Drew Brees' record-breaking TD pass was a play Chase Daniel knew would work

New Orleans Saints quarterbacks Drew Brees and Chase Daniel knew they had a shot play in the extensive playbook that could easily result in a Saints touchdown if Brees saw the right look from the San Diego Chargers defense.

Daniel said Monday afternoon when he and Brees first watched film of San Diego leading up to Sunday's 31-24 win over the Chargers that Devery Henderson could take advantage of one-on-one coverage on the outside in a manageable third-down situation.

"When we turned on the film, that was one of the first plays me and Drew were like, 'We HAVE to call this play,'" Daniel said. "Did we know it was going to be the play that set the record? No. But we knew if we got the right look and called it at the right time, we felt like it would be a touchdown."

Johnny Unitas

To congratulate Brees on tying the record, Johnny Unitas’ son, Joe Unitas sent Brees this letter:

October 2, 2012

Drew Brees

Drew,

I wanted to take a minute to congratulate you on tying my father’s record for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass. I’ve been follow your pursuit of the record since last season. I’m a big fan of yours, and wish you the best Sunday night against San Diego as you try to break the record. My father always said that records were meant to be broken. I know that if he was still with us that he would wish you the best as well.

When I look back on my father’s life I remember a man who was much bigger than the game of football. The things he would appreciate most about you have nothing to do with football; it’s about who you are as a person. You’re a role model for today’s youth, a family man, and a humanitarian who cares for his community. My father would tell you these are the important things in life, not some record in a book.

Continue to be a leader for your team and the City of New Orleans. You’re a great quarterback but even better man. Stay healthy and safe this week and in the future. My family and I will be watching Sunday night cheering for you. Best of luck.

Sincerely,

Joe Unitas

Man, I really like Chase. I hope we trade him and get some good value and he gets to go start somewhere.

I wish we could keep him but he's a piece that isn't needed and we could use some good personnel we could make a hard strong run for the Super Bowl next year.

Though I'm not sure how well our QB3 could perform lol

I think Chase's value to our roster is not appreciated because Drew hasn't been injured since he has been with the Saints. We already roll the dice by only keeping 2 QB's on the gameday roster.

It's a good idea to keep a solid backup that knows the offense on your roster.

Totally agree

Theres a reason chase has never been cut;

He comes out slinging every preseason
The coaching staff see him as a good backup QB
The only person that knows the offense better than him is the guy above him in the depth chart
He has a good football mind, he and drew are always studying film and pictures together
In training camp they constantly push eachother because chase and drew get really competitive and make eachother play better

Like halo said, who else would you want as a backup other than the guy who knows the offense like the back of his hand

Do you think it will ever be Chase Daniel's team?

Thanks Chase.. I called that a week ago. Stop reading my posts and claiming brilliance.

Chase is the perfect BU for the Saints. I am no where convinced he is a starting QB for us or anywhere else... Neither is the league or he would have been snatched from us already.

It's hard to say. Anything could happen. Drew could get hurt and Chase play (God forbid) and he could shine. He could get attention from other teams and the Saints either sign him or let him go. Or he could stay with the Saints until the end of his career and get a chance to start... or maybe not. We'll have to see.

For now, it's a mistake to not have someone on the roster who is familiar with our offense and talented enough to backup that familiarity.
