Drew Brees on the Saints offense: “We are at our best when we are as close to balanced”

The New Orleans offense is a high powered passing machine. However, the run game is vital in keeping an offense from being one dimensional. Drew Brees knows the run game is pivotal for his offense to be effective. Brees joined WWL in New Orleans with Bobby Hebert to talk about how important it is to gain balance in the offense.

“Yeah I think we are at our best when we are as close to balanced as possible. Obviously each game requires something different, but I think you kind of see that as you get into the game and see how teams are playing you, if you execute your game plan. I think for us we talked about it and want to make the emphasis of … just establishing the balance and I think it really dictates the tempo of the game and it really allows us to be our best. It’s something we always strive for. I would say this: The Bucs defense, on paper, may show they’ve given up 300 yards passing a game, but the stats are somewhat inflated because of that 500-yard performance by Eli Manning so early into the season. Realistically it’s probably more in the 200s and when you are stopping the run the way they are, it kind of forces a team to throw it. I think they had an inordinate amount of passing attempts against them, but the fact is we want to be balanced. We want to be able to execute both the run game and the pass game and that’s what would allow us to have the greatest success.”

I can see it now. The Bucs, expecting the Saints to air it out, early and often, aren't prepared for the Saints to come out running the ball, early and often.;)

Ha! Just think if that is true. Then the big question is can the SAints make progress running the ball, early and often?

I would love to see Thomas stay on the field until he needs a breather. Or Ingram stay on the field until he needs a breather. Or heck, even Ivory staying on the field until he needs a play off. All of them run, catch, and block well. Defenses will be less likely to predict the play by the package. This one back per play thing guarantees none of the backs will get a rhythm.

If only the defense was balanced.....

The defense is actually pretty "balanced"...lots of suck across the board in all phases of the defense, LOL.

The thing that I learned today and from watching the Giants/49ers game last week, is that in a sense the NUMBERS of yardage GAINED by the run, doesn't matter as much as people might think it does. The Giants ran and ran against the 49ers last week in the first half and went nowhere with it, pitiful numbers, at first, but it set up the pass when they needed it on 3rd down, to move the chains, and then in the 2nd half the run game started to bust loose for the Giants and come alive...the idea of giving up on the run, because you're behind early on the scoreboard, or because you're only getting 1, 2 yards per carry in the first quarter or first half, or the first couple of scripted drives -- to me, those are the "abandoning the run" that is doing in the Saints (in those games where everybody and their mother says they abandon the run too soon).
