Vitt: Saints have long road ahead of them

1 Attachment(s)
METAIRIE — Saints interim coach Joe Vitt and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said they have loads of hard work ahead of them after the Saints’ most lopsided loss in four years, 34-14 to Denver on Sunday night.

A year after tying a franchise record with 13 wins in the regular season, New Orleans fell to 2-5 in Vitt’s return from his six-game, bounty-related suspension.

“Understand this, it hurts,” Vitt said. “But you have to swallow it. It’s got to go down.”

The one-dimensional Saints learned exactly how bad they were after the Broncos stifled Drew Brees and the passing game. Last in the NFL in rushing, New Orleans is the first team to give up 400 or more yards in seven consecutive games since 1950.

The Saints had nothing to fall back on when Brees struggled, going 22-of-42 for 213 yards. He connected on fewer than half of his passes until three straight completions on a meaningless late touchdown drive.

“This is a team effort,” Vitt said. “When the passing game doesn’t flourish the way we expect it to around here, we still are going to be held accountable to win games and compete.”

They did not even come close in Denver.

Yeah, its a long road and a long season if they keep playing like they did in Denver.

As poorly as they played in Denver, the Saints have not given up on contending for a playoff spot.

Blitz and run...run and blitz.

GW blitzed about 2/3 of the time while Spags has routinely blitzed 50 of the time. It's time to meet in the middle. We need to step up more pressure until we get to the QB then we worry about everything else.

The road is closed this season, won't be open again until The Coach is back driving. Our victories this season will come from spoiling the Dirty Birds fun.

Road is long and our GPS was replaced with Mayhem.

Mr. Vitt - It's called a bad season. Thankfully, there are only 9 more games to go until we can put this one to rest. Chalk it up as a disaster and move on. I say at this point just try to do one thing right on defense. Stack the line and stop the run. Sure, that will get the Saints torched against the pass, but that is happening anyway, so nothing to lose at this point. By stacking up against the run and taking chances against the pass is hopefully that will force the other team to throw 50 times. Better for opposing teams to have 3 play 75 yard drives, verses 15 play 75 yard drives. If they score quick, the Saints have a legitimate chance at winning a shootout.

I know, very flawed theory, I am just another frustrated Saints fan like the rest of us. Geez...

Out of all the horrible Saints teams and so many horrible seasons, defensively, this is going to shatter those teams along with every other defensive unit since 1950. Ummm...yeah, Spags is gone. I suspect there is something else going on behind the pewter curtain, something we don't know about. Look at the tackling and constant dives at the ankles. Who does that?

There has to be some substantial push from your front four; I'd say rotate the front four every three downs...

Eventually some of those idiots would get tired of running in and out and would find the heart to get to that quarterback so they could get off the field...

well, the more i watch the more disgusted i get at the missed and poor tackling .thats something that cant really be blamed on spags. these guys are supposed to be professinals they should know the basics of good tacklng they ar'nt a bunch of peewees that you have to show how to square up on your man and wrap him up. all spags can do is design the defense the players still have to execute it. bad tackles and miscommunications is on the players.

When players don't undestand the new scheme they aren't moving at full speed. They're hesitant... observing as they go therefore getting burnt by professionals. As a former Head Coach Steve Spagnoula should have been able to judge his people to see if they're "getting it" or not.
I 100% blame him for that.

If his guys aren't getting it then either tone it down, slowly get into the new scheme but its obvious they're not catching on quickly enough. We all heard the "it took 2 games before the Giants became a great defense" After game 4 we should have realized thats not going to happen and you need to make adjustments. We lose another game I say stick a fork in us because we're done...

You can't revert to old defensive scheme now. You keep the same scheme and figure out what current players can adapt to it and get rid of the rest.
It can't be that difficult to stay in your zone, it's just a lack of discipline with the players we have.
