NFL Report preseason rankings updated today have the Saint's #22 and would you look at some of the teams they placed ahead of us, I'm glad to see that everyone is looking past us, that way maybe we will be 8-0 before anyone notices:

New Orleans Saints

Last in the division

Here\'s another case of a bad team that should be much better. Also a team that doesn\'t know how to draft (more on that later). The big guns all return on offense, including Deuce McAllister, Aaron Brooks, Joe Horn, Donte Stallworth, Jerome Pathon, and TEs Boo Williams and Ernie Conwell. That\'s a solid lineup, but if HC Jim Haslett couldn\'t win with it for two years, why should we believe he\'ll find success now? The reason: Defense (or lack thereof). No team ended 2003 with more obvious defensive needs than New Orleans. Perhaps the only decent position was DE, where third-year man Charles Grant and the re-signed Darren Howard return. Why a first round pick was spent on yet another DE mystifies us. We could rant for hours about the mis-management of personnel in New Orleans. More can be found here. DT Brian Young was imported from St. Louis but help for the back seven on defense wasn\'t adequately addressed. Next to the Giants, New Orleans could have the worst starting LB unit in the league. And the secondary isn\'t much better. This defense will struggle all year, and that\'s not a good sign because the Saints will see virtually every high-powered offense in the league this year, including Seattle, St. Louis, Minnesota and Kansas City. With enough offense to run with any team in the league, the Saints will not reach the .500 mark because of their suspect defense. This will likely be Haslett\'s last year .

Most likely a token coordinator releasal and then they bring the real pain , another season of Hasbeen at the helm ....

What I love most about some of these prognostocators is that they mention that every team in the NFC South has questions, but they see questions for the Saints as a negative and tend to overlook the others.

Carolina: Very suspect o-line. Lost DBs. Does that seem to bother the rankings? No. Put \'em at #2.

Atlanta: New o-line system plus QB that tends to run and may get injured. Terrible D in \'03. New, first time HC. \"Top ten team\".

Tampa: Chuckie re-did the whole team. No problem. Still ahead of the Saints.

New Orleans: Powerful Offense. Might not have filled gaps on D. Obviously last place material.

What\'s even more laughable is how last year the experts complained about too much turnover. This year it\'s \"no offseason upgrades\". Sometimes I get the feeling it doesn\'t matter what the Saints do they\'ll still be looked down upon.

Gator, I wasn\'t really referring to whether we DID get better on D. I meant that the media seems to always take a negative approach to things the Saints do, i.e., \"they\'ve got questions so lets rank them low until they prove they\'re better\", rather than how they treat other teams in the NFC South. Atlanta, Carolina and Tampa all have questions - major question IMO, but two of them are ranked in the top 10. It just seems like they\'re being given benefit of doubt which the Saints never seem to get.

The media point seems pretty clear .

You got it , you had it and you aint done chit with it .

Some people just have a hard time seeing that ....

Look at their drafts and then plug the Saints in , you might sing a different tune .....

Here\'s the thing: the MEDIA didn\'t expect stability on defense this offseason, and the MEDIA didn\'t cite too much turnover as a reason for the Saints\' bad defense last season. JIM HASLETT cited those things. The MEDIA has been pretty consistent in its criteques of the defense - weak talent at key positions (DT, LB, CB). The problems have been the same for three years, and as far as I\'ve seen the MEDIA keeps pointing it out.

Do not confuse what normal uninvolved third parties say with what JIM HASLETT has been saying. HASLETT blamed the collapse in \'02 on lack of speed on D. The MEDIA said it was no talent up the middle. HASLETT rebuilt. HASLETT then blamed last year\'s poor performance on D on injuries and turnover. Many in the MEDIA blamed it on, you guessed it, not enough talent at DT, LB, and CB. HASLETT suggested that things were fine and that the D would get better with less change and greater health. We shall see, but don\'t be surprised if after this season there are problems at DT, LB, and CB.

Hasletts 2004 post season report

Haslett - The reason or defense sucked this year is :

1. The talented linebacker core is young and learning to play in the N.F.L.and they need time to gel .

2. The defensive tackles were young and we still had not worked out all of the Norman Hand cancerous ways . The new line coach needed time to gel with his new players .

3. With the cornerback situation , I still refuse to draft anyone Mel Kiper thinks I should .......

Damn, I knew he was going to say that. Is the season over already? It must have been a bad one.

I think Craft is alot better than people think and if we have several good 2nd and several good 3rd tier DB\'s instead of 1 first tier DB, 1 2nd tier DB and several 3rd tier DB\'s isn\'t that pretty much a wash. I really think the DB\'s and D-Line will be fine by the season opener.

My concern is the Linebacker\'s where Haz pretty much has his mind settled on Watson in the middle, I don\'t agree. I think we need to put him weak side and keep Ruff in the middle and have everyone else battle out the strong side. I would put Bockwoldt in there for the next preseason game, just to see how he reacts. He did very well the other night and he should be given the chance.

We need to do something in a hurry or before you know it opening day is here and the linebackers are set by a knee jerk reaction from Haz.
