In the spotlight

Weakside linebacker: Veteran Derrick Rodgers, who had a career-high 97 tackles last season, should be the starter for the second consecutive season. Behind him, however, there is a battle brewing. With third-year pro Roger Knight unable to practice due to a knee injury, rookie Colby Bockwoldt has been getting the bulk of the second-team reps. Bockwoldt has performed well, which leaves Knight in jeopardy of not making the final roster.

No. | Player | HT. | WT. | EXP.

59 | Derrick Rodgers | 6-0 | 230 | 8

53 | Roger Knight | 6-0 | 245 | 3

76 | Colby Bockwoldt | 6-1 | 237 | R

Get to Know: Fred Booker

Position: Cornerback

Height, weight: 5-9, 185

Experience: 1 year

Age: 26

College: LSU

Hometown: Independence

Did you know? Started every game as a junior and senior at LSU from 1999 to 2000. . . . The Saints cut him before training camp but brought him back after the secondary suffered a string of injuries. . . . Grew up an LSU and Saints fan. . . . Sealed the exhibition victory over the Jets on Friday with an interception.

He said it: "I was cut once. So, when they brought me back, it made me work that much harder to prove to them that it was a mistake. To me, the interception was validation, but we'll see. I'm going to be a Saints fan whether they cut me or not."

Who's hot: WR Jerome Pathon

Among the highlights in the exhibition victory were Pathon's four catches for 46 yards and a touchdown. Coach Jim Haslett said that the sure-handed veteran wide receiver is having his best camp since joining the team.

Who's not: LB Cie Grant

Recurring knee injuries have sidelined the rookie linebacker who had hoped to compete for the starting middle linebacker job. Although Courtney Watson hasn't exactly seized control of the position, Grant appears to be a long shot at this point.

Play of the day

Aaron Brooks threw a bullet intended for tight end Boo Williams in the left flat. The ball caromed off Williams' hands and went right to cornerback Fakhir Brown, who returned it 40 yards down the sideline before Brooks bumped him out of bounds.

Quote of the day

"He's a guy who can play inside, and he has the speed to play outside. He's a heady guy, a multiple-position guy. He has a chance to play special teams. He brings a blue-collar, reliable approach to work every day."

-- Offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy on wide receiver Nathan Black, who is battling for one of the final spots on the roster.

Bockwoldt, Bockwoldt, Bockwoldt. I keep seeing this name alot, everywhere I read or hear something about the Saint\'s. Give the guy a chance to see what he can do and Booker 1 Int and 57 yards. He deserves a closer look, I don\'t care if it was a preaseason game.

It is still amazing that Stallworth has not made the INJURY list. Only good things can occur with Donte is in the lineup.

Look\'s like a good group of WR\'s. One position we want have to worry about this year and with the Beerman at KR/PR we really will have seven ready to go.
