.

I don't have any facts on this but didn't it feel like we had less drops when Curtis Johnson was the WR coach?

Absolutely. I have no facts to support it either other than we're currently dead last in the NFL with the most drops.

I guess that we should just suck it like the Jags fans or the KC fans. Wonder if you think we're looking up at the Jets?

spoiled?????? lmao you want spoiled move up here to new england were i am. then you will understand spoiled.

as saints fans we are not spoiled

I think SP has a lot to do with but i also look at the coaching staff we have lost in the past 3 years. that is a big part of the problem right there.

The saints coaching staff has been gutted and it shows

ahh i remember way back when so many here were just wee little pups or just a glimmer in their parents eyes. We saints fans were sitting in the dome cheering on the paper airplanes.

how about the time espn gave saints fans the crown for the most knowledgeable fans in football when it came to special teams? Thats all we had was a punter. oh those were the days. oh by the way the coffin corner kick is the most deadly weapon a punter can have. shame it is a lost art

oh baby us old dogs can go on and on and on.

Milk gets spoiled!
Without SP we knew this wasn't going to be easy.
Everything in it's place I think we had a sense of confidence.

I wish I could remember how many times I've seen this thread start over the past 6 years, every time the team has adversity. I may be a jerk, but I'm a consistent jerk. I criticize things, that I see are a problem, because I don't have a taste for losing guys. I'm sorry. But you can't say I'm acting any different than I normally do in this situation. My question is equally as important as all of yours I guess. Why are you still surprised by people reacting this way?

I'm 22 and I remember heartbreak. I wasn't there for the early years, but I've felt the pain.

Although I really would've liked to see the paper airplanes.

sure he would. The losing part sucked, yes... but 50,000
paper airplanes was a pretty crazy sight.... The announcement always came
first," Please do not throw "missiles" or objects onto the field..." Then we'd
start losing the game. Then the airplanes came. I'd be watching the game with someone who didnt know Saints football, and have to explain
why there was cheering during a huddle. Because somewhere an airplane
has made it onto the actual field of play... I remember Hebert about to call a play, heard the crowd, leaned over to watch a plane land at his feet.

Re: Are we just spoiled as fans?

There is a silver lining in every cloud...and the silver lining here is that if the Saints don't make it to the playoffs, then they won't be in the SB. That would mean that people from 2 different cities will be flying into NO and spending their money. I don't think it would be as great a windfall for the city if one of the participants was NO.

When the team is so bad that paper airplanes get louder cheers than first downs...it's bad.
I've been a season ticket holder for 12 consecutive years..and prior to that I bought them occasionally, so I may have been a season tix holder for around 15 or more years total...

I've seen every coach they've had come and go, seen every player come and go, heard every excuse under the sun for 45 years.
..and even learned a few things about football in those many years. contrary to what coach mora said..Some of us DO know what we're talking about...and not just the older fans..lots of younger fans also know what they're talking about, too.
The point is, bad football is bad football..rose colored glasses..sugar coated excuses and "if only..." just doesn't cut it.

I'm 47 and have endured some absolutely horrible Saint teams over the years, at some point I thought they would never win consistently. These past few years have just been great, damn near unbelievable for me.
Are some fans spoiled to all the success as of the past few years probably yes but for the older guys, I can only say it's been a dream come true.
Don't forget about the bag days

Saint_LB 10-07-2012 09:46 AM

Re: Are we just spoiled as fans?

I'm definitely not spoiled as whatever happens this year will be, in the end, just another year. I haven't written it off, yet, but if it does end out of the money it will just be another, "Oh well, wait 'til next year"...and we've gotten very good at doing that. With a SB win under our belt, it really is very easy to live with disappointment these days...at least for me.

OldMaid 10-07-2012 12:52 PM

Re: Are we just spoiled as fans?

I agree with Joker.
I do not think old Saints fans are spolied with the teams recent years of huge success and that SB win thing.
All teams have to rebuild. It happens. SF49's? CBears? Raiders? DCowboys? Other teams. Sometimes the great years take a long time to come back around or, it seems, not again at all.
These current Saints and coaching staff have about two years max, imo, before rebuilding.
This year is costly and gives them one year less before rebuilding years.

Whatever, still a Saints fan here, was in bad times, the best of times, will be in future bad times.:bng:

Did anyone ever take the time to explain the reason for all the airplanes?

I guess I shouldn't try to speak for everyone...and it has been quite some time since I was at the dome and tried my hand at it...but it seems to me that the pleasure derived from throwing the airplanes comes from seeing how well you can fold one. For every plane that you see flying across the field, there are probably dozens that don't make it 10 feet.

The planes usually didn't start flying until the game got out of hand...or boring...and launching a paper plane that catches the attention of the crowd can be quite thrilling.

Spoiled might not be the word I would use.

"out of touch with reality"... Would better fit.

Our defense has been ****ty consistently for all but 1 of the last 7 years. Should be used to it.

Thank you LB, you are 100% right. I didnt even think that some people dont even know why. Also, yes, it actually is a very difficult engineering job to fashion a paper/cardboard/game program plane that can actually reach the field. Just as people have died thinking they could jump to a pool from a balcony, because of the optical illusion, it is also hard to judge how far you really are horizontally from the field. So when
probably 95% of guys tried to throw a plane, it might go 10 or 20 feet, and crash into someone innocent's head. But when 20,000 people joined the derby, 5% planes would actually have the aerodynamics to float any distance. Just reaching the sidelines required masterful work, and even good ones couldnt do it. An occasional winner could make the field of play, which
required supreme mastery. So when the greatest of the great paper aircraft finally penetrated into mid-field, well, a stadium wide salute seemed in order. Which is why tv viewers might wonder why such a loud cheer was happening, during garbage time, during a huddle. Now you know.

Next up, we will discuss good and bad confetti throwing.
