NFC Contenders' Corner (Playoff Contenders Info) Week 12

NO MORE BYE TEAMS NFL Flex Schedule Now In Effect

It bears repeating that the most critical statistic is: CONFERENCE LOSSES! As mentioned last week, what the Saints want to have (should they not make an UNLIKELY and miraculous run to capture the NFC South title) is to be TIED with three (3) or more NFC teams for a Wildcard spot, while having the BETTER record in the Conference. Again, right now, the Saints only have three (3) losses to NFC opponents. ***** * WHO DAT!!!*****

Thanksgiving Day Games (November 22nd)
Week 12, Turkey Day Game 1: Texans (9-1 ) @ Lions (4-6 )
a.. Why it is important: Lions are an NFC rival, and are fighting for the #6 playoff spot. Winning the division is pretty much out of reach for them, unless the Bears, Packers AND Vikings have a meltdown collapse… which ain’t likely! But then again, the Lions always show up for the Thanksgiving Day game. And the Lions are a most desperate team right now.
b.. Pull for the Texans. We want any and all contenders for the Wildcard to slip further back in the standings. The Texans can help us in that regard. I do not see the Texans letting up at all. They have their eyes set on the #1 seed and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. The only weakness I see is the Texans’ secondary, which gave up six (6) TD passes to Aaron Rodgers earlier this season. And with Megatron & Titus Young at wideout, who knows???
c.. Confidence factor for a good outcome: 6.5 out of 10

Week 12, Turkey Day Game 2: Redskins (4-6) @ Cowboys (5-5)
a. Why it is important: Both teams are NFC rivals.
b. Desired outcome: Pull for the Redskins, although the Redskins own the head-to-head TIEBREAKER with the Saints. Dallas (at 5-5) is the closer competitor, so pull for them to lose.
c. Confidence factor for a good outcome: 5.5 out of 10. Redskins are still in the hunt, but are looking at pulling an “inside straight” (in poker vernacular), so look for them to be fired-up in this contest. If RG3 has a good game with no turnovers, it could put the Cowboys on life support. And the Saints would gladly pull the plug when the two meet in a few weeks.

Week 12, Turkey Day Game 3: Patriots @ Jets
N/A: AFC opponents

Sunday November 25th
Week 12, Game 4: Titans @ Jaguars
N/A: AFC opponents

Week 12, Game 5: Bills @ Colts
N/A: AFC opponents

Week 12, Game 6: Steelers @ Browns
N/A: AFC opponents

Week 12, Game 7: Raiders @ Bengals
N/A: AFC opponents

Week 12, Game 8: Broncos @ Chiefs
N/A: AFC opponents

Week 12, Game 9: Seahawks (6-4) @ Dolphins (4-6)
a. Why it is important: Seahawks are an NFC rival, and are also vying for an NFC playoff spot.
b. Desired outcome: Pull for the Dolphins for a huge upset. The only thing the Dolphins have going for them is that the Seahawks are not a very good road team, where they are 1-4 this season. A Seahawks’ loss would help the Saints in the playoff hunt.
c. Confidence factor for a good outcome: 4 out of 10

Week 12, Game 10: Falcons (9-1) @ Buccaneers (6-4)
a. Why it is important: Both teams are NFC South rivals. Falcons lead the division, and Bucs are fighting for a possible NFC playoff berth.
b. Desired outcome: This is an intriguing matchup. There is a double-edged sword in this game. If the Falcons lose, the Saints can close the gap on their LONGSHOT chance to claim the NFC South title. If the Buccaneers lose, the Saints move in a better position to capture the Wildcard #5 or (more likely) #6 spot. Not an easy call. My head says pull for the Bucs to lose. My heart says pull for the Falcons to lose. Right now, I see there being a decent chance for the Saints to run the table and end up at 11-5. That being the case, should the Falcons lose (and assuming the Saints do –in fact—run the table), the Falcons would be 9-3 after the Thursday night contest with the Saints. That would mean if, repeat, IF they SPLIT the remaining four games (@Panthers, Giants, @Lions, Bucs) while the Saints run the table, the Saints capture the NFC South. Call me crazy if you want, but the Falcons still have yet to beat a team with a winning record. I’m pulling for the Bucs in this one! WhoDat!
c. Confidence factor for a good outcome: 5.5 out of 10

Week 12, Game 11: Vikings (6-4) @ Bears (7-3)
a. Why it is important: Both teams are NFC rivals.
b. Desired outcome: Pull for the Bears to knock the Vikings down a peg. Bears were embarrassed by the 49’ers on Monday night, and will be hopping mad in this contest. AP will NOT get 100 yds, and the Bears will get 2+ turnovers.
c. Confidence factor for a good outcome: 6 out of 10

Week 12, Game 12: Ravens @ Chargers
N/A: AFC opponents

Week 12, Game 13: Rams (3-6-1)@ Cardinals (4-6)
a. Why it is important: Both teams are NFC rivals, and are still mathematically in it for a possible NFC Wildcard berth.
b. Desired outcome: Pull for the Rams to deliver a KO punch.
c. Confidence factor for a good outcome: 4.5 out of 10

Week 12, Game 14: 49’ers (7-2-1) @ Saints (5-5)
a.. Why it is important: 49’ers are an NFC rival. Since this is a conference game, it plays big in the playoff scenario. The Saints also have a score to settle from the playoffs @ San Francisco last season. The 49’ers are coming off an impressive AND emotional victory vs. the Bears; they may have a letdown vs. the Saints.
b.. Desired outcome: WhoDat, baby! This would be a tremendous confidence-builder, especially since the Saints travel to Atlanta for a Thursday night game a mere four (4) days following this one.
c.. Confidence factor for a good outcome: Saints know this will be a PHYSICAL game, and they don’t want to be manhandled by the 49’ers. I give the Saints 5.5 out of 10 in this one. It should be a nail-biter to the end!

(SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL)
Week 12, Game 15: Packers (7-3) @ Giants (6-4 )
a.. Why it is important: Both teams are NFC rivals. Packers hold the TIEBREAKER with the Saints (head-to-head), should it come down to that at the end of the regular season. Saints have an upcoming game @ the Giants in Week 14 (in the week following the Thursday night game with the Falcons).
b.. Desired outcome: Pull for the Giants, since they will probably capture the NFC East title. There’s an outside shot that the Saints could get the #5 seed, but that’s unlikely. Even so, a Packers’ loss helps the Saints a little more than a Giants’ loss.
c.. Confidence factor for a good outcome: 5.5 out of 10

Monday, November 26th (Monday Night Football)
Note: It is possible that the NFL may FLEX-in another game for this time slot (stay tuned)!
Week 12, Game 16: Panthers (2-8) @ Eagles (3-7)
a.. Why is it important: Both teams are NFC rivals.
b.. Desired outcome: Eagles have just a blip on the EKG monitor. Pull for the Panthers to have them flat-line.
c.. Confidence factor for a good outcome: 4 out of 10

Saints win + Vikings loss + Seahawks loss + Buccaneers loss = Saints control their own destiny for #6 seed

I never would have believed 6 weeks ago the Saints could be in a position come week 12 where the season could be in our own hands.
If we can pull 3 wins out of the next 4 games(49ers,Falcons,Giants,Buccs) we really would look like favourites to pull out a playoff berth and would be maybe the most feared wildcard team in a long time.
