Right Tackle Help?!? - Bears Release Former First Round Pick

Bears release former first-rounder Chris Williams | ProFootballTalk

The Bears released their former first round pick at left tackle Chris Williams...

Per some scouting I've read, he may have been 'miscast' and is better suited as a right tackle - you think he could offer something at right tackle better than what we have?!?

Your point is valid, but the question between the lines is would he make a better right tackle for the Saints?

In addition, factor in the Saints penchant for developing offensive lineman as of late, is he a valid reclamation project?!?

Strief has played admirably, but he's more of a great utility lineman; and Charles Brown has been "other bust from USC"...

What could it hurt to take a look?

Williams is a Louisiana son, but he has been plagued with injuries. Maybe getting back to a warmer climate will work for him. I would look.

Guess it wouldn't hurt to take a look at his guy, but I am seriously not sure he is worth bringing along. I guess he could compete for a utility role with the Saints, maybe???

The question would be better suited saying "who could it hurt to take a look" and the answer to that question is drew brees lol

After watching Cutler get pounded harder than Jenna Jameson I am quite sceptical about bringing anybody in from the Bears O-line. But give the guy a workout and see what he can do.

I'm a big fan of athletes going home to rejuvinate an ailing career, home-cooking does the body & soul good. I believe he played more games for the Bears at LG/RT then he did at LT which indicates to me he could add some depth and maybe develop into a starter.

At first look, I don't really know what his injury issues are, but he showed somebody something once enough to be a first round pick. Put him in there with the Saints current O/Line to bring him along & you wind up with a diamond-in-the-rough, IMO ... but do you really need help on the O/L or are there more pressing needs?

Mickey Loomis would know what to do ... @#$& Goodell!

I don't know him, but if he actually played in that Bears game against us in the Dome, with 8 gazillion sacks on Cutler, then no. I kinda don't want any part of that hot mess on my team, LOL. As much as people wish and want Streif or Bushrod to be gone, I don't think this guy could replace anybody starting at either tackle right now, just because he wouldn't know the playbook or the schemes or anything and it would be a HUGE risk to take. Even more of a huge risk than changing centers after the Kreutz Experiment, which took the line a couple of games to find their sea legs again. Unfortunately it's better the devil you know, than the one you don't, when it comes to protecting your $100 Million Dollar Man. Now as backup, I don't know. Maybe. This Eric Olson cat we have right now, seems like a multi use plug-in type dude, which may make him valuable to us.

Remember the last time we tried to give a O-Lineman from the Bears a shot.............I'll pass...

BRING HIM IN?!?!?!?! are you f'ing kidding me!!!! A mid season cut and you want to bring him in. What makes you think that this guy is remotely good enough to start on a top 5 offense. He wasnt even good enough to keep around as a 3rd stringer and you want to bring him in. Im so sick of everytime someone gets cut everyone thinks that he would help this team out.

If he can't protect Cutler I sure as hell don't want him protecting Drew.

The Bearz.offensive line is probably the worst in the history of the NFL. No.

I am absolutely shocked nobody has said the standard "he could be a good pickup for the minimum" line yet in this thread.

its just flat out ridiculous that everytime someone is cut there is a thread on here about picking this guy up or lets bring him in for a look. we arent the cleveland browns we dont have to throw $h!t at the wall and see if anything sticks. We have probowl offensive lineman vs a guy who was let go during week 6 of the nfl season. im betting both of my nuts that he would not make the scout team

I can't really remember how he has performed in the Bears' games I've seen, but like others have already stated, that Bears' O-line hasn't been good for several seasons.

Now, it could be that their O-line coaching just sucks, because they've had some pretty promising prospects play on that O-line without real success, and I seem to recall that they've tried to play those guys in multiple variations of position duties... and it really hasn't worked out in any of those variations.

If Kromer would see him a worthwhile guy to take a closer look at, then I'd be all for it, but my gut says that he wouldn't really be able to contribute in any meaningful way - at least during this season.

Still, Strief needs to be a backup and not a starter at RT!

So if he doesn't make the scout team, what did the Saints lose? The plane ticket and hotel room for the try out? Charles Brown has looked flat out terrible the few times we've seen him play. The Saints depth at the tackle spot is pretty thin.

If someone is cut midseason from a position group that is among the worst in the league has no shot at making this team. Has he shown you some qualities that are really appealing to you and that you think will help this team excel? Have you scouted this talent? My guess is no. My gut feeling is if he is not good enough to play on one of the bottom five o lines even as a back up then I wouldn't want him. It's clock work, every time someone is let go people think THEY see something in this person that professional coaches and scouts do not. He wasn't cut because he is good. I don't think that anyone has ever been cut because their play was too good for the team.
Researchers...can you find the last person cut midseason that turned their career around at that point.

No, I haven't scouted him myself. As a matter of fact, I couldn't pick him out of a line up. And your gut feeling is most likely correct, being cut from one of the worst offensive lines in football is definitely NOT a ringing endorsement.

What I do know is that the Saints back-up tackles have played terribly when called upon. We've seen that the last couple pre-seasons. The starters go out and the o-line falls apart. Chase Daniel never seemed to have a pocket to throw from and the running backs never had a hole. Also, during the Ram game last year, Charles Brown was a walking turnstyle. It was one of the biggest reasons we lost that game.

So all I'm asking is, what does it hurt to check him out? No one is suggesting he's going to replace Bushrod or Strief. If, like you said, he doesn't even make the scout team, then no harm done.
