Spags were is Martez Wilson ????

ok i just read the post about Harper playing WLB for the saints due to injuries.

Whats wrong with Martez Wilson?

Is he a liability in coverage?

Is he a liability against the run?

Is he doing so well at DE we dare not move him?

Is he so bad at OLB we he is not worth developing?

Is he little more than a standout special team player ?

WTH is it?

Ok maybe it is time to stop playing around with the guy and pick a spot were he can grow into pro football player. so far the DE experiment has kept him of the field and in my opinion limiting his development.

Heck why not mess with his development some more and play him at SS?

Sorry i think this is a complete waste of potential talent that is better served at OLB with spot duty at DE

I want answers!

Re: Spags were is Martez Wilson ????

Shanle has GOT to go. As a person he is a great guy, but as an OLB he is weak.

Now to answer your question, Wilson is best used attacking the QB. Since we don't blitz in the Spags D he is best utilized as a DE but may be too small to get off the block. The way a player gets around this is by his first step, and since Wilson has played LB his whole career he may be having trouble coming out of his stance.

Re: Spags were is Martez Wilson ????

5 tackles to date? sorry failure and with injuries at wlb it makes no sense. with Wilson at OLB you can now blitz and at times let him play a stand up DE that can rush or drop back into his natural position makes more sense. heck move him all alone the line and make teams account for him

Bam, Thank You, Hagan...

This is what I've been asking...

I'm tired of drafting guys for depth and "situational plays" - either they can play or not...

Younger players should be seeing a majority of snaps with the more seasoned guys put in for "situational plays"...

If I were a reporter I'd ask each week how is Martez Wilson progressing? will he see more snaps next week? what are his liabilities?

Compare this...

Will Smith, 6-3, 282lbs, 31yrs

Martez Wilson, 6-4, 252 lbs, 23yrs

Junior Galette has done anything in three years but proven to be a third down pass rusher and has produced pedestrian numbers at best...

And if Wilson is unable to process and develop as a player then we've reach a point where a hard look at the front office and defensive scouting dept needs to be made...

Personally, we've reached that point a looong time ago. When was the last time we have had a baller on D? With as many first round picks there is on D, there lack of production is unacceptable. There needs to be a change made.

Well if there's one thing Spags knows its D-linemen. Wilson must be having some difficulty grasping his offense.

He'll come around.

I think he played some DE in high school. Still, LB'er is his natural position. Spags needs to get him on the field and let him do his thing.

ok back to the point. why harper over wilson at lb?

Hell put Shanle on the already ineffective D-line, at least he won't get in anyones way.

Not a bad idea. SInce he spends most of his time lying down on the field, this would give him some good opportunities to try and trip the rb's. :)

Shanle can't tackle, he can't cover and he can't rush. The best place for Shanle is on the bench. That is where he can do the most good. I agree. Put Wilson in, take Shanle out.

We had a discussion a while back in another thread about how Shanle isn't great, or smart, but he's the one of the best and smartest we have.

So seriously folks, if Scott Shanle is the best that our FO can bring in for three years, and he's been on the team for six, then its time for them to take a long look in the mirror for where the problems are

Martez Wilson is a late 3rd round draft pick that's been hyped since the day he was drafted as some sort of super hero. Maybe he just isn't that good.

That may be but he can't be any worse than Shanle, and at least he's fast.

Agree with every word except the bold. Shanle is an extremely smart player and will likely go on and become a coach.

I remember a player (or coach) 2 years ago comment that a lot of times Shanle will see someone out of position on a play and runs to where the broken assignment is, often too late. People mistake that as Shanle was slow and out of position when in fact he knew the other player blew his assignment and tried to help out, but couldn't get there in time.

Shanle may be the smartest player we have on defense.

Re: Spags were is Martez Wilson ????

Martez is focused on learning to play DE... and he'll do a great job in given time. When our coaches are back next season things will get a lot better. He played MLB in college and now he's a DE... asking him to abandon that and now play WLB wouldn't solve a damn thing. He'd be completely lost. Let's just let the kid develop where he is and I have faith that he'll be a damn fine pass-rushing DE in the near future.

Because we had a healthy linebacking corp at the time. And Lofton.

The reason he's been hyped is because he was a first round talent who dropped because of health concerns. He was raw even in college, but made a lot of tackles and big plays. He has a size and speed combination that really isn't paralleled, even in this league. Physically he's a freak.

The problem is that he was barely given a chance to play last year, and this year he had to learn a new system AND switch positions. I'd hoped it would work out a little better, but I am not surprised he's taking slow to it. At this point though, his speed needs to be on the field regardless of how out of position he may be. There is nothing to lose by trying.

Re: Spags were is Martez Wilson ????

Martez is getting plenty of time on the field. These past 2 games I've seen multiple snaps where we were using Spag's Nascar package with Martez and Gallette at DE and Smith and Jordan inside at DT. It's just a matter of Martez learning how to play DE as the season goes along.

In preseason he had monster game at De. I don't know why we didn't try him there during regular season.

JoLonn didn't do well outside here, but had pretty good grades at MLB, but since we had Vilma and Lofton there was no sense in paying good money for a 3rd stinger, even if he's almost as good as our starters.

I always liked him, just as I always like Usama Young. They played better than many gave them credit for and are the types of players I admire on and off the field.

I'm a big fan of Jo Lonn Dunbar. There were quite a few of us that liked him here too at MLB, but not OLB. I'm surprised to see him doing so well outside. I honestly didn't see that coming.

Our D line and LB have been poor for..I don't know..EVER. At what point do we think maybe it's not the players but maybe it's the person coaching the players? Whats the constant in this scenario?

I'll tell you why - it's the play of their interior defensive linemen; if you want to see good linebackers neutralized - put schiotty defensive line play in front of them and kah-put, no more linebacker play...

Martez is too stupid to make it onto the field. Do people honestly think that the best players are not playing?!?!?!

Re: Spags were is Martez Wilson ????

In 1990, the Saints drafted Renaldo Turnbull to match opposite Wayne Martin...

Jim Mora had one of the most legendary man-crushes I've ever seen...

It was embarrassing - Mora was as bad as Ralphie stroking off the Major Award, Fragile' Leg Lamp in Christmas Story...

The guy was a physical marvel, but it never translated to the field...

I worry that we don't have the coach/coaches on defense that can find this guy a way to maximize his potential...

Or worse, he's a total 'tard and that we may simply have to tell him like the Hulk "Smash Man With Ball"...

Hagan is write - B&G needs to put up a permanent, dynamic list of radio/TV talk shows schedule so that we can hit these "call-ins" early, often with questions like

"Why isn't Martez Wilson on the field more?"

"Why did we draft him in the third round if we aren't going to play him?"

"Did he in fact play his balls off and causing him to be "debacled"?!? (See Emmett Smith's Colloquial Dictionary for Dummies)

The pieces in the car, are worn and run down. But the car still runs and you refuse to take it to a mechanic because until it breaks fully it's no use in wasting what miles it has left.

^^^^ Saints Defense...... Before the Super Bowl season both Fujita and Shanle were on the chopping block, they have lived with Shanle for way too long. You can now add Will Smith to the list of parts that needs to be replaced.

As far as Wilson. Even converted he is the best player on the D - Line there is no way he should come off the field. I think he would have been better served if Greg Romeus would have stayed healthy and battled will smith for the other DE spot.

Romeus if someway ever overcomes his injurys could be the player to lead the D to a higher standand, I just don't know if his body will let it happen. The Saints coaches know what they may get and if this was any other player he would be gone, Romeus has the drive in him that is rare.

You nailed it. It also applies to our CB's and our Safeties as well.

It all starts upfront.

It also applies to our run game on offense. We have O-linemen that are a lot better at pass blocking than run blocking.

We desperately need a pass rush. I want to see more of Hicks though. Ellis is playing like garbage and Hicks' size/speed ratio really intrigues me.

This comment would be given a million likes if that was possible

Looks like spags read the board, as much as I hate collinsworth, he called that Tez would end the game with the sack and he did

Fantastic play, keep the young guys on the D line, it's the least they deserve for a great closing performance tonight

The same D that had 6 total sacks all season, got 5 tonight!

Wilson played well against a gimpy lineman, I'd like to see the same pressure while facing a healthy guy. All the props in the world for his effort though, I hope he keeps improving a the season progresses.
