Saints release LB Barrett Ruud, re-sign CB Elbert Mack

METAIRIE, La. – The Saints have released veteran middle linebacker Barrett Ruud and re-signed cornerback Elbert Mack.

Ruud, 29, came to the Saints late in preseason when the team was short on linebackers with Curtis Lofton, David Hawthorne and Chris Chamberlain out with injuries.

But Lofton and Hawthorne returned by the season opener and Ruud was never used in defensive situations, seeing the field only on special teams the past three weeks.

The Saints traded an undisclosed draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 20.

Mack, meanwhile, has been on and off the Saints roster throughout the season. He was in camp with New Orleans before being a casualty of final cuts.

He re-signed with New Orleans on Sept. 18. He then was released on Oct. 3 after the team re-signed receiver Greg Camarillo.

He'll be back, and re-cut, then back...

With Greer hurt I'm sure they need some CB depth. And to be honest, we can probably find mediocre LB's easy, hell we have a roster full of them already.

I watched Denver play the other night and man, porter looks bad

Toss play to the left, it was one on one, porter vs RB, porter sticks his arms out and the RB just ran straight round him for a 15 yard gain

Our CB's might be ailing, but once they are healthy it will be okay

Porter would not make any difference to our defense. He hadn't made a difference to our defense since 2009.

Why did we trade for guy if we going to release him a couple weeks later

It was an unconditional pick, if the guy makes no impact or even gets released i don't think we have to give the team anything

can someone clarify that for me?
