Whatever happened to the Louis Freeh Investigation?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I was really looking forward to the results of the former FBI Director's investigation into the "Bounty Scandal" when it was announced that he had been retained by Benson. Saints hire former FBI director to take top-to-bottom look at organization ...

I would think that if the results had been favorable they would have been trumpeted from the highest hill. Not a word. Freeh was retained by Benson in Late May/ early June. Four plus months, and not a word? No favorable progress reports?!?

The story just died. Anybody know anything?

Re: Whatever happened to the Louis Freeh Investigation?

Well the Penn State investigation took over six months and over 400 interviews and was only investigating ONE THING, whereas this is supposedly looking into all the different events and controversies surrounding the Saints and how they happened. So it may take time.

Also there is an gap between when Freeh was HIRED and when he actually STARTED. He didn't officially finish up his work at Penn State until June/July when that report was released. While of course he could have had assistants and so forth beginning the job, and finishing the job at Penn State, my guess is that the real work didn't begin until summer, so it really hasn't been that long.

Plus, there is a possibility that it was done "for Benson's eyes only" and we will never know what it contains. It might actually end up just being a bunch of bland and boring corporate stuff like, flow charts of organizational structures and "best practices" recommendations for how to run a corporation, "employee dispute resolution" and boring stuff like that.

But my hunch is that whatever is going on with it, it is still too early and it has not happened yet. Something may come of it, but we just need to be patient. Knowing how long these things can take, and the fact that it will be very thorough, it might not even drop until December or even after the Super Bowl.

The other thing I like to mention about Freeh is that (a) he caught the Unabomber by basically setting a trap and then laying back quietly and letting him give himself enough "rope" to "hang himself" with, to expose his identity, and (b) in the Penn State investigation, Freeh actually found a "smoking gun" email about Sandusky from 2004 that had been missed by prosecutors the first time around, so the man is very thorough and patient.

I know that lately the media has said of Freeh "he caught the unabomber", but the unabomber was caught because his brother turned him in. Before that, the FBI wasn't aware Ted Kaczynski even existed.

As for the OP, I don't think anyone outside the Saints organization knows what the scope of the Freeh report actually is

Yup. I don't want to get into a huge discussion of it here, but the Unabomber was caught because they published his "manifesto" which he had been asking them to publish, which his brother then recognized the ideas in the "manifesto" as sounding like his brother. Freeh was involved in the decision to publish the "manifesto" and put it out there. But you're right -- I don't want to make it sound like Freeh single handedly tracked him down in his cabin and put the cuffs on the guy all by himself, he didn't do that, but the putting the manifesto out there was a decision to try and give the (unknown) guy what he wanted, and then let him sink himself by putting all his information and ideas out there at once.... His brother had previously suspected it might be Ted, but then recognized the writing style in the paper and was instantly like "OH ____, that's got to be him."

I don't want to get into this here either , but the publishing of the manifesto wasn't this clever trap either. The unambomber told the FBI he would stop the bombings if the Washington Post published his manifesto.

Repeat after me.

"This is all goodell's fault. There was no bounty, no one did anything wrong.... ever.... no coaches stole and abused narcotics, ESPECIALLY not vitt or payton.

Everything is fine. We're going to win out the rest of the season and sweep the playoffs and then host and win the superbowl"

Do NOT waver from the accepted party line.
