What will the Return of Sean Payton bring?

I am not going to speculate on an early return. So for the sake of this discussion lets go the 2013 season.

Sean has already commented on how he is getting a different perspective watching the games from home. He has an awful lot of time to him self and he does not strike me as the type to just watch infomercials all day.

For a while we were doing what not many other teams could or did do, now it seems the league is catching up.

Will 2013 bring an entirely new Saints Offense? Team vision?

Why isn't "Fire and brimstone" an option in the poll?

He won't drastically alter his game planning. He just has some fresh ideas.

I think we need to completely rework our game plan and execution. It is too predictable at this point, and he is seeing that as he watches. New personnel groupings along with some new personnel job descriptions.

Hopefully the Sprags Defense will be good to go. Draft a few defensive people are pretty much I'd say he'll have some ideas he'd like to try. I don't expect anything to drastic from him in 13

A record better then 1-4.

Re: What will the Return of Sean Payton bring?

Well...sorry for the tl;dr here, but I said this a day or two ago, buried at the end of a thread about Mark Ingram that was already kinda dying or dead horse, but it's kind of on the same subject as this really.

I have been watching how people this year are saying up in New England, there's this whole thing going on up there this year, like OMG THE PATRIOTS ARE SUDDENLY A RUNNING TEAM, LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS RUN THE BALL, JUST WHEN THE WHOLE LEAGUE GOES "PASS HAPPY" THE PATRIOTS START RUNNING THE ROCK AGAIN, THE GENIUS OF BELLICHICK, HE'S DONE IT AGAIN, etc. etc. Like this is a story line that is about to happen, or is happening.

Payton and Bellichick are extremely similar mentally, the whole chess match part of it, and they have the same approach to innovations in the game (for example, they seem to have simultaneously re-invented the concept of the freakishly tall and superhuman tight end, at almost the same exact moment). They think alike. And Bellichick is now running all over these defenses up East, that are coming to the game freaked out about stopping Brady and the Patriots passing attack, right now.

And I find myself wondering if Payton might have had something like that in mind, up his sleeve, when he re-upped Pierre's contract and brought Ingram and then Grubbs in. As an evolution to Payton's game, or the NEXT thing the Saints were gonna do, once Drew was locked in long-term and had broken every passing record in sight.

Figuring that once people (especially division teams) adjusted their defenses to our ABSURDLY PROLIFIC passing attack, I wonder if Payton was gonna hit them with the change up -- suddenly when the defenses in our division are literally being BUILT and coordinators being hired to stop our RIDONKULOUS passing game, the Saints would morph and become a power running team, heavy running, with the ever-present threat of burning you with the pass...as some other people have said in various "run the damn ball" threads, the Payton/Carmichael/Brees offense is almost TOO GOOD, and now we need to learn to burn more clock, to keep our perennially crappy defense OFF the field a little more....

But then I feel like maybe Payton didn't get to implement or finish this idea before he left, so he just sorta tabled the whole thing until next year. And now we're sort of stuck in this limbo, with (a) the weird 2 yard running play for Ingram that goes nowhere and doesn't work, and (b) what looks like the same exact offensive playbook from the record passing streak late last year. But this CAN'T be what Payton had in mind, can it?

I dunno, this is all just a pet theory of mine. But the Grubbs-for-Nicks thing really made me wonder. Because talking to some Baltimore fans I know, Grubbs was sort of known in Baltimore for opening gaping holes for Ray Rice, the team was riding Grubbs' run blocks all the way deep into the playoffs, year after year. You lose a great passing blocker to free agency and bring in a great running blocker in his place. Makes me wonder.

Sean Paytons return will light a fire under any under performing players a$$, knowing that the big man will take no nonsense!
That is what a lot of our team needs at the minute, someone that they can't afford to disappoint like Sean payton

Everyone agrees that its almost an impossibility that Saints are 1-4 if SP is coaching. I think thats the most important thing for fans to remember.
This is SP's team. He built it , changes it, and runs it.
And this is what it will be like when he leaves. The importance, strategy, and mind set of Payton working with Loomis has been completely underplayed.

You don't remove Lombardi from the Packers, and you cant remove SP from the Saints. Players and interim coaches can not do what he brings to the table.
This has taught me a very valuable lesson. We must retain Sean Payton after his 2015 contract ends. There are very very few great minds in football, and he is one.
Dallas and many other teams will be gunning for him, so we better pay him what he wants, or our chances of better, are slim to none, and years of coach transition.

Re: What will the Return of Sean Payton bring?

I doubt he'll change his overall mentality when it comes to playcalling and game planning, but he'll undoubtedly have a "new bag of tricks" next season, resulting from all of the free time that's been forced upon him.

I think, or should I say I hope, this sabbatical will in the end prove to be beneficial to his career as a football coach, and maybe it'll allow him to take a step to the next level - and I for one can't even imagine what a higher level of him would/could be in reality... scary for the opponents for sure. :-)

Re: What will the Return of Sean Payton bring?

I see a running game playing a different part. I actually see him changing a crap load.

As a coach he only gets one Sunday a season to watch and see what EVERYONE else is doing... He can now watch ALL of that.

I also see a bunch of personnel changes coming.

Re: What will the Return of Sean Payton bring?

I think next year will be a time where we'll see older players getting phased out. Smith and Ellis on DL, maybe Henderson at WR (thou I love the guy). I think the job of finding Brees real replacement will start. I'm also anticipating an offensive shift to the running game, less comitte and more of one guy.

Re: What will the Return of Sean Payton bring?

Easy, 7 to 14 more points per game. Take a look back at the losses none of them were blow outs. He gives you an extra offensive possesion, and possibly one less defensive possesion by tell the d coordinator what he sees and who he wants nullified.

I agree with most of what you said, but, this almost makes it sound like losing Nicks and getting Grubbs was planned. I think if the Saints had their way, Nicks is still on the team. They lost the best Guard in Free Agency and brought in the next best guard.

Juicy Fruit!!

Secondary to that, I'd guess he will put more of an emphasis on the run game. It looked to me that was what he was doing before his unplanned vacation. Last season the Saints were 6th in rushing yards. I don't think there will be major changes but more of a commitment to running the ball than we are seeing now.

You could strap the Space Shuttle rockets under Smith/Shanle and it will not matter.

Mario Andretti cant win on a burro.

I think you're right SaintsBro but that wouldn't really be new. People get so mesmerized by the spectacular passing game that they forget we were sixth in the league in rushing.
