In the spotlight: Right defensive end.

Depth chart

No. player | Ht. | Wt. | Exp. |

93 Darren Howard | 6-3 | 275 | 5

91 Will Smith | 6-3 | 282 | R

96 Melvin Williams | 6-2 | 278 | 1

90 Kenny Smith | 6-4 | 303 | 4

Darren Howard is the clear starter. He's healthy again after breaking his right wrist last season and has looked like his old self throughout camp. Expect a double-digit sack season. Will Smith has impressed coaches with rush ability and will see a lot of time as a sub in passing situations. Kenny Smith can play both end and tackle and provides quality depth. He's in an uphill battle to earn a roster spot. Melvin Williams also will see playing time at right end.

Position: Outside linebacker

Height/weight: 6-1, 228

Did you know: Played in NFL Europe for the Cologne Centurions in Cologne, Germany this spring. . . . Went to camp with the San Diego Chargers last season. . . . McDonald was a first-team All-American by College Football News and the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year as a senior at TCU in 2002. . . . Is currently listed as the fourth-string weakside linebacker on the depth chart behind Derrick Rodgers, Roger Knight and rookie Colby Bockwoldt.

He said it: "NFL Europe was a real growing experience. It was different. I don't speak much German so it was difficult to relate to the people. We stayed in a real nice hotel so I just hung around the pool and in the hot tub a lot -- butt-naked. That's how they did it over there."

WHO'S HOT: Third-string quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan was the best quarterback on the field against the Jets. The third-year quarterback from Cal-Davis is at his best at game time.

WHO'S NOT: Linebacker Roger Knight picked a bad time to have a knee injury. He's fighting for a roster spot at one of the most overcrowded positions on the team and can't afford to miss time. With eight linebackers expected to make the roster, Knight is on the bubble.

PLAY OF THE DAY: The highlight of team drills was a well-executed flea-flicker play in which Aaron Brooks hit Donté Stallworth for a big gain down the middle of the field. On the play, Brooks made a handoff to Aaron Stecker, who ran into the line, then pitched the ball back to the quarterback, who found Stallworth crossing downfield.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "On a scale of one to 10, Sully played around a 7. He made a nice play on the sack, and his four tackles were outstanding. Then he had three of four plays that were very ugly. I think the kid is really starting to come around. Hopefully he just keeps working the way he's working and he can get over this (conditioning) issue and move on."
